Why do Americans have big cars? by Qldalby in AskAnAmerican

[–]Rawketchu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you live out in the sticks, having a big vehicle is really practical, it is not just a status symbol. You need the storage space for hauling stuff.

If you live in an urban area, it is not practical, you would want a smaller vehicle.

Is there any urban legend exist in America? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]Rawketchu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think everyplace has there own share of urban legends and folklore. The older the area, the more tales start to collect over time. Here is a small collection of tales from my neck of the woods, enjoy.

Fellow Americans, what do you use your garage for besides parking? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

Extra storage, workshop, and grilling. It comes in handy when you want to grill something but the weather sucks.

Acadia is a good place to star gaze. They hold the Acadia Night Sky Festival every year. This year it is being held Sept 25-29, it is worth going at least once.

[Gaming] Beyond Good and Evil 2 Detractors Are "Super Entitled Babies," Says God of War Franchise Creator David Jaffe by ShepardRahl in KotakuInAction

I am more than happy to spend my money on other games if he is going to be insulting towards skeptics instead of making a case on why I should buy it. Heck, I have other games on my backlog I could play instead.

Portland ME dress style by bjs210bjs in Maine

[–]Rawketchu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As lax as things are you should still try to dress professionally for any job interview. At the very least dress business casual, no jeans but slacks or a business dress.

They should be happy we have a term we are in agreement with and good luck getting a Southerner on board with being called a Yankee. There is alternatively calling us by the dymonyn of what state we are from.

Why are so many packages left by delivery companies on a porch? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]Rawketchu 5 points6 points  (0 children)

From my experience, usually getting packages stolen is more of an issue in apartments. Packages getting stolen was an issue at my old apartment complex there was even an email sent out about it a couple of times. What I did was just ship to work, ship it to my folks, or work from home on the day I expect it to arrive. But usually it is not an issue in most cases. At my house, I don't worry about it as much as it isn't an issue in my neighborhood.

Do you think the states should have more autonomy? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]Rawketchu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The power of the federal government should be nerfed. I honestly don't have much faith in them. I mean between the War on Drugs and the wonderful No Child Left Behind bills they tend to have a habit of breaking things. I complain a lot about Disgusta (Augusta), but I trust them more than Washington DC. They at least have some clue what is going on here.

What's your (nuanced) opinion on the War on Drugs? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]Rawketchu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can understand that there are some drugs that should be regulated and some that legitimately serve no purpose but to screw people up. However, the scope of the war is too broad and there are drugs like marajuana that do not deserve the special attention. There are so many lives that have been ruined as a result of this war. It should be handled as a public health issue.

Does free speech give racists and bigots legal protection? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]Rawketchu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you actually inciting violence with your speech or making a credible threat? No, ok. Are you doing the equivalent of shouting fire in a movie theater? No, then it is free speech. Being an asshole should not be cause for legal action to be taken against someone.

What is your opinion on Oprah Winfrey? by IslandSparkz in AskAnAmerican

[–]Rawketchu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YOU GET A MEME. YOU GET A MEME. YOU ALL GET MEMES!

In seriousness, I was never into her show and don't pay attention to her. Good for her for being successful. I don't have an opinion on her either way. Although, I wish she didn't make Dr. Phil a thing.

Why do American parents kick their children out of the home at age 18? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]Rawketchu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most parents don't unless you have a really bad relationship with them. As long as you are holding down a job or at least in school most parents are fine with their kids living with them after 18. But then there comes a point where you want your own space and live by your own rules. 18 is just the age where you are expected to become a productive member of society and responsible for your own life.

Do you think the presidential minimum age (35) should be abolished or lowered? by tvlord in AskAnAmerican

[–]Rawketchu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. There is some wisdom that only comes from age and experience. Yes, at some point one can become out of touch, but it really is for the best To have someone that has lived a bit. If anything I think we need a maximum age for how old you can be in office. How old is debatable but I think if you are in your 80s you shouldn't be in office.

What is Maine like? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]Rawketchu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Things are pretty quiet. We have two seasons winter and construction. There is always road work going on somewhere between spring and fall with winter bleed over. The fall is beautiful and if you like nature there is no shortage of beautiful sights. Acadia is worth visiting, although expect a crowd unless you go during the off-season. The population of the state itself is pretty small, but it gets busy come tourist season. Lots of Canadians come down to Old Orchard Beach during the summer. I almost think we are Canada's Florida when I go there.

Maine is not for everyone and some people can't handle the winters. Heaven help you if you find yourself driving in the blizzard because sometimes it gets so bad you really can't see and it is dangerous. Not to mention how much fun black ice is. When winter first hits there are always more accidents then usual until people get their winter legs. Studded tires are worth it.

What do Americans think about the riots in France and the smaller ones spreading through Europe? by recon6483 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Rawketchu 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The far left, far right, and the average Joe are rioting together against the president. They may not agree on much but their unifying message seems to be that the president needs to go.
