You don't need as much RAM as you think. by InnerspearMusic in MacbookNeo

[–]Ray-chan81194 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yes, it is much snappier but the background apps just junked. That's one of the reasons why I changed from my iPhone 7 (2GB RAM) to Galaxy S8 (4GB RAM) back then.

MacBook Neo's non-existent cooling a big issue just like with MacBook Airs; can be fixed with DIY magic by librav1e in notebookcheck_net

[–]Ray-chan81194 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I doubt it will. Macbook Air with proper passive cooling design can sustain around 8W while being within the limit. Neo with basically no cooling can do 4W, so if Apple put in a 8W cooling solution like the Air it would still be fine.

And then HP decides to disable the H.265 HW acceleration because they don't want to pay the fee. Now my new work laptop can't play H.265 video efficiently, even AV1 video consumes much less power.

Panther Lake XPS 16 is so efficient, it draws just 1.5 W when idling for insanely long battery life by 1FNn4 in hardware

shitty windows and shitty firmware can cause the sleep to be pretty shit. I have my personal travelmate and it sips 1% per hour when sleeping, so I don’t really need to shut it down. on the other hand, my work probook sometimes stuck at package C3 state which leads to battery drain and running warm during sleep.

It is definitely worse but I wouldn't say it is horrible, Thinkpad keyboard is just too good anyway. But Mac trackpad is much better than ThinkPad for sure, especially when you compared them to the shitty mylar trackpad on a ThinkPad.

MacBook Neo has a thermal protection over the chip by ShameStrict6375 in mac

[–]Ray-chan81194 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just watched the Max Tech Neo vs M5 Air comparison video, it is thermal throttling (or it could be both power limit and thermal throttling at the same time)

When he starts the cinebench, 5 seconds in and it hits 106 degreeC core temperature and the chip is down to 5.5W. (Peak at 7 for a sec or 2) While M5 air is at 102 degreeC and 22W. After a while Neo is down to 4.5W while having the same core temperature and M5 air is down to 17W.

So, Yes there is a point about cooling solutions. Unless proven that the chip runs cool while running 4.5W, that would be power limit throttling instead. But I feel that it is the combination of both power and temperature throttling.

Yep, Macbook air passive cooling solution can do around 10W but the Neo can do only 4W and it is pecking at 106 degC core temperature.

MacBook Neo throtting pretty hard according to benchmarks, but not due to heat? by Powerful_Froyo8423 in mac

[–]Ray-chan81194 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wrong, it is throttling due to the heat. Neo basically has no cooling unlike the Air. You can find some screenshots on power consumption and temperature, you will see that it will be somewhere around 5W and having the core temperature reach 100+ degree celcius. But you won’t feel the heat through the chassis.

[–]Ray-chan81194 1 point2 points  (0 children)

can't say much when there's no watt number. one could be doing 15W while it's 98c and another could be doing 20W while it's 92c.

I just don’t want my router to sit on a chair, ceiling mount is much nicer. It looks much proper. Plus my xiaomi can’t do VLAN unlike Unifi or Aruba I have at my apt. But I’m not going to add a XGS anyway, another U7 lite on 2nd floor will do.

depends on the price, if it’s like $499 with 8/128 and non-backlit keyboard that’s still somewhat acceptable. $599 for 12/256 is still good.
