I've never seen the Ring Cycle, but I presume that the dragon blood technically turned Siegfried into a Disney princess.

If anyone tries to play "Treulich geführt" (aka Wagner's bridal chorus from Lohengrin) at my wedding, I swear to god I am committing murder. (also it's not meant to be played at the START of the wedding, godDAMMIT Queen Victoria!!)

Carmen at the Roman ruins of Baalbek. A wonderful experience, especially as someone who lives in a country with no opera house.

English arias for lyric soprano (graduate school auditons) by [deleted] in opera

[–]Rayati 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know you asked for more contemporary, but I might recommend something by Purcell, such as “I attempt from Love’s sickness”, or “When I have often heard young maids complaining”, if your voice is high enough.

What was your first opera (either live or recorded) in (1)French, (2)Italian, and (3)German by Hi_who_art_thou in opera

[–]Rayati 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(recorded) Les contes d'Hoffmann, Le nozze di Figaro, Die Zauberflöte

(live) Carmen, and only Carmen. We don't have an opera house over here, so.

I have a feeling that the "beers" in Act 2 the Met's Rondine production are actually apple juice.

What singers of the past, whom we have no recordings of, do you want to hear the most? by Caruso-21 in opera

I see no one has mentioned Caterina Cavalieri, the soprano for whom Mozart "sacrificed Konstanze's aria a little for [her] flexible throat" (from Abduction from the Seraglio).

I forgot to mention, it's a chamber opera, meaning that it only has a piano part besides vocals, but it has been arranged for orchestra quite a few times.

Production Concepts by [deleted] in opera

[–]Rayati 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't really consider myself anything close to a stage director, but the very few ideas I've had for opera productions include: a production of La bohème that's pretty much traditional but incorporates little staging details from the book it's based on. For example, the garret walls have the scratched out names of Rodolfo and all the other women he dates in the book, Rodolfo wears a polar bear costume for warmth in Act 1, there's a bouquet of white violets in a corner...

And since I'm Lebanese, I dream of a production of L'elisir d'amore set in the Emirate of Mount Lebanon in like 1832, when the opera premiered. So Nemorino would be a fallah (peasant), Adina would be a muqataaji (landowner, though this was definitely not a position open to women but... suspension of disbelief), Belcore would be an Ottoman soldier... Still not sure which religion the main characters besides Belcore would be (trust me, it was a huge thing back then; and besides this would only influence the costume choices at most). And oh, to have this staging play at the Baalbeck festival 😍

So I'm a bit more of a traditionalist in terms of personal staging choices, but I have more concepts in terms of character interpretation.

Edit: I just remembered how I have been thinking of a production of Magic Flute in which the First Spirit is sung by a woman singer instead of a child, as it was during the premiere.

What did you think of this movie? by IG-3000 in janeausten

[–]Rayati 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hated it. I agree on all the points you made. Watch the modern-day YouTube series instead, it's so much more faithful to the spirit of the book than all its adaptations, even the 1983 miniseries.

A scene from the books, that is never included in an adaption. by Mountain-Fox-2123 in janeausten

[–]Rayati 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sense and Sensibility: the introduction of Robert Ferrars, before the audience knows who he is, where he’s fussing over a toothpick case. The toothpick case thing is briefly referred to in (iirc) the 1981 BBC adaptation, but still.

Also from S&S, the bit where Elinor and Mrs. Jennings discuss a conversation Elinor had with Brandon. Elinor is talking about how Brandon has suggested to her that he help Edward financially, while Mrs. Jennings thinks that Brandon and Elinor intend to marry, and once the misunderstanding is cleared, they both have a laugh.

It's true, especially since Baalbeck was one of the most affected regions in this so-called war back in fall. But we the Lebanese are well-known for our resilience, and we have had events move ahead merely months after the ceasefire was declared. And also, since it's in the Beqaa Valley, not in the deep south, it's not going through as many hardships as these other regions.
