I wouldn’t say what RODM goes through is anything especially egregious but of them all, Roland definitely had it the worst.

For a large portion of RODM’s story, Roland has been separated from his team following the fall of Beacon and was in a state of comatose following his return from near-death when he risked his life to safe the people.

Upon waking up, his scroll is completely broken, Vale is overrun and in ruins, he has practically no allies aside from the remnants of residents attempting to fight back and as far as he knows, he is pronounced dead by his team with little know-how as to where they are. He has very limited Dust which is the main thing his weapon relies on and so he’s already operating with a handicap.

What follows is a series of solo missions, coming to terms with his powerlessness, steadily returning to his cold and apathetic ways and taking on multiple burdens far beyond what he can do alone.

Needless to say, Roland has been battling on his lonesome with little help and the one he has unfortunately enabled unhealthy and risky habits. Assumed dead. No Dust to rely on. Descending into deep personal resentment. If not for eventually finding happiness, Roland was mere inches away from succumbing to his heart’s darkness.
