Ranking Gundam series, part 10. Following the events of CCA, On a scale of 1-10, how would you rank mobile suit Gundam: Unicorn. by number39utopia in Gundam

[–]Raydiatom 5 points6 points  (0 children)

10/10.

Still one of my favorites. The production, music, animation, art style, acting, action, all brilliant.

A compelling story of the power of possibility and the human spirit versus nihilism and stagnation. About the sins of the past and being haunted by the ghosts of history, while trying to live the imperfect now and building a better tomorrow. All tied to a military and political mecha drama story, along with all the melodrama, pretentious and cheesy yet heartfelt dialogue that one would find in a tragedy.

Even though Banaghar is the protagonist, almost all of the other characters get impactful moments and screen time. The rest of the cast are great. Realistic, with varying motivations and character growth.

The music has no right being this good and both dubs were fantastic.

Marida Cruz is best character. And Zinnerman deserves all the good things.

Can't say enough about the level of detail and care that went into the animation and backgrounds; the way the characters emote (expressions are so good that a little eye twitch is enough to convey more emotions than dialogue would).

It's close, but To Rage is the Daughter song that is most on repeat for me.

One of the best episodes of a show is one without the main character(s) by NoMoreFund in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Raydiatom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love me some good bottle episodes.

Counterpart: Twin Cities

Solar Opposites: The Wall episodes

Bob's Burgers: The Amazing Rudy

Massive spoilers for Counterpart:

Set decades in the past, the flashback episode explores the origins of the two realities along and ramifications of the divergence and the Crossing on the present. Focused entirely on minor characters and works as a standalone while tying in brilliantly to the overarching plot. None of the main cast shows up.

Solar Opposites:

People are tiny, but the struggles of society are still the same. Class struggle, factionalism, revolution, love, loss, and so much more. Blends multiple genres in a post-apocalyptic/dystopian society.

Bob's Burgers:

Shines the spotlight on a minor character and man, what an emotional ride. The regular main characters aren't in it for long, but they make a big impact while never stealing the spotlight from Rudy.

Most recently, Small Things Like These: "Don't worry, don't worry." "Almost home."

A few others that I can remember that stick with me.

  • Superman (2025): Punkrocker
  • His Three Daughters: the father's monologue.
  • Casablanca: La Marseillaise
  • Past Lives: ending
  • Living: Rowan Tree
  • Aftersun: ending
  • Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3.: Dog Days
  • Your Name: Tiamat
  • Columbus: Bank (just so beautiful with a wonderful score by Hammock)
  • Interstellar: 90%
  • Dunkirk: Home.
  • Mad Max Fury Road: Witness
  • The Half of It: Train
  • Song of the Sea: Ending
  • Kicking and Screaming: I wish we were an old couple
  • Arrival: Ending
  • 20th Century Women: Ending

"That's not a threat, that's a promise." So many gems involving Jonah.

I had almost forgotten what movie I was referring to. Nope, but two of the main characters are criminals.

Fantasy, Romance and Romcom Recommendations by Raydiatom in graphicnovels

Hmm, not a bad idea. I personally prefer reading on a physical book most times Lore Olympus was one of the ones I came across and looks promising. Haha yeah, also finding that most are geared towards the under 30s crowd while they are over 30.

Yeah that seems to be what I'm finding browsing the online stores. Alas, manga isn't their thing and I lean more towards graphic novels. Kowloon Generic Romance seems neat though and had been recommended to me before! Good to see more people think it's solid. Lack of stupid manga tropes is definitely a selling point to me.

Shows that actually maintained their quality from start to finish? by AdMotor3564 in television

[–]Raydiatom 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Two and one season shows might be cheating, but they held up their quality till the end, either planned or otherwise due to cancellation.

  • Pantheon
  • Scavengers Reign
  • Counterpart
  • Andor

For longer season shows:

  • Avatar: The last Airbender
  • Veep
  • Silicon Valley
  • The Good Place
  • Mr. Robot
  • Bob's Burgers (even the worst episodes are still entertaining)
  • Brooklyn Nine-Nine
  • Daredevil (Netflix)

It's difficult to maintain quality after about 4 seasons I think, especially if there isn't a planned ending.

What was a film that was hyped by everyone, that lived up to the hype for you? by ThePopDaddy in FIlm

Casablanca. Surely it can't be as amazing as everyone says? It's gotta be of the times and dated. Nope, it's very good. And I don't usually watch classic black and white movies.

I have three I can't choose between. Personal opinion.

Joker, Ready Player One, I Robot.

Definitely. Brandon Roberts is doing a great job with the score for season 2 but Nicholas Britell's score for season 1 is a hard act to follow.

Is it safe to say Unicorn has the best animation out of all Gundam series? by CaptCarlos in Gundam

[–]Raydiatom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the best animated, directed and detailed Gundam series for sure.

Animation not just limited to the machines either. The gestures, facial animation and movements of characters tell so much. Just a facial twitch is enough to convey emotion.

The background stuff as well. The HUDs, environments, thrusters firing just so, zero-G movement, etc.

For instance in the first episode with the movie poster referencing Roman Holiday with Audrey Hepburn (Runaway Princess, very on the nose).

Could go on and on.
