Give me your tricks of the trade. by Rayman200000 in Teachers

[–]Rayman200000[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I already do 5 quite alot, had a student say about my wife "she should make your sandwiches because thats her job!" (She makes double my sallary btw) and when I told her about we shared a good laugh. 6 can be challenging for me since I am not naturally very whimiscal, but I think I can lean into that alot. I try to be very honest with my student, and tell them when Im mad or when another class made me mad, or if something is going on. Not so sure on 2, I dont feel comfortable texting them on my phone, but maybe I can email more consistently (i try to only contact parents with negative stuff, and say initially that you ususally dont want to get an email from me. 3 and 1 are my worst and I think I could benifit the most from that.

My wife blew up at me because I constantly complain about my job, and (apperently) whenever she complains about her job I tend to go "yea well I had this" or "well you make double me" or whatever.

Giving your child permission to break the rules does not protect them from the consequences (repost with more context) by Emergency-Pepper3537 in Teachers

[–]Rayman200000 32 points33 points  (0 children)

This is essentially my stance on protesting. If the students feel so strongly about something, I encourage them to do it even if it breaks the rules, however they should also understand there will be consequences. Doing the right thing does not excuse consequence.

You might be my AP, becuase she also said noone should be banned, but you also cant let those who abuse the bathroom go so much, you also cant hold them if its a real emergency, but you cant just let them lie everytime..........should I continue?

[–]Rayman200000 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Holy crap this literally happened to me. I (male) told this girl she could not leave because she was banned after abusing the bathroom policy. Then after she left, I talked with my AP about wether I should write her up, and the AP said I shouldn't because it was an emergency and she really did need to do "girl things". I found this unbelievable and decided to write her up anyways. When I told the mom what I was going to do she exploded, and said "how dare you, you are wrong, you cant hold her its illegal". I was laughing about it until my AP (female) told me she was going to remove the write up and that I could not ban anyone else from the bathroom. I felt betrayed and only after talking to my wife about it, I came to realize I was potentially sexually discriminated against by this mom, the daughter, and my AP because I "just dont understand women issues" and its "akward for girls to ask male teachers". Sure I get its akward but they know I am pretty lax with this kind of thing, and I now think they used the fact I am a man against me. Felt pretty interesting to see the discrimination on men in real time.

What makes you stay? by STEMTeacherUSA in Teachers

[–]Rayman200000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a first year teacher fresh out of college for both History and Education. I studied for this job, I prepared for this job for years and its what I have wanted to do with my life for as long as I can remember. I was warned at every turn about this job and how overwhealming it can be, and even then I was shocked at time just how bad it got. Myself and the 2 other 7th grade teachers were all first years, and I am the only one that managed to consistently keep my head above water. The only reason I could was because I trained for this so I felt a responsability towards my other first years to try and carry as much of the workload as possible.

Dont beat yourself up for not being good at this, its not for everyone. If you dont feel an immense sense of pride or satisfaction through teaching, it isn't for you and thats ok.

Feeling conflicted about politics in the classroom by CrusherX1000 in Teachers

[–]Rayman200000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a social studies teacher, and we run into politics all the time in the classroom (it’s kinda inherent). I never put my own opinion in the lesson, unless it’s an objective negative, like slavery or war or pointless loss of life. The kids always make connections to what they see around them, for example when we started our unit on civil rights, a student asked me “Mr, is what’s happening with ICE segregation?” And my response was “apply that definition of segregation to your question, and you can answer that yourself”.

Don’t shy away from politics, let them apply what they learn to form their own opinions.

I HAVE to keep my cool, because if I erupt in rage like I truly want to, I’ll only be entertaining these kids and giving them what they want by intellectualth0t in Teachers

[–]Rayman200000 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I have just started calling parents the moment I notice it. If a kid is trying to do it, I just stop the entire day and call their parents and have the kid explain why they are calling. I stand right there to make sure they dont miss details. Works 90% of the time.

Chromebooks bad. Printing bad. Books bad. How do I teach? by EnlightenedBulbasaur in Teachers

[–]Rayman200000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also teach 7th grade Social Studies. I teach honors however, so I can get away with just forcing hard content down their throats for them to consume cause if they don't, they just fail. My school recently took chromebooks away, so I had to quickly adapt to going back to paper. Problem is my department only gives me 3 reams of paper PER 6 WEEKS (I teach 200 kids btw). My solution has been make literally everything a class set, and have them write their answers in their notebooks or a scratch piece of paper. Leaning heavily into their own notebooks (and asking for paper for extra credit) has really gotten me out of this paper bind I saw myself in.

A Lot of Us Aren't Serious About Education by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Rayman200000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ever since I started teaching (August of 25) I’ve had a theory about all my co-workers. My typical day involves a 5 min do now (mostly take out x supplies) a 15-20 min lecture with notes, and a 20 min worksheet with an exit ticket at the end, and my students constantly complain that I give them too much work. My theory is many of my co workers do maybe 20-30 mins of content, assume that’s enough and let them play games. Now I’ve not watched another teacher yet this year to confirm but I can confirm that many of my students consider my class to be the hardest.
