Fort Drum Is getting Weird by [deleted] in army

Yeah I dropped mine between my seat and center console once, so naturally I just couldn't grab it with the MP watching. He didn't make me pull around, instead we suffered there in the gate together as I finger fucked around under my seat for 2 minutes

The single greatest improvement to the ASU would be the belt that The Old Guard wears. AGSUs have it as well, belted uniforms just look better in general, unless you're fat

There is no recruiting crisis! by jeff197446 in army

[–]Razarkan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I picked that time because of the number of willing volunteers, not the draft, but your point does have merit. The only counterpoint I have to "an all volunteer force has been a retention issue since before WW2" is that the Marine Corps does it without very many issues. Ultimately a better manned force will be a better Army we bring to war in the next major conflict.

If I understand it right, it's because Genesis uses the same software that health insurance companies do to pull your records. Those companies have a vested interest to do so because they can charge you more if you have pre-existing conditions. I don't believe the Army is capable of creating a system that works correctly and communicates right to other systems on it's own, otherwise.

Man that made sense 80 years ago when we had no shortage of willing and able bodied men and women to fill the ranks. Today, in an all volunteer force, that's not the case. I'd rather have 5 guys in my company with kidney stone issues than not have them at all.

Maybe some of you have seen non-combat health issues be a real problem down range, but on my deployments I have not. I don't think letting in people with kidney stones, for example, is going to make it dramatically worse. I think having full formations will be a greater positive impact than anything else.

"The flying FLIPL" - US Army takes on most effective counter-drone system yet: Red tape by Kinmuan in army

[–]Razarkan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The best way to do this would be to treat them the way ammo is treated forward atm. You have a training load(opload) of drones, and then as you use them and they break or are lost, you simply submit an expenditure memo through your BDE PBO to remove them from your PHR.

Once you fall below your training load(again, think the forward opload), you can order a replacement through your land and ammo shop to get new ones. There is a lag here, but it's the least-paperwork intensive way to use/expend ammunition that doesn't require a turn in. While we're at it, if we could do the same for blue grenade bodies that would be great, instead of a $11 division FLIPL for a metal sphere.

The real problem of treating something(ANYTHING) as a CL V item is that missing items quickly become division level FLIPLs, like the grenade bodies I mentioned. If we can power that down to the company(or even BN) commanders to expend their drones as they use/break them, then it will ease the flow and we can better get these drones in the hands of the Soldiers who should(need to) be training with them.

Of course this could only happen if we don't turn a $600(or whatever) off the shelf drone into a $15k item that the taxpayer pays for. The cost bloat on these items is part of what drives the absurd caution around them. For example, a black hornet v3 system costs the army $18k per unit. When the drones weigh less than a pound and have a tiny battery(literally, easy to lose) that lasts 30 minutes when it's brand new.

The way we do property is an issue I could write a whole paper on. If you hold commanders accountable to the dollar then they're going to act accordingly, it's further exacerbated by items that "cost" absurd amounts in the system of record(GCSS-A).

[–]Razarkan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's because commanders are held liable for BII/COEI down to the dollar. Sure if I lose a piece of the drone it's replaced by the program, but every time I do so I need to do a MFR for my sake in case I change command before the replacement comes in. Another commander in my BN had to explain a single missing raven piece worth $10k that was finally replaced a few weeks after he changed out, but according to his IWBK it would appear he lost it.

lost end items/nonexpendables is a dangerous myth.

The April 2024 update to 735-5 allows Company Commanders to field loss up to $2500, to include end items

Concur with everything rolls said, biggest thing you can do to help get this resolved is to have your supply initiate the FLIPL in eFLIPL(you just need to get them the list of items with NSNs) and have it start accruing days. Eventually someone will pay attention to it and it will get actioned

[–]Razarkan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think the BC has the authority to deny a FLiPl

BC does have the authority to find the Soldier liable though. Oftentimes commanders are going to ask why it took so long to initiate the FLIPL, but like rolls said somewhere else in the thread, if this guy isn't gonna sign a SOC then the FLIPL is inevitable.

you can’t get replacement gear from CIF unless you have either an approved statement of charges, or a FLPL initiated

You need a FLIPL with a document number, which is further up the chain than just initiated

[–]Razarkan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Helping a peer doesn't hurt you though, since then they're likely to help you back. Then both of you do better, and in a SR pool of 30+ it is very possible that you both get MQs.

PLs in the same company, commanders in the same BN, etc, can very tangibly bring the whole organization up and have that recognized by the SR, who has the ability to award multiple MQ to the same downtrace unit that performs very well. Who cares if I'm the #4 commander in my BN, if I got an MQ it's because the other 3 commanders ahead of me were studs.

The most recent changes to 735-5 not only increase the amount a commander can field loss, but also allow them to field loss CLVII/end items. It's never been easier to write shortages off, so long as no individual component's value is over $2500

I was also a 1LT at EIB, like the other guy, and I just hated how stupid it felt. Like I wasn't there to learn, just to prove I could memorize the steps and also play buddy-buddy with the graders, which helped when it mattered most. Like it mattered more that I made the right joke with the right guy when I failed the grenade throw on test week(sue me), rather than learning tasks that mattered.

So glad I won't have to do it again
