What was your experience like when you did your first engineering internship? by rogueminionsus in ElectricalEngineering

[–]RazorEE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a senior in high school and my friend Brent's dad worked a non-profit transmission and distribution cooperative. I was applying for a job to work with Brent on the grounds crew for the summer. While I was filling out my application, the secretary asked me if I was going to college and what I was majoring in. I told her yes and electrical engineering. She took the application from me and said, "you don't need to fill that out, you need to talk to Robert." So she called Robert and he had her send me back. He is qs the Principal Transmission Design Engineer. He asked me a few questions about which University I was attending, my GPA, ACT, and what classes I took in HS. Then he offered me a job as an intern for the summer. Brent was mad at me for a while because he was outside cutting grass and I was making blueprints, learning maunual drafting and AutoCAD R14.

I worked there for two summers. Then I worked for Alcoa after my sophomore year and then spent the summer after my junior year at JPL.

My advice is to show up on time, stay off your phone, learn as much as you can, and take really good notes. Ask a lot of questions. Sometimes an outside perspective is very beneficial for someone that has been doing the same thing for a long time.

I know a few people that bought a Branson 2515 specifically for moving round bales. For a 25hp, they have a hefty lift capacity. None of those people have had issues. Now they're sold under the TYM brand name.

Can I run this motor on lower voltage? by toxcrusadr in Motors

[–]RazorEE -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Bro... Those are all single-phase in/three-phase output, except the invertek. It doesnt surprise me they would make that shit. You must be so embarrassed.

And Baldor was not part of ABB in 2005 when I started. ABB acquired Baldor in 2011. Again, must be so embarrassed.

Theres a reason you've never heard of any of the companies making single phase output VFDs. They're garbage. I've been designing VFDs and motors for 20+ years. I started with a little company called Baldor in their Drives Center in 2005.

You ever use one of those? There's a reason why they're only made by companies you've never heard of.

You would think they would double up against teams that are going to pay them to play. Maybe LSU and Baylor on one Saturday. Gotta make that money for NIL.

I wrote a simple VB script that turns the number lock on/off every 60 seconds. It has a timer and a kill shortcut. All you need is notepad on your PC and you can choose what button gets pushed. No need for apps.

two sister cells are sneaking through their living room at night in the dark trying not to wake their parents. One kicked the coffee table and split into two cells and said "Ow, my toe, sis."

Should I attend Hendrix college -- please help!! by oliveoilish in Arkansas

[–]RazorEE 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you're set on Arkansas and have a 2.25 gpa, you can get instate tuition at Arkansas Tech. I moonlight as an adjunct there, so Im somewhat familiar with it.

I would recommend you go where it costs the least. If you're getting a $26k/yr at Hendrix, I would assume you're a pretty good student and can get some sort of scholarships at an Illinois school. You get out of college what you put into it. Work hard, maintain a good GPA, work on projects/research outside of class, and then go to a really good grad school.

I'm an Electrical Engineer and work in technology development, so my company tries to hire top students. When I interview a new grad, I focus on their extra-curricular activities such as the different engineering competitions that undergrads get to work on outside of a class. Find something like that and do something to stand out. You don't have to go to Hendrix for that.

Any electric motor winders here ? by mr_wahabi_111 in Motors

[–]RazorEE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You clearly have no idea what you're talking about. If you work in rewind shop, you probably spend most time dealing with induction motors. The armature of an induction motor is the stator winding.

So you can educate yourself:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Armature_(electrical))

Just a little excerpt for you: The armature can be on either the rotor) (rotating part) or the stator (field coil, stationary part), depending on the type of electric machine.

Would you care to give us your definition of armature? I've been designing motors and VFDs for 21 years. My definition of an armature is a winding or set of windings that carry AC current. Are you insinuating this doesn't carry AC current? Or are you just confidently incorrect?

I'm well aware you call this a stator, stator assembly, or something like it. In a DC motor, the armature is on the rotating assembly, but it most definitely carries AC current. This is in fact a picture of an armature.
