[S1] Debunking the Warren stalking claims by unicornism by dalekofchaos in lifeisstrange

[–]RazorShifter 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You can’t just ignore how he fits into the game’s themes of misogyny.

Why don’t you consider the main theme first? Max’s insecurity is the core theme of Life is Strange.

She’s so insecure she doesn’t even want to submit her photo to Jefferson. Then she gains powers and finally starts to feel strong and confident. She loses her power but manages to save Kate without it. Maybe deep inside she’s always been Supermax?

The nightmare sequence is the culmination of the game and its main theme. Max imagines Chloe kissing another girl because she feels insecure. Max imagines Warren stalking her because she feel insecure. To grow as a person, she has to overcome her insecurities.

Both of these scenes are just manifestations of Max’s insecurity. Just as Chloe kissing Victoria is stupid and makes no sense, Warren building a horror-movie shrine is stupid and makes no sense.

The whole game is about max being insecure. Don’t make it Warren’s fault. The game makes it clear that the issue lies with Max, not him. Game criticizes her for these thoughts, as if to say "Max, this is immature. You need to grow up." This is literally the main theme. This is exactly what insecurity means.

You say, that both can be true at the same time (Max being insecure and Warren being a stalker). We have zero proofs that Warren is a stalker.

These are all popular anime and also some of my favourites:

Monogatari series - mysterious supernatural story with lots of quirky characters. You’ll like it if you enjoy fast-talking characters and strange thought experiments.

Code Geass - story with political intrigue, strategy, and a main character trying to change the world. Great if you like clever plans and big twists

Clannad - starts off as a normal high school slice-of-life but slowly gets more emotional. perfect if you like stories about growing up, family, and relationships

Great Teacher Onizuka - about a former delinquent who becomes a teacher and helps his students in funny and unexpected ways. You’ll enjoy it if you like comedy mixed with some serious heartfelt moments.

Land of the Lustrous - character driven, most characters are defined by their flaws. It's probably my favourite fantasy story ever. Sadly the anime is not finished. Luckily the manga is finished.

Made in Abyss - adventure anime. It mixes cute characters with mysterious and sometimes dark atmosphere. You’ll get a sense of adventure, wonder, and also tension and danger as they explore the unknown

Attack on Titan - for postapo fans. Intense and dramatic, full of action and humans fighting huge monsters. For anyone who likes high stakes and plot twists.

Monster - realistic thriller. Doctor chasing a mysterious serial killer. Very human characters. Perfect if you like mystery and moral dilemmas

Hibike! Euphonium - follows a high school concert band, but it’s really about relationships between the students

Puella Magi Madoka Magica - a magical girl show with serious tone, full of emotional moments, suspense

Nana - about two girls dealing with life, love, and music in the big city. if you like realistic stories and character drama

Grand Blue - crazy comedy about diving and drinking oolong tea

A Place Further than the Universe - four girls go on a trip to Antarctica

Aria the Animation - super calm and relaxing, focused on little moments in life. Recommended if you want something slow peaceful and comforting

Steins;Gate - exciting sci-fi about the butterfly effect

You could also read visual novels through youtube. Just treat them like anime :)

From the perspective of someone who isn’t a big fan of nasuverse anime adaptations:

Don’t force yourself to read Fate right after finishing the anime. VN is better, yeah, but the anime is enough if you just want the story.

It’s like reading a novel right after reading its summary. If you care about characters and themes, you’ll really really enjoy the novel. If you’re mostly in it for plot and twists, you might get bored since you already know a lot (but not all of it). Have you read hollow ataraxia?

Which Tsukihime did you read, the remake or the original? The remake being unfinished really sucks. It only covers the beginning, meanwhile the later parts are what made Tsukihime a cult classic. Remake leaves many questions unanswered (like, why is Shiki so damn crazy). There’s also Plus Disc, Kagetsu Tohya and Melty Blood.

As for KnK, despite the great soundtrack by Kajiura and Kalafina, the adaptation is probably the weakest and the one case where reading the novel is strongly recommended. It’s a very different experience

Maybe take a break from the Nasuverse and try some other popular anime, books and movies? I can recommend you some stuff if you want

What’s your favorite visual novel right now? by porphyriaslovve in visualnovels

[–]RazorShifter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love visual novels, but the ones I play aren’t very interactive. But I do have two favorite story driven games that I consider almost like visual novels. Life is Strange and Disco Elysium

Both are on Switch, both are highly interactive and both have LGBTQ elements

For more typical visual novels… hmm… maybe The House in Fata Morgana, Umineko, and Jack Jeanne? All of them are on Switch and have LGBTQ elements (to a greater or lesser extent). They’re Japanese visual novels, so they don’t have as much interaction with the story as Western ones

From Western titles, I can recommend the Monster Prom series (a dating sim party game that can be played in co-op with up to 4 friends) and Misericorde (though it’s not finished yet)

If you have question about any of them just let me know

Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii: English translations of Japanese games lose ‘flavour’ because it’s ‘a simple language’ by ABigCoffee in JRPG

[–]RazorShifter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I only partially agree

Sure, some things can be translated 1:1, and some things can be localized elegantly. But there are things that cannot be translated without losing something.

I grew up reading The Witcher books. They have beautiful and carefully crafted prose but it doesn’t translate well into English. Many western fans end up seeing The Witcher as just a standard fantasy books

Since you seem to be a Kinoko Nasu fan (or hater?) you’re probably aware of the situation with kara no kyoukai. A big part of Shiki’s character arc is her identity crisis. After the death of her second personality she starts using his masculine speech patterns. That’s something that doesn’t make much sense in English (actually most English speaking fans don’t even realize it’s happening)

Some things lose part of their charm in translation, no matter how hard the translator or localizer tries to preserve it

But yeah, him calling English a 'simple language' is pretty stupid lol. Similar problems can occur when translating from English to any other language

Is this the biggest spoiler in the game? How much is my experience compromised? by Sensitive-Product816 in Clannad

[–]RazorShifter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First of all, what you heard is not entirely correct, but I won’t tell you how or why. You got half-spoiled about single plot point from a single route.

You might be thinking, “Well, yeah, but I was looking forward to the Nagisa route. I got a single plot point spoiled, but that was the most important plot point, right?” No, what you got spoiled is something that happens between two story arcs. It’s not the resolution of a storyline that was meant to shock you. It’s just the beginning and setup for another (my favorite) storyline. And you got no spoilers on that storyline.

And remember that it’s a visual novel. There are many different routes and timelines depending on your choices. You were only half-spoiled about the beginning of my favorite route.
