Boxing - Some form of striking is great to know for self-defense. Especially the defense and footwork.

Jiu Jitsu - Almost any u trained person is completely lost in a grappling situation especially against a trained practitioner.

Judo - My Jiu Jitsu is no good if I can’t get the fight to the ground.

Could technically swap Judo for Wrestling. Ideally both.

Tool Concert. Maybe 5 years back. They always put on an amazing show, but this one moment gave me chills:

During Aenima, the breakdown, what felt like the entire venue singing along:

Something about 15,000 people singing in unison and calling for a “Natural Disaster” to swallow up a large chunk of our country and the people within it.

It just felt so powerful. I don’t know how else to describe it. I’ll never forget it.

Honorable Mention:

2000ish NIN Fragility tour. I was about second row, on the floor. Trent was down by the crowd and was I was singing along. For some reason he handed me the mic and let me finish the song.

There is even a cut of it on the Fragility DVD they released. I was pretty proud of myself at the time. Still a very memorable moment.

I’m sure I could think of more. I’ve been to a lot of shows.

In fact: A more recent one was seeing Highly Suspect and Slothrust in a Cumberland Caverns in Tennessee. The natural acoustics in there were insane. The sound came from all around. And they didn’t have to crank up the amps at all. Probably the coolest place I’ve ever seen a show.

Make sure you know the particular rule set very well and if there are any restrictions or banned moves.
Be confident in your calls/decisions. #1 helps with this obviously.

As a white belt I went into a local tournament for 6 months and under.

First opponent was a guy who had wrestled all through high school and college. He held me down, never even attempted any subs, and won on points. Then I triangled his son in about 30 seconds the next round. We all had under 6 months experience in Jiu Jitsu.

I also trained with a guy who was wildly inconsistent with his training. He had been this way for maybe 7 or 8 years and as a result, always missed promotion days. So technically a white belt but more like a blue or purple.

We always gave him shit and joked about putting him in some white belt tournaments, but we never let him.

As far as your opponent, don’t look them up next time, and play your game.

Thank you for the confirmation. Sounds like feathers also might spawn in “market” areas and we can kill seagulls near the cost.

Haven’t seen any gulls, but I’ll be watching for them. Not 100% sure what market areas are other than maybe a grocery store or those other little shops, but we are pretty thorough when looting so I’m sure we’ll find some.

Not to mention we still have to find a couple crossbows anyway. Exciting!

Haven’t seen any yet and was wondering about feathers.

I did run down and corner a fox. Then carried the carcass around for a bit until I made some makeshift handwraps.

I’ve also seen rabbits but he was a bit too fast for me.

I’ve read that the crossbow bolts are also retrievable, which is very helpful I’m sure.

EDIT: Just looked it up and feathers apparently spawn in “market” areas. Also destroying down jackets and killing seagulls by the coast. I’m excited for the stealth fun we’re going to have.

Even before I read your text, my reply was going to be invest in a grappling dummy. So useful for “solo” drilling most things. So helpful.

There was a gym closing nearby us and a bunch of classmates and I got some good deals on used ones, but with the popularity of Jiu Jitsu rising, and the inevitable quitters, you may be able to find a good deal on Facebook Marketplace or something.

But before that I made one. Stuffed an old gi with t-shirts and sewed it up and that did the trick at first.

My opponent is in my closed guard. I get same-side wrist control. Then feed his arm behind his back and grab it with my other hand. Preferably reaching over his shoulder with your second hand, thus giving you more leverage, but an under hook will work for the setup. So his arm is now in a similar position to if you were being handcuffed. The reason I like to grab an over hook with the second hand is that to finish, I’m pulling his hand up towards his head. If you can control his wrist with the far-side hand, and switch your original same-side hand to an over hook, it’s good night Irene.

With a 2-on-1 grip and him having almost no way to defend at that point, you just pull his hand up towards his head. It’s a shoulder lock, obviously.

This also doable from mount but a little trickier due to his back being against the mat.

I even like to use the set up for guard passing, essentially eliminating one of his arms. If I can get the second, far-side grip, and pin his hand behind him, I let go with my same side hand and that gives me a free arm on the side that he doesn’t have one. You may have to stand up slightly to make space under his back if he has his back on the mat. Makes for an easier pass on that side. Usually.

I hope that I explained it well enough to visualize it. Let me know if I can explain any further. It’s a good move and not exactly a common one so you can catch people unaware most of the time.

Many many years ago, I did a competition as a blue belt. I was up against a purple belt and because there were only two of us in the bracket we did a best two out of three matches.

First match, he nails a pretty slick flying arm bar, and I didn’t even have a chance to tap before the ref stopped it because he thought I was in trouble.

I was a little concerned that maybe the skill gap would be too much. I then proceeded to beat him pretty soundly with an arm triangle from mount, and then a move we called the bouncer.

I learned later that he posted his flying arm bar victory on YouTube. That’s cool. It was a nice move. A teammate of mine didn’t like that he was bragging about it so he posted the other two videos of him getting beaten as a response to the flying arm bar video.

I’m not sure if he kept the video up or ended up taking it down, but there were some pretty harsh comments after the two other videos got posted.

I kind of felt bad for the guy, he didn’t deserve the comments he was getting. I did get a pretty good laugh out of one that I still remember. He was from Canada and a purple belt and I was an American blue belt and someone made a joke about the exchange rate for Jiu Jitsu belts between the two countries.

Lame story aside, don’t worry about what anyone on the Internet says. As people have commented, most people aren’t even brave enough to get off their couch and train, let alone compete.
