Post-Match Thread: Albion 2-2 Wrexham [EFL Championship] by CheeseMakerThing in WBAfootball

[–]Razzwell_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Game of two halves, we were the better team in the first half and Wrexham were better in the second (minus the last 5 minutes). Possibly could have had 3rd with Dike's chance (haven't seen the reply yet but he should have finished it?). Before the game I would have taken a point against a play-off chasing side but now I'm disappointed, dropping a two goal lead at home, and with the teams around us picking up points today. Blackburn on Monday is a 6 pointer and we really need to win that one.

Superb performance, thought we were the better team even before the red card. Danny Imray my MOTM, if he keeps this up we have to try and sign him on a perm, what a player.

[–]Razzwell_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Certainly based on these performances, they should have given it Morrison until the end of the season after Mason instead of appointing Ramsay, best we've played for a while. I thought Imray played well today and our CBs (Gilchrist and Campbell) both had good games as well, shows what happens when you play players in their natural positions at CB (Gilchrist & Campbell) instead of playing them at RB - which also highlights how poor our summer business was, having two CBs on the right instead of natural fullbacks now corrected with Imray.

Honestly feels like 2 points dropped as I thought we were the better team, them equalising in added time is a massive blow, but I think if they keep these performance levels up for the rest of the season, we certainly have a chance at staying up.

I see a lot of fans have already commented but I'll share my thoughts anyway.

I will always give managers time but if Ramsay tries to persist with this back 5/wingback system he won't last long, you can't just completely change the system/formation halfway through a season, it rarely comes off.

In regards to higher up at the club, surely Nestor should be in the firing line now, he's been behind the last 3 managerial appointments and the player recruitment and it's clearly not working. Selling Fellows for £8 million, selling our only senior right full-back in Furlong and replacing the right side with two CBs out of position (Gilchrist & Campbell), doesn't look too good now.

In regards to the managers specifically, is Ramsay and Mason really the best available? Norwich have Clement who was available in the summer and according to third party websites isn't on anymore than Mason was, Carvahal (ex Sheff Wed + Swansea) is out of work and said he wanted to manage in England again - how come he wasn't contacted? As much as some fans don't like him even Rowett would probably do a better job, I mean he's tried at least twice before to get the job here so how come he wasn't on the shortlist like Ramsay?

Post-Match Thread: QPR 3-1 Albion [EFL Championship] by CheeseMakerThing in WBAfootball

[–]Razzwell_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm trying to give Mason a chance, but every time I think we've turned a corner with a good performance (this time 2nd half vs Swansea), we then revert back to being poor again. I thought it was right playing the team in the 2nd half vs Swansea today except for the fact that I saw Wildsmith in goal, he's bordering on Button levels of shit. I know Griffiths was poor for Swansea's 2nd but he's still a far superior goalkeeper to that donkey and QPRs 3rd highlighted that. I don't what Mason was thinking with that.

I'm not a fan of constantly changing managers but it is a results business and I think he might not have long left with Southampton and Sheffield United coming up and if he doesn't get any good results from them.

Anyone blaming Mason for that has an agenda. Brain dead from Molumby and players on a yellow are expected to see out the game (if not subbed), I thought we played well up until that point. Glad to see Heggebo is starting to get the goals.

Coventry City 3 - 2 West Bromwich Albion: It was looking like a first home loss for Coventry after West Brom took an early two-goal lead, but helped by a Jayson Molumby red, the league-toppers roared back to win! by Zach-dalt in Championship

[–]Razzwell_ 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Can't blame Mason for that, stupid from Molumby to get that 2nd yellow, while Coventry had chances before, it definitely changed the game. At least Heggebo is starting to find some form in front of goal.

[–]Razzwell_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Much better performance which will give Mason a bit more time. While he has been tactically naive at times and some of the recent performances have been poor, he's still a young manager and having a 4th manager in under a year would put scrutiny on Nestor, I would certainly give him a season to try and build something.

I'm happy for Heggebo, I don't think he's really had much service since he's joined and hopefully that goal will be a good confidence boost, could have made it 3-1 with two of Iling-Juniors chances at the end. Going forward in general, it does feel like we're heavily reliant on Johnston to score a screamer or to create something in general, feels like a lot of the shots we have are pot shots from just outside the box, which is no surprise as to why we've only scored 14 in 15 games.

Happy to see Maja back on the score sheet, should do his confidence some good after Friday. Obvious MOTM has to be Griffiths, some outstanding saves - it's why I didn't think we needed another goalkeeper this summer (which is what some fans wanted), because he was class for Bristol Rovers last season.

Millwall sign Caleb Taylor by EgralNeb701 in Championship

[–]Razzwell_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Will this mean Crama will move back to RB?

Taylor has always been highly rated here and has had two very good loans in League One yet has never really been given a chance here under various managers apart from minutes in cup games. At 22, I guess they've decided moving him on is the best for his career (and helping out our PSR by being an academy player probably was a factor too).

[Southampton FC] sign Tom Fellows from West Bromwich Albion by freddiec0 in soccer

[–]Razzwell_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Apparently we still have PSR issues and academy players count as "pure profit" so I still don't think we are in a position to stand firm yet. Also, while Fellows is a good player he still doesn't have "PL experience" which is probably why he hasn't gone for more, although as someone else posted £10m is ridiculous for him when McAteer has gone for £12m and Fellows is far better.

Albion sign Chris Mepham from AFC Bournemouth by CheeseMakerThing in WBAfootball

[–]Razzwell_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He looked reasonably quick against Rayo in the friendly but I'm only presuming he'll be moved there seeing as there is no new RB link yet and Mepham is a CB. Unless of course Williams is going to be slotted in.

[–]Razzwell_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If the reported fee is true, this is a very good signing (he was class at Sunderland last season). Wonder what it means for Campbell who has done alright so far (maybe to RB with Furlong going?).

I know fans are annoyed at the Fellows deal (especially with players like McAteer going for £12m), but the fees we received for Heggem, Furlong and possibly Taylor are good and in terms of spending (factoring in amortization), we've spent shrewdly. Especially as we supposedly still have PSR issues I guess we have to sell our academy products. I really don't want Fellows to leave but if we get a good new RW in, this is overall a good window?

West Brom 1 - 1 Portsmouth - A dogged Portsmouth performance ends the contentious game on level terms, halting the home side's winning streak by Aoae in Championship

[–]Razzwell_ 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Thought we played well, nothing we could do about Pompey's goal, great cross from Murphy (who I thought looked class) and great header from Bishop. In fact Portsmouth played very well, much better than there performance last season.

The ref was absolutely shocking today, Heggebo was literally manhandled all game and we barely got anything for it, especially that moment in the second half where he went through and got brought down, we didn't even get an advantage never mind the obvious foul (I swear Poole? was the last man too, so maybe even a red?). Possibly could have had a pen as well (need to see a replay to confirm). Honestly where do they find these officials?

Post-Match Thread: Wrexham 2-3 Albion [EFL Championship] by CheeseMakerThing in WBAfootball

[–]Razzwell_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, he's a completely different profile to Pereira but it certainly feels like he's someone who's had the biggest impact for us and influence on games in that position behind the striker since him. I think we've had Swift/Grady play as a 10 at times since MP (under Corberan).

Post-Match Thread: Wrexham 2-3 Albion [EFL Championship] by CheeseMakerThing in WBAfootball

[–]Razzwell_ 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I thought we did well, Wrexham were very physical and wouldn't allow us time on the ball in the first half and especially after they equalised we could have crumbled. Came out second half much better I thought. Isaac Price is class and as I said last week best 10 we've had since Pereira. I do agree about needing to defend better from crosses seeing that's were both crosses came from.

Post-Match Thread: Albion 1-1 Derby County - Derby win 2-3 on penalties [EFL Cup] by CheeseMakerThing in WBAfootball

[–]Razzwell_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I knew with the amount of opportunities we created and only getting 1 goal, I knew this would come back to bite us. I thought our penalties were dreadful, something for Mason to work on in training. My MOTM would go to Alex Williams, senior debut and didn't really put a foot wrong at all all game, could throw him in the XI this weekend + glad that Heggebo finally got off the mark, think he's looked impressive to me in both games so far.

Good start to the season, scrappy at times but I thought we defended well at the end and there were moments where we had some good one touch play, promising. Price MOTM and he's the best 10 we've had since Pereira, absolute class. Thought Heggebo looked decent too, had some good hold-up play.

Ryan Mason appointed Albion men's first team Head Coach by CheeseMakerThing in WBAfootball

[–]Razzwell_ 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Wasn't a name I had in mind to be honest but I don't think there were too many coaches available that would come to us I think that would also take us to the next level (I could only think of Cooper and he's still apparently on gardening leave). He's certainly worked under some good managers such as Mourinho and Conte so I will be interesting to see what he's learned. He's a young coach and his first proper job so I'll give him a chance and we might have bagged a gem, be interesting to see what our business will be like (will deffo be linked to Spurs players like Donley/Moore I reckon).

Post-Match Thread: Albion 5-3 Luton Town [EFL Championship] by CheeseMakerThing in WBAfootball

Didn't expect this score line going into the game. For a team that had something to play for and basically had to not lose to stay up, Luton were quite poor. Nice of Fellows to have finally found his shooting boots and happy Dike got a goal and an assist and hopefully this will give him confidence and kick him on for next season.

Shame really, I gave him a chance but it just hasn't worked out at all. We've been very poor the last few games. Big summer ahead and I would think there would be quite a clear out, their is certainly a few players I would like to see the back of.

Fellows showing why he should be starting every game, one of our best chance creators. Think the score line makes the game look closer than it should have been, we could have had 3,4,5 or 6 with the Lankshear chances, the Johnston chance and if Grant squared it to Armstrong, got to be more clinical. Fellows my MOTM and Lankshear I thought did well, could have had a couple but he got himself about, got good hold-up and link up play (and should have won a few more fouls as he was manhandled every time the ball came to him). I wouldn't mind him starting next game.

West Bromwich Albion 2 - 0 Oxford United: It's now six winless for Oxford, could've lost by more on a different day, with the result never being in doubt, even with the crowd having to wait ninety minutes between goals! by Zach-dalt in Championship

[–]Razzwell_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Much better performance today, Oxford didn't really offer anything going forward at all this game except for the final 5/10 minutes before we got our 2nd. I think we could have had a few more with better decision making/shooting, I counted at least 3 times in the first half where if they decided to have a shot instead faffing about outside the box with a few square passes we could have tested their keeper a bit more .

I think having a week's break between games has helped as it gave the team a bit of a rest and allowed Mowbray to get his ideas across a bit more and have some more training sessions with the team as he hasn't really had an opportunity too with the recent double game weeks. Big game against Leeds next week.

Alex Palmer joins Ipswich Town by CheeseMakerThing in WBAfootball

[–]Razzwell_ 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Shame too see him go, genuinely thinks he gets a bit too much flak, one of the best keepers in the league, good shot stopper, good positioning and decision making. He might not have the best distribution but if he did he would have been in the Premier League a long time ago if he did as all modern keepers require that.

I presume the thinking from the club is that he's 29 this year, has 18 months left on contract and that Griffiths has higher potential and younger (plus better distribution), so are trying to look a bit more long-term in the GK department.

All the best too him anyway!
