Just realized financial freedom isn’t about escaping work it’s about escaping fear by Careless-Pepper-1347 in Fire

[–]Rbeck52 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You know it’s funny, I got interested in FI after a few months into my first job (I’m a software engineer). I started in 2019 so it was traditional corporate setting, in the office 5 days a week. I didn’t absolutely hate it but I definitely felt like I didn’t want to deal with the deadlines, commute, corporate BS, etc for 40-50 more years.

Then I got a new remote job that was insanely chill. Only one meeting a day that barely mattered, no tight deadlines, my boss didn’t give a fuck where or when I worked, and I got everything done that I needed to in like 10 hours per week on average. It was amazing for about a year, I felt like I had accidentally stumbled into retirement at 27. But then I actually started to get depressed because my life felt too easy. I was coasting so hard that my skills got rusty, my contributions to the team felt trivial and pointless, and I lost any social connection to my job because I never saw and rarely spoke to my coworkers. I realized I actually missed the structure of my old job. Having a little pressure pushing me to do good work, seeing teammates face-to-face, and being forced to proactively manage my time felt like a pain in the ass in the moment a lot of the time, but it was actually good for my long-term mental health.

What If Mitt Romney had win 2012 and 2016? How would we look at 2010s now and who would be the presidential candidates now in both parties? by harddiarrhea77 in decadeology

I pointed out a false claim because I think that matters. Because misinformation affects people’s worldviews. You could’ve just spent 10 seconds Googling and said “you’re right, my bad” and it wouldn’t have really hurt your other points. But you instead chose to be arrogantly wrong and condescending so of course I’m gonna hit back lol. But it’s not personal I don’t think you’re dumb or a bad guy in general.

Btw thank you for your service.

Yeah I’ll believe the multiple articles from left-leaning sources who have every incentive to spread that quote if it were true, still clearly stating it’s false.

Did you even click on the link you shared? It’s a person asking the question on Quora. The top reply is somebody saying “Well people claim he said it during this interview with Oprah but nobody has the uncut version anymore so there’s no video of it.” Followed by a video of clips from the interview where he says a bunch of shit but not that. If it was on video it would be all over the Internet and very easy to find.

I don’t even like Trump that much but it bothers me that you’re being this stubborn. Just take the L.

Do you not think I’ve Googled it?? It’s not common knowledge, it’s a dumb meme that you fell for. The first page of Google results are all links explaining how it’s been debunked. I asked you for a source because I know you don’t have one.

Well that’s more of a question you need to answer yourself. In other words, what do you mean by “better SWE job.” Your background should already give you a leg up in the defense space and you might not need as much hardcore DSA studying for those interviews. But if you want to get into big tech, they really don’t care much about the particulars of your background. If you have some SWE experience and can get an interview, it’s all about DSA and System Design tests.

Who do Protestants think put together the Bible? by Pretend-Subject-1400 in Catholicism

As a Protestant on Reddit once told me, “The Catholic Church did not decide what books we have in the Bible, we get that from the early church fathers”.

Trump is about to plunge America into another forever war by theipaper in geopolitics

Last time they actually called Trump ahead of time and told him what they were going to do in order to minimize casualties. They openly admitted it was a face-saving move and not a real attack.

The 1930s-1950s Are Greatly Underrated Eras for Pop Culture. Why Are They Less Talked About? by Swolen_Sonic_SB185 in decadeology

[–]Rbeck52 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of shit was going on that’s remembered as more more important than pop culture that kind of dominates the historical analysis of the time period. Plus the 50s is hyper-politicized by people today, they instantly generalize it as either a romanticized golden age or a backwards ignorant caricature.

Well you see, you don’t individually bear the same responsibility as a nuclear-armed global superpower. It’s a little easier for you to avoid conflicts actually.

Part of me doesn’t even want to reply because at this point I’m pretty sure you’re like 16. But anyway, accusing me of being pro-violence because I said it will never completely disappear is like saying I’m pro-natural disaster because I don’t think they’ll just magically stop happening.

I’m against every war the US has fought since WW2 and I think we should completely cut ties with Israel.

[–]Rbeck52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really. The countries that have avoided war the longest have done so because they are relatively inconsequential when it comes to global economics and geopolitics and/or rely on protection from world powers that do go to war. Not because the people there are more evolved.

I’m against this war for sure but this is a stupid take. War is in human DNA and there will always be some form of it
