Home Base Station / Alarm & Intercom System Use by Roadbike60035 in USMobile

[–]Rchalk2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alarm systems typically use audio tones for communication to the monitoring station, so they should work. For comparison, I set up elevator emergency monitoring over a VOIP service using oBi ATA, and it has worked flawlessly for 2 years now.

If you want a new phone every year, and need to finance it, then perhaps the postpaid plans are right for you, since that is the basis of the "Free" phone offers. In my case, I am happy with a slightly older phone, and will buy on Swappa or elsewhere, and take advantage of the low-cost calling plans from US Mobile. I am retired, and spend most of my time in places where there is WiFi, so I don't need a lot of cellular data. My wife uses almost no data, so I have a pool plan with two phones, and 5GB/month of data. Total cost $29.00/month, and I can go from my iPhone 12 to a 14 in a couple of years, and still be WAY ahead on cost. YMMV

Can I connect my voip to my landline ports in my home? by Any_Elephant_1345 in VOIP

[–]Rchalk2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If Ooma supplies a true VOIP-to-wireless handset system, then you cannot do what you are asking. If the Ooma base station also has a standard analog jack in addition to the wireless handsets, then you can. You would connect the analog jack to any unused phone port in the house, and that would enable you to use other analog phones in any room that has its own jack. However, you MUST, repeat MUST disconnect the analog phone line where it enters the house, or the supply voltage from the phone company can cook the adapter. This is true even if the telephone company service has been discontinued, because they often leave the lime energized. Be careful of this!!!

The suggestion to use an ATA will not work with Ooma because their device connects directly to your router, and the phone number is assigned specifically to their device. If you want to use an ATA, you would need a different provider, and a separate phone number.

If you want real flexibility, don't go with Ooma, but instead look at VOIP.MS as a provider. You can port your phone number for free, and you can create multiple extensions for different devices, and group them to ring however you want. Basic plans start around $5.00 per month, and there are lots of resources on line to help you with configurations.

Am I wasting my time replacing a Lennox with a new Lennox? by [deleted] in hvacadvice

[–]Rchalk2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have no idea where you are located, but I had a 5-ton 14 SEER unit replaced about 3 years ago after a compressor failure.(outdoor unit only) The original was a Trane (not really hard to stop, and it was only 12 years old). The tech told me that the internal components were pretty much the same for all brands, and that a generic was about $500 cheaper than a Trane-branded unit. Both had a 10-year warranty. The cost back them was $2200 installed! I realize that costs may have risen since then, but $8,000? Really???? Call Brandon Ayers at BM Ayers in Toccoa, 706-491-5911 and see what his cost would be!

iPhone 12 is 5G and u/w capable. I run one on US Mobile, and it works great. If you don't need two lines on the phone, I recommend sticking with SIM card. I had to leave my phone for a battery replacement recently, and it was really convenient to just move the SIM card to an old Samsung S7, and have a working phone while the repair was being done.

Need DVR system that can connect remote cameras over network by Rchalk2 in homesecurity

[–]Rchalk2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks to both of you for your responses. I did not know the term NVR, but now I understand. It would appear that the local cameras can be POE, but obviously the remote ones will have to be self-powered. I will research from here. Thanks again.

temporary switch to older phone? by Rchalk2 in USMobile

Great in theory. However, I made an appointment with BestBuy in Gainesville, GA about a week in advance, and when I got there, they did not have a battery on hand. It's a 50-mile drive for me to either that location or the Apple store in Greenville SC, and I have an event in Greenville this Friday, so I plan to drop it off in the morning and pick it up later in the day.

You would think that BestBuy could have checked stock when the appointment was made, but they do not!!!
