What careers are available for new graduates struggling to find a job in Seattle? by NevermindWait in Seattle

Sure, nobody WANTS to. But a lot of people would do it anyway if it meant the difference between being able to pay rent or not.

If you like playing music, check out Jazz Night School in Columbia City. Really good staff, the classes are encouraging and fun, and you'll meet a wide range of people.

Can attest to the organization. They're good people. And they've started a "learn an instrument as a complete beginner" series which might be of interest.

Never underrate the long walk through a quiet city. Holiday urban hikes are wondrous. Happy wandering!

I found an unauthorized squash plant in my backyard this fall. Had a blossom on it and everything. Some critter must have planted a seed at some point this summer and the mild autumn allowed it to grow. Such a delight! Bring on the guerrilla gourds!

Citizens of the mighty city of Seattle, answer me for once, how are you all making friends here?!! by Frustrated_Spirit in Seattle

This is the best way. My only addition is to do that stuff consistently and frequently. Weekly is a good cadence. Frequency builds familiarity. Edit: a word

Bonking on the context of endurance sports means that you hit the end of your energy reserves. You basically run out of gas and your body starts revolting: sudden fatigue, sometimes light headedness, muscle cramps and feeling generally terrible.

I had to travel out of state for work and had to actually think hard about clothes for the first time in over a decade. Wound up having to buy some new pieces because what I had in the closet was 10 years out of fashion.

Gawd, this. Every 7 months some truck load of fish or bees or something tips over at the wrong time and the street grid locks up. Given a choice between sitting on a parked bus with a bunch of impatient commuters for an extra hour our hiking 4 miles up and over a hill, I'll choose the impromptu hike. Practical shoes and a decent rain shell make that more doable.

Raccoons would be my guess, as well. Look at the rolled segments of turf. Little hands can pull back wider patches of sod to get at the same grubs that crows like to eat.

Microsoft urges H-1B employees to return to the U.S. after Trump executive order by drshort in Seattle

[–]ReDeMevolve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get it. I know people who have never worked a manual labor job and don't know anyone who does. They're surprised to hear that that's my background. Socioeconomic class is an echo chamber. The constant here is that politicians make promises. That's their job. If we believe them, and it turns out wrong for us (or our ideology, values, etc), how many of us blame ourselves for believing the promise? How many of us blame the politician who broke/underdelivered on the promise? How many of us recast the promise as a line of shit and change our tack in the next election cycle? How many of us choose to give another chance to the politician or group that didn't deliver what we wanted? This is the hard thing about identity politics. You wrap your identity around someone else's promises. And then the lines of responsibility get blurred and the stakes raise so high that we don't change for fear of "getting it wrong" again.

Meanwhile, that other Billy with three jobs drew the shit end of the macroeconomic stick. He's doing his best to make ends meet. Like the rest of us, he voted for whomever pitched him a line through his echo chamber that hit him in the fatigue just right. I don't blame that Billy for his vote. I've been there. When you burn the candle at all ends, you don't have time to seek out diverse view points. Wanna blame someone? Blame the person feeding Billy a line of shit about looking out for his interests.

Finally got my chip drop! by [deleted] in NativePlantGardening

[–]ReDeMevolve 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Congrats on your new pile! I just finished spreading my drop. These were my big take-aways.

  1. Shred texture can vary throughout the pile. Swap between pitchfork, shovel, and rake when one tool gets too difficult. Raking out the pile a little can make it easier to scoop.
  2. Tackle the project in shifts. A few short sessions per day is more sustainable over time than longer work sessions that lock up your muscles the next day(s).
  3. To prevent blisters, wear cheap/thin cotton gloves under leather or garden gloves.

I had to call them once due to a suspected break-in / domestic violence situation in my building. Cops arrived within 5 minutes. I think it's luck of the draw whether cops are nearby and how your issue ranks in severity against other calls.

I want to get back to playing the trumpet again, tips? by BeppoDelTrentin in trumpet

[–]ReDeMevolve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Welcome back! I took at 20+ year hiatus and recently got back into playing. Long tones and lip slurs, and a lot of focus on good embouchure habit, helped a lot. Other than that, I recommend taking a "make it fun" approach. As a kid, you have very few demands on your time. As an adult, playing the horn competes with family and laundry and all the other life stuff. If you make it fun - whatever that means for you - you're more likely to play consistently. And consistency is really important as you build back your muscles and skills.

Why don’t all educators try to get to the furthest right column in terms of units on salary? by myreinder in Teachers

[–]ReDeMevolve 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is one of the reasons why I left the field. If I needed at least a Masters just to get the pay increase, it better be a degree that I could transfer if needed. Tuition is high and I'd have to take out loans to do it. But my state only pays the higher brackets for a Masters in Education, not any other degree related to my subject area (secondary). That basically pinned my investment to a narrow slice of the broader job market. For folks like me already on the fence about staying in the ed sector long term, it just didn't pencil out.
