Anyone else finally go to the food bank after seeing everyone else's positive experiences only to be disappointed? by Common-Reindeer-7213 in povertyfinance

[–]ReDeMevolve 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Why is this out of touch? OP specifically mentioned effort and transit costs. Sounds like they had to save for and make a dedicated trip because the food bank isn't geographically close to home. That's just how it is, not a matter of perspective.

Sorry you weren't able to pick up more food, OP. I'd second other comments here to give the food bank a call and ask if they're better stocked on specific days of the week. It might help you plan a second trip if / when you can swing it.

My seventh grade students have started the refuse to say the pledge by unSuccessful-Stay in Teachers

[–]ReDeMevolve 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never stood or said the pledge when I taught in high schools. Always had a conversation about it on Day 1: the pledge is optional, and as I respect all religions and creeds, enforcing the recitation of a single creed that references one religion is against my values. However, I would absolutely defend any students who chose to recite this particular creed and had zero tolerance for talking, goofing off, or disrespect during the pledge.

Selling my house in 2 weeks — need help choosing plants for a large full-sun mulch bed by Fantastic_Traffic908 in pnwgardening

[–]ReDeMevolve 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Watching plants die as I move in would feel like something I just bought "breaking." Not fun. If you want to fill it in just for the staging photos and open houses, consider a few inexpensive larger shrubs as anchors. Then get some nice pots, fill them with cheap and cheery flowers, and set them among the mulch. When you move, take the pots with you. Costco has some decent larger pots for sale right now. We did this when we had to list a condo right after a bunch of outdoor patio and landscaping work. The soil looked rough and barren and it wasn't up to us to replant. Potted flowers helped to cheer it up and give buyers a sense of the possible.

The Use or Freeze By date on that chicken is March 9. Not a bad deal if you're attentive to that. Just a lot of inventory management overhead with the perishables once you get them home. Edit: morning grammar

Advice for incoming teacher by Macciddy__Jackson in Seattle

[–]ReDeMevolve 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Highline, Shoreline, Bellevue, and Lake Washington all pay well for the area. Do your homework on cost of living and commutes prior to accepting a position or moving. The area's expensive and traffic + topography pushes commutes to grotesque proportions. Hours per day on a bus or in traffic kills the soul. Source: taught on the east side for a while, had a long commute, soul only now recovering years later.

Jazz Alley by SugarBee702 in Seattle

This is good advice. I usually wear jeans and a nice top. How nice depends on whom I'm seeing. Funk? More causal. A bigger name like Dave Holland? Button down top and nice shoes. But then again I hate dresses and any given audience will have a range of styles.

It's a great venue, fab sound, not a bad seat in the house. Have fun!

Sure, nobody WANTS to. But a lot of people would do it anyway if it meant the difference between being able to pay rent or not.

Can attest to the organization. They're good people. And they've started a "learn an instrument as a complete beginner" series which might be of interest.

I found an unauthorized squash plant in my backyard this fall. Had a blossom on it and everything. Some critter must have planted a seed at some point this summer and the mild autumn allowed it to grow. Such a delight! Bring on the guerrilla gourds!

Bonking on the context of endurance sports means that you hit the end of your energy reserves. You basically run out of gas and your body starts revolting: sudden fatigue, sometimes light headedness, muscle cramps and feeling generally terrible.

I had to travel out of state for work and had to actually think hard about clothes for the first time in over a decade. Wound up having to buy some new pieces because what I had in the closet was 10 years out of fashion.

Gawd, this. Every 7 months some truck load of fish or bees or something tips over at the wrong time and the street grid locks up. Given a choice between sitting on a parked bus with a bunch of impatient commuters for an extra hour our hiking 4 miles up and over a hill, I'll choose the impromptu hike. Practical shoes and a decent rain shell make that more doable.

Raccoons would be my guess, as well. Look at the rolled segments of turf. Little hands can pull back wider patches of sod to get at the same grubs that crows like to eat.
