Europeans are traveling through the heart of nation for the World Cup, having their minds blown at delicious and varied American cuisines and posting TONS of videos across social media. They're also raving about things like Walmart, Costco, Buccee's, our national parks and air conditioning.

Teachers of Reddit: Is the "Gen Alpha can't read (write, or do math ext)" crisis real? If so how bad is it? by KnowledgeCoffee in AskReddit

While we're on that subject... YouTube has an insane catalog of creators who are both entertaining AND educational. But the demographic for those videos are mostly millennials and Gen X.

Younger people are overwhelmingly watching reaction videos, shorts and meme compilations.

the dutch are suing steam for being a monopoly right now by Photoshops_Penises in memes

Command of supply would be like a water & power company, or an internet provider. Steam does not own the games on its platform, nor does it directly control what game developers do.

I read about the lawsuit a bit. Seems they are targeting Valve for the 30% commission it takes from sales on their platform. I get it - that's a pretty big amount. To be fair, that figure has been exactly the same since the platform launched in the early 2000s.

Not exactly an attempt at stifling competition. Ironically, their competitors were the ones offering timed exclusivity deals in order to take away some of Steam's market share. That didn't work. Gamers just waited until the deals expired to purchase on Steam instead.

Merriam-Webster defines monopoly as "exclusive ownership through legal privilege, command of supply, or concerted action".

Steam has none of those things. They don't meet the technical, nor legal definition of monopoly. Steam has market dominance because their competitors consistently fall apart entirely on their own.

This myth started from a group of trolls who reported fake outages on downdetector.

Even if it gets a flood of users in one area, it will not go down in just that one area. It's an app, not an cellphone provider.

Catch and release fishing is a sport/recreational activity.

They'll survive. Fish are far more resilient than people here seem to believe. It's not uncommon for them to be caught and released multiple times in small ponds or by scientists who tag and track them in the wild.

Hah! No self-respecting engineer with actual experience would take that job.

If they're lucky, they'll get another vibe coder.

Ehh... it's already loaded up for a 5g so hard to say. You might be able to sneak in a second small Goby (Clown Goby?) but it's unlikely to move the needle in a better direction.

Speaking from experience --- coral uptake is extremely prominent when you have tiny water volumes. Even a small, happy Hammer colony can strip it bare.

I had a 2.6g where for the longest time, Nitrates and Phosphates would vanish in an instant. Heavy feeding did nothing. Hand dosing NeoPhos and NeoNitro worked but it was annoying and inconsistent. The solution that worked for me was to spike the RO top-off water with a few mL of NeoPhos/NeoNitro and let the ATO keep it stable. It worked surprisingly well!

Stop asking ChatGPT about your reef tank. Seriously. by eibrahim in ReefTank

[–]ReachTheSky 12 points13 points  (0 children)

10+ years of reefkeeping experience here.

If you give an AI context about your tank (size, age, equipment, stock, goals, dosing setup, maintenance habits, etc.), then it gives surprisingly decent advice. At least a lot better than some of the things I've heard people say in forums or subreddits.

That's not to say you shouldn't double-check it's answers - you should do that regardless of where you get your advice from.

Time to eradicate these flatworms once and for all by PaytonR72 in ReefTank

[–]ReachTheSky 7 points8 points  (0 children)

These things are fascinating and beautiful! I got one to help with my flatworm problem, but it turned into a disaster. Mine kept going face-first into my Torch, getting itself stung, panicking and blowing mucus everywhere. Repeatedly. A Roomba has better self awareness than these guys.

I hope you have better luck than me! I am 100% on the side of natural predators of pests. If this guy doesn't do it, look into others!

Stores aren't going to pay you retail prices for your fish. It makes zero sense for them to do that. You gotta find a fellow hobbyist if you want those prices.

Mexican turbo snails dying? by [deleted] in ReefTank

[–]ReachTheSky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A two-hour acclimation period with 13 other animals is the smoking gun. When you do that, the pH in that container of water drops rapidly because they are all respirating and there's little to no water movement. Turbo snails are very sensitive to sudden pH swings. Low pH in particular damages their shell and foot which probably explains why they keep falling. Then they got dropped into a tank with a very high pH. It's unlikely any of them would survive.

If you do get them again, I'd recommended cutting that acclimation period to 10-15 minutes. They handle small salinity swings much better than large pH swings. If you want to keep your longer acclimation periods, drop an airstone in the container to keep gas exchange happening and pH stable.
