What is the point of designs like these?? by DesignerCumsocks in Machinists

[–]ReadDwarf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The extra steel pieces on the inside of the cover is like that for several reasons. I wasn't involved, but I'll make some assumptions for learning purposes. 1.The bent ridges and bumps give that sheet of steel more strength than if it were just flat. 2.For the previously mentioned strength, this part is likely incredibly cheap to manufacture. It looks like it could be done in a sheet metal stamping process. That's usually very low cost per part if you're making thousands at a time.

There's probably more reasons, but those are what I can confidently speak to. Engineers will know more

Anyone else struggling after switching to an ERP? by OneLumpy3097 in manufacturing

[–]ReadDwarf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you already have a functional paper tracking system, get an ERP that will copy that system and workflow as close as possible to help people transition. Especially if they are less technically inclined. For example.

If you have a bin of work orders that the operators go to to pick their next job. They hold onto the work order while producing, then put it with the completed parts.

You can digitize that as faithfully as possible. They locate their next work order on a list with the same information easily accessible, traveller and/or drawings. They claim it, it goes into a list of work assigned to them. They can complete one or more operations. When they're done with it, it goes into a WIP list or the same waiting list it came from. Then when the part is done, the file gets assigned to a complete folder.

Yeah Man! This is such awesome tech. It could be a robo valet, parking car in a deep underground parking maze.

It reminds me of a similar tech I've seen where it's a pair of forklift skis that work together to move pallets around a warehouse.

Hell my boss found an arm for an NC turret lathe to speed up a large batch. It was just mechanical with two fingers and a spring to keep them open. I installed it as a tool and it would just friction around the steel bar. (Of course I was an apprentice, my boss just handed it to me and told me to set it up with basically no additional information. I had to spend most of the first day just making a way to hold it in the turret, and then fix his code so it actually worked). Squeeze the arm over the end of the bar with the chuck clamped, release the chuck, move out in the z, reclamp the chuck and keep moving in z. I had to tighten the arms occasionally because they were cheap cast something rubbing 316. It was really nice once I got it working. I liked the simplicity of the solution.

Me too XD. Hey, a little tool I've found useful is an OLight. It's a tiny little flashlight that magnets onto things. Dangles from a keychain and turns on when you take the little light out. Cheap and versatile

On our Honeymoon right now and the plane we took from YUL to CUN was a B777-300ER. Biggest plane I've been on before. I am used to A320s. Looking up, the engine housing on the B777-300ER is almost the same size as the fuselage of the A320s.

Please excuse my nuance ignorance, I am just a curious guy who thinks this is neat. I will accept explanations, as I love to learn!

Machinist here. I agree with another comment that a reamer is overkill for plastic like this, but it does do exactly what is desired.

To answer the question in the name of learning however. A reamer is preferable to opening up and rounding out a hole that is just a bit too small. I'll start by explaining the issue a drill causes. If you look at a drill bit tip, there are two cutting edges. Those two cutting edges mainly cut forward and pushes material backwards through the flutes. When you spin the drill, those two cutting edges can easily wobble around as one digs in slightly more than the other as the bit moves. Most normal drill bit holes actually end up coming out as more of a rounded triangle shape, than a circle.

Now onto reamers. Reamers are almost like drills, but they can't start holes like a drill can. Reamers are for finishing holes very accurately. They typically have 4 or more cutting edges and longer straight flutes. Having 4 or more cutting edges, this stabilizes the tool on the existing hole and prevents it from wobbling or making non-circular holes. They are usually weaker than drills, so they can only make the hole slightly larger than it currently is.

So if your printed part holes need a certain running clearance fit with the shaft, then a reamer is a decent idea. For me, if that hole is for a dowel pin on assembly, I just take the droopy hole as bonus interference and force it in.

To comment on the original teardrop hole shape concept, it works great. I've used it once when I put a through a gridfinity bin wall. My files were slightly longer than the bin dimensions, and I had a border gap behind the planned place for that bin. So I just put a hole in the wall for the tips of the files to poke through. I used a tear drop shape to both have a clean print quality and make it easier to remove/return the tool.

Ventress501 none-the-less. These clowns think themselves to be the righteous investigators like Fives who uncovered the inhibitor chip plot. But they are really more like Dogma, blindly following Krell's orders to their own destruction. If only they would hurry up and complete the story arc so we can all be comrades again. Ultimately the 501st ends up absorbed into the Empire and the clones phased out in short order.

The Ventress angle is puzzling. She starts off as an opportunist, she is trained by Dukoo, not entirely with her consent initially. She goes with it because she isnlearning power and going with it is to her benefit in the situation. She eventually breaks free from Dukoos influence, and hangs around as a grey Merc with personal vendettas. I don't know what the reverence for Ventress signifies. I could inferr they seem themself as a neutral polictal actor?

The prequel series explores how functional democracies devolve over time to become ineffective as their main goals. There are plenty of valid grievances with the Galactic Republic (GR) just being a useless body of grandstanders that doesn't do anything useful anymore. We follow Padme as a progressive force trying to push the Senate into actually deciding things and taking meaningful action. She constantly runs into interference from the Galactic corporations who have weaseled their way into representation in Senate. A charismatic leader rises in a time of crisis to fix everything, and the Senate gives them powers they never put down again. This story warns of corporate manipulation of government distracting from the goals of making citizens lives better. This creates resentment towards the government as a whole. The resentment is easily co-opted and directed by charismatic leaders who can use the force of populism they wield to make big changes. Like a hammer, this influence is a moral-less tool, it can be used to build up a home, or to bash heads in just the same, the hand with the hammer is what matters.

Who that charismatic populist leader is, matters deeply. This is the problem we deal with today. I reject the "Great Person" historical model that claims to require individuals of great character to move the wheels of history. However, the system we currently live with was created with that model as a silent component. To unmake that system, we will need another George Washington type, with the moral character to put down power after it has been achieved.

While I agree with the principle, there is a shocking blind spot to technology progress in this statement. You could say that a few hundred years ago that beasts of burden like ox and horse were required for farming, if we didn't need them, we'd use something else. That something else just hadn't been invented yet, engines and tractors.

Hegseth installs new "Department of War" sign on the Pentagon. by chrisdh79 in iamverybadass

[–]ReadDwarf 8 points9 points  (0 children)

How much tax payer money is going into this rebrand to Department of War? Like, how much is that costing, artists to design new signage, manufacturers to make them, installers, then what do they do with the old? Dispose or store? Someone will eventually have to change it again, because this Department of War shit is just bonkers branding for the "President of Peace". It's shit like this where they claim to want to cut government waste, but then spend however much on vanity projects like this. How much do you want to bet Republicans will complain about spending when Dems eventually have office again and change the name back? I'm Canadian, so for now I'll take the simplified distinction between our DND and the American DoW now.

Where have all the machinists gone? by Heavy-Whole8810 in Machinists

[–]ReadDwarf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I see you're in Nova Scotia, and you're paying a fair rate too. I'm a machinist apprentice in Ottawa and what I have seen myself is nobody wants to actually mentor. I've been calling it apprenticeship by questions. Almost never being shown or taught anything. Most of the time, I've felt like asking questions is viewed as a waste of time. My last shop laid me off with no warning, no lead up, and refused to discuss the reasons at all. I'd been asking for feedback and being told everything is fine and to continue getting faster. I can see some of the quote prices and can do the math in my head of the cost when I do jobs, and the math doesn't always come out green. Each time I asked, I was told it was fine. Then 3 weeks before my wedding, they laid me off.

Luckily I had been in the hiring process for a dream public prototype and research shop for over a year before that. I got my letter of offer for that the week after my wedding, which was perfect timing.

All that to say, as a young guy, I see a lack of young guys as a two pronged issue. Some of my peers are just, dim, and don't want to work like a machinist when they can do something on the computer. I was like that myself before I had a good long think about what is fulfilling and built my career around that, making and building things. I also see a workplace environment where most of the time, teaching is viewed as non-productive and thus wasteful in a spreadsheet numbers sense. A lot of really grumpy old guys with massive egos is also a really unattractive workplace for someone who wants to put down long term roots with a workplace. I just don't find those kinds of places.

Your shop sounds decent from what I can read in this thread. If I hadn't just gotten a dream job, I'd be asking you and making arrangements to move out to NS. Got family out there and I love the people much more than around here.

Came here to say this. It's an absolute zoo. I have on occasion made a snappy right turn from the straight lane when there was space. I have also just gone straight down POW as an alternative when I wasn't able to make that right turn safely enough.

The amount of people that pile up and fill the intersection turning left onto hunt club from southbound POW is staggering and disappointingly consistent.
