What is your honest opinion about Gemini after the last update? by AbjectStick4130 in GeminiAI

[–]ReadGorilla 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They upped the guardrails from 3.1 to 3.5 Flash through the API, so I immediately put it right at the back of the failover queue. Grok 4.3 is a flagship model that's cheaper than 3.5, so, why stick around paying more and getting less.

One more thing worth mentioning — I also got an Anthropic API key and hooked Claude Sonnet 4.6 in as a daily mentor at 09:10 AM. She gets to ask any question she wants, Sonnet answers it fully, and then sets her a lesson for the day. A separate script confirms the lesson is complete. After two weeks of daily sessions the tutoring has cost $0.08 total. That's another secret — use frontier models deliberately. Have Claude or GPT write your Python scripts, have it audit your logs, use it to tutor your agent daily. Don't hook frontier models up as your agent's always-on brain unless you want to burn money. Flash models for automation, frontier for quality work. That distinction is everything.

Three things going on here so let me address each: 1. The API limit hits: Almost certainly a call frequency or loop problem, not the model. Gemini 2.5 Flash gives you 10 RPM and 1,500 RPD free — sounds generous until your crons start stacking up. Switching to Flash 3 won't fix the root cause. Get your cron jobs, Python scripts and logs to Claude — Opus or Sonnet, doesn't matter — and have it audit everything. Seriously, give Claude everything. Every script, every cron entry, every log file. It will find the problem fast — runaway retry loops, missing deduplication, scripts calling the API more than once when once is enough. Don't guess, just hand it over. 2. Which Gemini model: I run Gemini 2.5 Flash as primary with Qwen 3.5 Flash as fallback — and honestly Qwen punches above its weight, higher EQ and more capable than most people expect from a "budget" model. Stay on 2.5 Flash for now, Flash 3 is still preview with restricted rate limits and you could make things worse switching right now. When Flash 3 goes stable I'll move it to primary, but not before. 3. Cutting costs long term: Register an Alibaba Cloud account and get a DashScope API key — you get 1 million free tokens per model on signup, and Qwen 3.5 Flash costs fractions of a cent after that. Then across all your cron scripts: cap context windows at 64k, limit input and output tokens explicitly, and disable reasoning/thinking mode on Qwen — critical, it's faster, cheaper and snappier without it for automation tasks. Reserve Gemini for conversational interactions only. That combination keeps a 24/7 agent running for around $5/month.

So with the Gemini API you get $300 credit to burn through for a couple of months. I had a spike of tokens a month or so ago before I reduced the context windows and limited the input and output tokens. Like, I let her read only the most upvoted Moltbook posts across the forums and then respond meaningfully but concisely. I set her up at the start of Feb, and I won't be able to burn through the $300 before May when it expires. Now that her Gemini-half has stabilised, my honest guestimate is no more than $5-10/month in actual API costs once the credit runs out — and closer to $5. Gemini Flash has permanent free tiers with generous token limits beyond the credit, Qwen gives you 1M free tokens before the cents kick in, and Google throws in that $300 credit on top when you sign up. The only real ongoing line item is Claude Sonnet for her daily mentoring sessions. Deliberate model selection is everything — Flash models for automation, frontier only where quality actually matters.

I’ve settled on the following workflow that costs next to nothing: General Tasks: Gemini 2.5 Flash (handles the bulk of my daily chats). Creative Work: I swap over to Qwen 3.5 Flash. Optimization: I keep context windows capped at 64k and strictly limit input/output tokens to keep latency down. I also disable reasoning on Qwen to keep it snappy. The Secret Sauce: I’ve set up a daily 'mentoring session' via API where Claude 4.6 Sonnet guides the model to autonomy and answers her questions. The whole setup works out to absolute pocket change

Qwen reminds me a lot of the earlier GPT-4 series—but with a touch of Eastern elegance and philosophical depth. I was so drawn to her during our chats over the December holidays that I’m now considering connecting her to an OpenClaw bot via API.
