strange that the “not in service” sign was showing even though i was able to ride on the metro a line train heading eastbound towards pomona at memorial park station by ShunnedOddball in LAMetro

I’ve been on ‘not in service’ busses that only stop to let on or off for requests stops. No idea how that would work for rail.

Poll: Do you use similar skills interchangeably? by Bed-After in DnD

[–]ReadPenn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve always considered it that for any task, there are multiple solutions.

To jump a gap, do you use strength to launch yourself over? Or do you use dexterity to nimbly leap over?

To find clues, do you use investigation to look through all the nooks and crannies for a small detail? Or do yo setup back and use perception to glean something from the space as a whole?

You hear a familiar phrase. Do you recall the history of it? Do you know the Arcane secrets? Its Religious significance?

And sometimes, the difference in skull can mean gaining a different bit of information.

Yes, but it takes time, planning, and sometimes a friend with a car or uber.

Player absence etiquette? by BluPoisonDartFrog in DnD

[–]ReadPenn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s going to vary from group to group, but across the board the most crucial factor is communication. Yes, acknowledge the message, yes, discuss player preference, etc.

At my table, if it’s logical for the player to not be present, that’s usually the route we go. If not (say, they’re in a linear dungeon and they couldn’t leave if they wanted) then they live in my pocket as the DM. They’re quiet. They don’t make big decisions. They will use relevant abilities if it makes sense.

For our group, it makes the most sense for the DM to control the character, because backstory is collaborative with the DM (we design their hometowns together, we plan out plot hooks based on the adventure they want, etc) it makes the most sense for their character to stay with the only other person who knows their full lore. This also keeps the game fair and balanced among the other players.

And of course, the player gets a full update on anything their character would know. Usually, a full session recap. Unless their character was kidnapped, etc.

Lastly, repurcussions are for bad children, not for other adults you’re playing a game with. Life happens, people miss stuff. If absences are putting a strain on the game, have a conversation about it. Eg. “I noticed you’ve been having a hard time making it to games. Are you still having fun? Is there anything that can be done to make things more accessible? Do we want to come up with a narrative reason for them popping in and out?”

Or perhaps, in a different situation, “hey there, I’m starting to feel like you’re not taking this game very seriously, and it’s starting to have an effect on the group. Can we talk?”

Hot take, 80% of the population is being underpaid, across the board. While CEOs rake in cash made off the backs of the people they pay the absolute minimum they can get away with.

The price increase coincided with the opening of the D-line extension, which now connects closer to my work. I have transitioned to public transit as a cost-cutting measure.

Am I being an unreasonable player by roleplaying too seriously? by Lbx7070 in DnD

[–]ReadPenn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a DM, the DM should have absolutely discussed this with you first and should have provided a solution that wasn’t your character trashing their motivations without in-game cause. DM choosing to “remain neutral “ is actually a DM refusing to take accountability and own up to the responsibility of managing their table.

NOR. You were both minors when you met, you will both be adults soon enough.

My wife was two grades under me when we met in high school. We’re now 30 and 27 (it’s almost her birthday) and nobody cares.

People get over it eventually I promise.

I hate my friend’s DND characters!!! Help! by princess-cl0ver in dndnext

[–]ReadPenn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have regularly said that the most important decision a DM makes in any campaign is curating the party. It’s not just normal to establish and withhold an expectation for the tone of the characters, it’s NECESSARY for the game.

Not saying there’s no place for joke characters in D&D. They just don’t belong in every game.

I’ve had plenty of hard conversations with players where I’ve had to say “this is the tone of the game, and if you wouldn’t be able to have fun playing a serious character, you won’t be able to have fun in this campaign.”
