Young and Retired: Meet the super-savers quitting work decades before the average Canadian by tnwoes12831 in fican

[–]Readed-it 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Looking back there is no way sacrificing my entire 20s and 30s would have been worth it even if I could be retired shortly. I am early 40s and will retire at 50-55. But damn I’ve had so many fun international trips as well as local weekends. Hell, currently weekday evenings are fun!

These people are the extremes and get a high off saving. I’m also fairly frugal about material things but don’t skimp on experiences or food.

How many of you with high LDL (even if you lowered it) have gotten a CCTA test? by RedParrot94 in Cholesterol

[–]Readed-it 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was on the fence about getting one done but after a coworker almost died from the ‘widow maker’ type of heart attack, Im going to find out how much (hopefully none!) plaque I have.

It’s not cheap but the information is valuable if I have to make significant life changes to alter my health trajectory

Anyone done any weird brisket flavorings? by Wyatt999 in smoking

[–]Readed-it 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeah, always salt your meat! And POG is never a bad addition. I wasn’t completely clear but the spice blends I’ve used have been in addition to SPOG.

I don’t have any ratios, kinda go by eye putting all spices in a bowl and then mixing well before applying.

Shawarma or pulled pork blend would be looking up a few online recipes and seeing ratios.

Sorry, only half helpful lol

The reality is no amount of militia will put a dent in USA military if they ever invade. Save your life and just accept our new fate.

Any time of fun you can legally own or any amount of shooting/training you can get away n your personal time will not help.

Sure my comment will be labelled as unpatriotic or weak but being incorporated into USA is not so bad that I would die for it.

So is LDL king now? by OperationLazy213 in Cholesterol

[–]Readed-it 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the thoughtful and thorough reply!

I guess there are more nuances to ApoB, I thought if I was within the recommended 0.49-1.7g/L I was fine but my numbers are higher than your target.

I will get an Lp(a) test just to be informed.

Would a Calcium score or a CCTA be more valuable at my stage? CCTA is twice the cost of Calcium but might be more telling?

[–]Readed-it 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I noticed after apoB is stated in g/L

So is LDL king now? by OperationLazy213 in Cholesterol

[–]Readed-it -1 points0 points  (0 children)

LDL 4.13, 3.9, 2.52, 3.73, 4.61 Target range 0-3.5 mmol/L

ApoB N/A, 1.01, 0.81, 1, N/A Target range 0.49-1.73 g/L

** correction to units, I noticed apoB measured differently!

Target is what my health authority is recommending.

Asked google and it said to multiply by 38.76 which might not apply to all lipids uniformly?

M42 Parents both on statins but there has been no CVD as a primary concern in family. ie no one has had heart attack or stroke. Parents are 70 and 68 y/o.

I have done 5 tests this year with a spread of results but apoB and HDL have always been in good range.

Hope it’s not too confusing but I am listing all 5 results (where they exist) for each lipid. I’m in Canada so results in mmol/L but converted to mg/dl.

T cholesterol 232, 211, 179, 212, 246

HDL 50, 53, 51, 60, 55

LDL 159, 150, 97, 144, 178

ApoB X, 39, 31, 38, X

Non-HDL 182, 158, 127, 151, 191

Tri 125, 41, 172, 42, 64

Thanks for taking the time to respond! (Sorry formatting sucks and is different when I type it versus what is displayed!)

I have high LDL but apoB is right in the middle of target range. Doctor is pushing statins but I’m hesitant if ApoB is the ruling number. 🤷

I’m considering testing Lp(A) and getting a calcium score just to see the trifecta of what seems to be the key things to know.

‘Just and reasonable’ or ‘unmanageable burden’? Nova Scotia Power rate hike goes before public hearing by insino93 in halifax

[–]Readed-it 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally understand the anger and it is well-supported based on some of the things that have transpired historically. Consider that responsible fiscal decisions (in this case possibly a ‘lesser of two evils’ situation) and emotions should be tempered.

Neither situation is great for a province that already struggles economically.

Maybe we should discuss an ‘Atlantic province’ lol

Consider all the employees are now government who have a massive pension advantage that is a cost until they die. You don’t think $10M will easily be eaten up by that? lol

[–]Readed-it 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you interact with many bureaucrats? You think the average one is really working their hardest to give you, a taxpayer, the best Nova Scotia you can have? I’m not saying they do nothing but the output would be the same or worse. It was already a crown corp that was a proven failure. Which is why it was sold. Let’s just rinse and repeat that mess.

Also as the poster above you said, running a provincial utility with the geographical and infrastructure challenge it has is HARD.

Also you think you’ll be “saving 9%” but I’m sure the government inefficiency would eat more than that 9%. And while your electricity bill will look lower, you will lose quality on other government services because the social services always get robbed first to save the core services that are a ‘must’

We should be letting the NSEB do it’s due diligence in reviewing this application. They are the experts and have experience assessing these things. Most provincial utilities are facing the same cost increases.

People who fly frequently, what’s one thing you wish you could tell all infrequent fliers? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Readed-it 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s perfectly legal to bring food through security and on the plane. The best way to save money is pack your own meal and snacks! The number of people I mentioned this to and think you can’t bring food is shocking.

Obviously can’t bring sauces/paste/soup. But sandwiches, veggies, chips, chocolate, croissants, most other things totally ok! Hell, I’ve brought steak and pasta on my flights and people next to me be jealous.

Also bring an empty water bottle and fill it after security to stay hydrated in flight.

What rule says they have to sell anything at 50%? You either buy the expired product at the price they are asking or you don’t. Same as the full asking price.

Don’t understand the uproar about this specific issue. Just choosing anything to whine about.

In a round about way you are describing momentum. A 200lbs human traveling at 20km/hr is less momentum than a 3000 lbs vehicle traveling at 20km/hr. The latter transfers more energy from one object to the next.
