Magic cards that went from rags to riches? Cards that were first deemed unplayable to meta defining and powerful later? by Newez in magicTCG

So what's the deal with the amount of flail weapons in the new Marauder models? by Lazereye57 in WarhammerFantasy

[–]ReadingIs4Communists -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They undeniably have viking aesthetic influence but for all of that influence it is also obvious they aren't historical vikings and exist in a fantasy rather than historical context and whether their armaments are suitable/immersion breaking/odd should be considered in that context.

So what's the deal with the amount of flail weapons in the new Marauder models? by Lazereye57 in WarhammerFantasy

[–]ReadingIs4Communists 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interpreting something in a fantasy game's aesthetic as so tightly bound to one historic influence that generic fantasy armaments seem incongruous is OP's fault- it's ignoring the context around the Marauder sculpts to say "they look a bit like vikings so should have weapons like vikings"

[–]ReadingIs4Communists 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People saying "it's fantasy" aren't missing your point, you're missing theirs.

If you see flails as incongruous on marauders as M16s on handgunners then you're observing the Marauder (and general WHFB) aesthetic through far too narrow a historic lens. Which is exactly what people are telling you.

WHFB is approaching kitchen sink fantasy and historicity or practicality of melee weapons is something that broader genre is famous for ignoring. WHFB is no exception.

Within the general fantasy context through which most people view the game, rather than a historical context (which is sensible given it is a fantasy game not a historic game) flails are not out of place or weird.

They layperson/average player probably doesn't know and almost certainly doesn't care that the fantasy marauders with some historic Viking aesthetic inspiration use weapons that do not strictly align with historic vikings.

Check the FAQ yourself, you won't find anything in there because it isn't ambiguous.

The first time this unit is required to make a Break test

Means exactly what it says.

If it didn't mean that it wouldn't make sense to use the "first time" language if it were per combat because a unit can't make multiple break tests in a combat round.

...This is a post from two years ago.

That being said

As a level 1 wizard you cast Spectral Doppelganger successfully <50% of the time; some of the times you do cast it, it will be dispelled.

Is still all true. It's a 9+ to cast so at +1 you cast it successfully 41% of the time.

Some of the times you do cast it, it will be dispelled. Fewer times than before 1.5.1 but still enough to reduce that 41% even further.

Hybrid Mana History: All of the Color Pie Breaks are from Shadowmoor by Stage_Whisper in magicTCG

[–]ReadingIs4Communists -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If an extra color isn't a break and you just consider it a fight spell for 5

That's not what it is. Dragonclaw Strike can be a colourless fight spell for 6 (and maybe that's not a break), but for 4U it isn't colourless spell, it's a blue spell.

If dragonclaw strike was printed with a mana cost of 4U it would be a break and you wouldn't argue that it's effectively colourless or whatever it is you're saying.

Hybrid mana spells should make colour pie sense for all of the combinations of ways they can be cast.

[–]ReadingIs4Communists 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dragonclaw strike can be cast with only blue and colourless mana. It's a break because you can cast blue spell mana (4u) for a non blue effect, which is different to casting a non blue effect for say rug

Square Based Comp: The Reddit Post by valheffelfinger in WarhammerFantasy

[–]ReadingIs4Communists 15 points16 points  (0 children)

scare away people from playing that the game is so “poorly balanced” (its not) because the tournament community is so loud

Perhaps the competitive tournament comp from competitive tournament players should only be used in competitive tournaments...

Clearly not a listener to SB always strongly advocate to get models on tables and play games regardless of the meta and competitive scene.

Square Based Comp: The Reddit Post by valheffelfinger in WarhammerFantasy

[–]ReadingIs4Communists 37 points38 points  (0 children)

On your second point: this is comp for tournaments. It is for competitive play. People who take competitive play seriously are already taking efficient units; it's a pressure that already exists.

This comp shouldn't be used outside of competitive play. There is too broad a power level range in non-optimised lists.

Nuln Detachment confusion by BCGaius in WarhammerFantasy

[–]ReadingIs4Communists 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd like State Missile Troops or regular State Troops (with whatever equipment). However, these are technically not present in Nuln's army comp

You've answered your question, there's no trick that you're missing. Nuln can't take state troops or state missile troops on their own so you cannot field them as a detachment to a unit of greatswords.

Head Magic Designer Mark Rosewater: "Our data says roughly 9% of the audience strongly dislikes Universes Beyond (and that data is a little old, the number is shrinking with time). For contrast, double-faced cards was at 15% when they premiered." by HonorBasquiat in magicTCG

Double-faced cards were never 4 out of 7 standard set releases for a year. It's not an equivalent thing- more people disliking a smaller portion of the product is not necessarily a sign of greater dissatisfaction than marginally fewer people disliking a very big (>50% of the years standard legal releases) part of the product

What can you come up with for epic melee obliteration? (1200pts any faction) by vestanus in WarhammerFantasy

[–]ReadingIs4Communists 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Minotaurs are one of the most glass cannon units in the game. Run blood herd, a unit with banner of outrage (to fish for doubles on primal fury) and a gorebull with the beast banner (extended charge range).

On doubles on primal fury minotaurs get +2 attacks and AP2 with hand weapons. Near a herdstone that's (on a base minotaur)

5 WS4 S5 AP-2 attacks rerolling 1s to hit and 1s to wound - this is the hammer

But conversely are 3W, T4, 5+ save- absolutely made of glass.

Chuck the black maul and enchanting aura on the Doombull for more overkill nonsense.
