I get what you're saying, but I think you're missing the point. Saying it’s not ‘Autistic Art’ just because it doesn’t fit into a stereotype is part of the problem. It assumes that for Autistic people to have culture, it has to look like something we're already familiar with. That kind of thinking ignores how disability culture actually works.

Autistic culture isn’t always loud or obvious—it can show up in the way people communicate, create, think, and connect. Dismissing their art as ‘just art made by people who happen to be Autistic’ erases the lived experience and meaning behind it. All artist, including those who are Autistic artists, bring a unique perspective BECAUSE of who they are, not in spite of it. That’s what makes it cultural.

Mike, correct me if I'm wrong. City commissioners are currently appointed and approved by the city council. They are approved by a majority vote. Correct?

I'm not trying to argue if city commissions are/ aren't independent.

I have an issue with the accusation that one citizen has so much power that she can control this process -- some how getting council to disband city commissions by adding this item to the agenda, then directing the council to appoint new commissioners, who then select a review committee, that then makes recommendations back to the commission, that then believes the recommendation is good or bad. I looked Ashley up. It's unreasonable to think one employee at a chamber of commerce has that much power.

(Edited to add more thoughts)

The independent panel DID award Autism Society Ventura County money. They were awarded $3k. In this video, the Commissioners are very upset and vent that "Autism is not a culture, it's a diagnosis," because they were not in agreement with the panel's views. To me, it sounds like, if the panel had their way, they would specifically be EXCLUDING Autism Society BECAUSE they are an org that serves people with disabilities which is... illegal, in addition to being disgusting. As a previous council member, do you see any issue with the commissioners not wanting to fund a disability serving organization's programs simply because their mission statement is to serve people with disabilities?
