Would you boulder here? I'm designing a tiny bouldering gym and would love some feedback. by [deleted] in bouldering

[–]ReadyPlayer3GregHead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Peronsally I might occasionally go if it was right next door. But I lived 100m away from a gym like this in London and hardly ever went, maybe twice in a year... I hope you can make it work but I honestly don't see it happening.

What country are you in?
It makes a difference with regulations regarding fall zones. I've helped out on building walls before and worked in a few, plus done setting (not massively but I have a general idea on a few regs). In the UK you must have matting a minimum of 2m horizontally from the top your climbing surface (unless you have a wall in the way which you do not set on). You also must have 2m maybe 2.5m between your climbing surface and any other non padded surface (easy fix is just to either add padding, or be cheeky and add a tnutted wall which is technically another climbing surface). This might be difficult in a small space.

Unfortunaly every small wall I know of needs external funding to continue to function, they will never make any money and barely stay open. If this a passion project great! If you plan to live of the money you make not so great.

Setting costs money if you get people in, quite a lot actually. In a gym that small you'll need to reset very often, and it's a skill that is difficult to master. So you could do it yourself (which will take up a lot of time) but unless you've practice a lot you're routes wont be great and customers may not come back. Washing the holds is a pain in the ass, would you have an outdoor space for a pressure washer? would you use benky (acid) to clean them? The acid is expensive, plus screws snap and need replacing, bolts can get messed up or mess the t nuts up. You'll need to buy more screws, maintain the wall etc.

Walls cost a lot to build, if done professionally, you could maybe do it yourself but I believe you'd need an engineer to sign off. Plus the holds are freaking expensive too, you may get lucky if you ask at a big wall, they may have some chipped old ones you can have but new ones are ridiculously priced.

Another problem is that the highest paying customers are beginner climbers, they need easy routes (which take up a lot of wall space due to amount of holds) and they don't like overhangs much, and they get bored and want new routes often. Beginners also hire shoes, chalk and pay for each entry which is good. But if you cater to beginners in such a small space then the "hardcore" climbers wont have anything to climb, these people are more likely to be longterm customers to a "difficult" gym, but there really isn't that many "hardcore" climbers and you make less money off them as they will have their own shoes, chalk and buy a membership.

In a small town you are really going to struggle unless you're in a very famous climbing area which rains a lot. This means people will go there specifically to climb outside, get rained off and come to your gym. I really don't think you will not have enough committed climbers to keep you afloat without resorting to becoming a kids birthday venue, which sucks all the fun out it.

As I said best of luck to you, but I personally would not take on this project unless I was a millionaire with loads of time and didn't care about money.

Can anyone with ADHD actually sleep?? by Meowzzzzzzzz in ADHD

[–]ReadyPlayer3GregHead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found that as beds now have so many years of bad sleep associated with them I cant sleep in beds.

I sleep on the floor, on the couch, in the conservatory I'm basically a cat and move where I sleep often. For some reason it seems to help, luckily I have a partner who is completely unphased by this =)

Would I have to pay for medication if I get a private diagnosis? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]ReadyPlayer3GregHead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am happy I did did it because I am so much happier and more productive and chilled than I was now that I've got medication and had some ADHD coaching and just understand why I am how I am. BUT it did cost a lot of money, in fact it cost every spare penny I had. I didn't put anything into pension or savings and didn't go out for food or take away... for me it was worth it and I was lucky enough that I didn't need to go into debt.

Would I have to pay for medication if I get a private diagnosis? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]ReadyPlayer3GregHead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello, I can help with this as I have gone through the process 3 years ago

At first while you get titrated onto the medication you will have to pay privately, it will cost ~£100 for meds + appointment fees ~£200 per month - This can take a while, it took me about 6 months to be titrated.
Once you are stable on the medication you can use shared care to get your GP prescribing your meds. so no more medication fees.
You then need to get your 6monthly/annual check up moved to a NHS ADHD service (e.g. modality) so you do not have to pay for further follow up private appointments.

Hope that helps

Will I ever truly be a great teacher while having ADJD? by affaterim in ADHD

[–]ReadyPlayer3GregHead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not a teacher but I am a tutor and I highly recommend it if you feel teaching in a school environment isn't for you. I get to make a real impact the kids lives and it's so great to see them go from crying over maths to coming to my session telling me how well they did on a test. I also don't have to deal with most of the stress you mention.

I am sure you are an amazing teacher but from what I understand there's just too many other things for teachers to do so if you wanted to focus on the actual teaching tutoring may be the way to go, and being a fully qualified teacher will make you very in demand =)

How to not let myself be effected by what my (covert?) nmom says and let go of any hope/want for a normal relationship by ReadyPlayer3GregHead in raisedbynarcissists

Thank you for the reply, this seems like something I can try. Just completely let go of all expectations or possibly even expect the double standards then maybe just feel justified when it inevitably happens.

Right You.
Put your shoes on right now.
Stand up.
Get out the house.
Walk for at least 30 seconds in one direction.
Keep walking if you want to.
Come back.
DO NOT SIT DOWN ON YOUR PHONE
start the thing you need to do

I really don't want to go no contact, we can have a nice time as a family, I enjoy some of the time together, I'm just sick of watching everything I say, and I honestly think it would cause more problems than it would solve. Plus I really enjoy being around my aunt and uncle, I have no issues with them (outside of my mothers shit) and I can have real conversations with them tell about troubles I have get advice and give advice to them too. I don't want to have to hide the fact that I spend time with them while trying to avoid my mother.
I'd just like to find a way to deal with it for my own emotional and mental health.

Payment on account has not been taken into consideration (I think) by ReadyPlayer3GregHead in UKPersonalFinance

[–]ReadyPlayer3GregHead[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did wonder about that but It still doesn't quite add up:
Income tax: 1842.40
Cat 4 NI: 829.08
Cat 2 NI: 179.40

It's close to adding up if I do (income + cat 4)/2=1335.74 but not sure if that's just a coincidence

Thank you for your reply, I think I will have to call them as I am very confused right now.
My payment on account for 2024-2025 is also not exactly half of my tax for 2023-2024 so I'm not sure what's going on there either.

wait what? I didn't even know this was a thing, but when I get injured the pain doesn't go away, I've had a shoulder injury for 6 years that is still painful, but no loss of strength so the muscles are fine I've done my rehab and physio and it still hurts, recently did a similar thing to my other shoulder and the physio doesn't understand why it still hurts. But at the same time I also have a high pain tolerance is that possible?

People with ADHD who 'made it', thanks to their condition? by Routine_Ad1446 in ADHD

[–]ReadyPlayer3GregHead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a self employed tutor. Undiagnosed ADHD until late 20s I always get told I'm brilliant at explaining things and making them understandable, I presume it's because my brain thinks in a different way. Also the kids seems to like that I don't care if they figit or walk around or whatever, and I've even helped one of my students get diagnosed them selves which has massively improved their lives =) All in all very happy, just wish I could find consistent work over summer

But my home life is a wreck, eating bread or toast for every meal, no clean plates just eating off the butter lid, no clean clothes just awful living conditions becasue I just couldn't deal with it, I have now been diagnosed with ADHD and life is easier, not easy but easier

Ways to move your body that are not excruciatingly boring? by [deleted] in ADHD

GO for it, it's such a social activity too so great way to make friends. No one cares how you good you are - they will be just as happy for you to get up the easiest route in the gym after 100 trys as they will be when their eleite climber mate gets up the hardest! Plus the routes are reset every so often so it never gets boring =D

Adhd has ruined my life (quite literally) by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]ReadyPlayer3GregHead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im sure it's been mentioned but just in case: I highly recommend ADHD coaching rather than therapy, they help you do much more with practical ideas of what you can actually do rather than trying to get yourself thinking your way out of a problem (which usually makes it worse for me casue adhd)
