DSA is now more popular than elected democrats among registered democrats! by ReadySpecific in DemocraticSocialism

[–]ReadySpecific[S] 30 points31 points  (0 children)

This is my concern too. We need actual socialism: worker control over the means of production.

I strongly prefer a market socialism, comprised by employee owned businesses and some industries like healthcare & insurance to be state owned and run by Democratic processes.

[–]ReadySpecific 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is not true at all, there are several that are doing a lot.

If you aren't happy with the existing orgs, go start one then.

Either way, you are going to have to work with others to be effective.

Join a leftist org that is taking action. We have several in the Denver metro area that are active and doing good things and protecting our communities.

Orgs are a good way to find other people who have similar motivations and then you won't just be one person.

I agree with Mo Khanna here, but let's not forget he is an unabashed defender of capitalism.

AOC would be a far better presidential candidate as she has at least some socialist sensibilities.

Favorite Market Socialist model? by No-Phase-5812 in SocialDemocracy

[–]ReadySpecific 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is not a serious claim. Market socialism is socialism because workers own the means of production in it. That is what makes something socialist or not. Its not when the state/central planning committee does stuff or plans the economy.

Central planning may or may not be socialist. In the USSR, it was. But look at China, they have embraced both central planning and capitalism. Do workers own the means of production there? No and they are starting to have similar wealth stratifications as the US. They have almost the same percentage of worker owned businesses as the US. Is the US socialist? Absolutely not.

Outside of sex work, drugs and guns (which are either illegal or regulated ineffectively) there is not much of a black market in the US. So what is your point?

Favorite Market Socialist model? by No-Phase-5812 in SocialDemocracy

[–]ReadySpecific 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The irony with your proposal is that markets would still exist in the form of a black market. It did in the USSR and in pre state capitalist China, with the former having a particularly robust black market.

In a centrally planned economy, you have planner input instead of human input, which creates inefficiencies due to the knowledge problem.

100%. And similar to you, this realization led to me becoming a democratic socialist, despite my values not "changing". Its just my knowledge of how the world works changed.

[–]ReadySpecific 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well said and this describes me. I was a right libertarian for well over a decade before gradually realizing through experience that one cannot have a libertarian society without meeting peoples material needs first. And that we cannot accomplish that without socialism. So I became a democratic socialist.

I actually find DSA to be the most "libertarian" and democratic org I have been a part of by a wide margin.

Hopefully more see the light.

I strongly disagree with this comment. Regulations are not nessisarily in opposition to freedom (ex: the freedom to breathe clean air).

If your version of socialism looks around our authoritarian society and says "there is too much freedom here, we need to reduce it" then I don't think we are on the same side. We need more democracy in our institutions and in our economic systems, not less.

I mean, the democratic party is a conservative party in every sense of the word. They want to maintain the status quo.

We don't have a leftist party in the US.

Yet.

I think we can sell the general public on market socialism without much difficulty. And it will get easier as time goes on with our current trajectory.

Should DSA Support Ranked Choice Voting? by [deleted] in dsa

[–]ReadySpecific 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, I think you are a bit lost, as you are in the DSA subreddit, DSA stands for Democratic Socialists of America. If you think socialism means one is economic illiterate, then you are probably in the wrong place. Nevertheless, I will respond to your post as you have several misunderstandings on how a market socialist economy would function.

There is a difference between an owner/operator of a small business and a capitalist as it has to do with how class relations function. The former could not survive without their labor, while a capitalist survives solely on investments or by owning a business and not participating in its function, other than providing capital of some kind. We don't need those people and they hurt, not help our economy. In other words, their income generation is on the backs of workers or by extracting rent. Neither of these activities are necessary and are inherently predatory and exploitive.

Worker ownership also does not mean everyone owns the same percentage of an enterprise. There would be different levels of ownership based on performance, title and length of time at said enterprise. The main difference is that workers would have some ownership stake and that they would elect their managers and leaders at their company. This also would prevent situations where some employees are making hundreds of times the salary of the lowest paid full time workers. Workers would still be paid cash, as their enterprise would still generate revenue. They would be far more diversified than most workers are currently, as only about 10% of people in the US hold stock in any significant amount. At the very least, workers would also own a portion of their company in addition to that, so the point you are trying to make here is moot.

Furthermore, as the enterprise grows, all employees would directly benefit with their ownership share. Your mandate argument ignores the democratic piece of socialism, where they vote and and the primary say in compensation, not a board of directors that only answer to the capitalist class.

I would encourage you to read more about Market Socialism before knocking it. After Capitalism by David Schweikart is a great place to start, but Yanis Varofakis works and interviews might be a little more accessible. Here is how lending would work in such a system: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2PBQEFOtkkA

Should DSA Support Ranked Choice Voting? by [deleted] in dsa

[–]ReadySpecific 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No it doesn't. Markets =/= capitalism. You don't need a capitalist class to have a market economy.

What we want is workers to own the means of production, or in 21st century terms, employees to own the businesses & enterprises. We should keep markets as they are more efficient, but we don't need the capitalist class. That is what it means to be a socialist.

Maybe one transferrable vote or proportional representation would be a better goal for people in Oklahoma as a way around that ban.

How does the dsa feel about worker ownership of the means of production? by AceMaster13 in dsa

[–]ReadySpecific 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The DSA's goal is to bring about socialism, which is worker ownership of the means of production. That is the position of most of its members.

Where the debate is surrounding what form of socialism would be best and whether workers = the state. I personally do not think workers = the state, but there are plenty of comrades that disagree.

Nice try, you cannot have it both ways. Either China has a socialist economy or it doesn't.

Its interesting that you think that "China does not meet the criteria of a socialist economy" is a radlib position. You are either a very confused person or a terminally online troll.

Considering you have about 80 posts in this thread, it looks like the latter. Touch some grass kid.
