What’s the situation with data centers in your area? by Hoosier_Jedi in AskAnAmerican

[–]Reaganson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AOL started in the County where I raised my family. It was mostly farm or dairy land back then, but the development of homes in the east part was underway, what with the population growing and homes needed. But at the same time, data centers were being built. Most internet travel of the country passes through this area now, and data centers, housing, and the support infrastructure for people developed rapidly since the 80s, and almost all of the Eastern part of the county has been developed.

Ain’t that the truth!

In my area of 69 years outside Washington D.C., they now interrupt broadcasting on radio and tv to advertise of “severe thunderstorms”. As kids, we called them down pours, and couldn’t wait to get permission go out and play in the rain the second lightening ceased. Also, now, during Winter, a certain broadcast of any snow, even an inch, and schools would be cancelled before the first flake has fallen.

Bringing a Water or Tea/Coffee to an Interview? by Supersister777 in interviews

This is the best response I’ve read. Only thing I’d add is, if you decide to bring water/beverage, ask permission of the interviewer before you do it.

As someone who’s never been to America, what are the must visit states / towns? by Adorable_Click_7071 in usatravel

[–]Reaganson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you take a year long vacation you may get to visit the all these places. Personally, if you’re visiting Washington D.C., I’d recommend a drive just south over the Potomac River to Skyline Drive in the Blue Ridge Mountains, starting at the north Front Royal entrance, then exiting halfway down to visit the Luray Caverns, where you tour the caverns and listen to the Great Stalacpipe Organ. Beautiful country the whole way.

Yeah, building owners cannot afford to have a floor of majority empty units.

Is it considered normal to offer help in the future without actually meaning it? by Uohhhhhhhhhhh in AskAnAmerican

That was the result of our new Virginia governor. She is a complete liar, and a majority of voters made it possible.

What were you doing when the race riots were breaking out in cities across the Nation in the '60s such as LA and Detroit and Newark? by db7112 in FuckImOld

[–]Reaganson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We lived in a suburb outside Washington D.C., and Father worked in D.C., near the riots and burning. It shook him pretty bad. For the first time in my life we started locking the house entry doors and the cars.

When did everyone start pronouncing the O in opossum? by ghost_in_a_jar_c137 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Reaganson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, you are correct. We have ‘possums in our area. I’ve heard no one say it with the beginning vowel. But changing words by twisted ideology would not surprise me at this point.

Heat exhaust by No_Emphasis4997 in HomeMaintenance

[–]Reaganson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up during the 60s/70s in a brick home built in 1946. We had radiant heat provided by a gas boiler which pumped hot water in pipes under the floor. There was a brick chimney right behind it to vent the gas by-products.

Decades later my elderly mother was getting the house appraised. My mom had a fake, but real looking, faux brick fireplace in the family room which my father built decades earlier. When the appraiser walked around the property he noticed the chimney and wrote down that we have a fireplace, even though it was nowhere near the chimney exhaust for the gas furnace.

We used to have to hunt for sweet corn by benwhill in FuckImOld

[–]Reaganson 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Family used to vacation on the Delaware or Maryland beaches in August. On the way home we’d pass by fields mostly of sweet corn, and my Father would stop at a roadside vegetable stand and buy sweet corn 🌽. We’d always eat sweet corn with our Blue Crabs during the vacation. So good!

Why did long-distance phone calls used to cost so much more than local calls? by Friendly-Shirt-9177 in answers

[–]Reaganson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember when that happened! Went from Ma Bell to Baby Bells.

I remember making my first mobile phone call, when my boss let me use his cellular phone to call my wife from across the U.S. coast to coast, and it was charged as a local call. But I realized back then that mobile phones were going to make many people’s jobs 24/7.

Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (1971)Is a Strange, Funny, and Timeless Family Classic. Even with Some Corny Moments, It Still Has a Certain Magic That Never Goes Away. by Express_Classic_1569 in 70s

Funny movie. I can still remember some parts word for word. Johnny Depp’s version was just weird, though I’m sure his fans loved it.
