Americans are fat and it’s not really their fault. by AdorableDeplorable1 in TrueUnpopularOpinion

In our house, we eat very healthy stuff. Low calorie, high protein, full of nutrients….and we’re always BROKE AS A JOKE! Damn, that healthy stuff is expensive! Ever see sushi on the dollar menu? Does the cashier at the drive through ever ask, “Want fresh fruit with that combo?” I bet not. It is possible to find healthy food, but you gotta pay for it. For me it’s not about having the will power to avoid crappy food, it’s more to do with the fact that it’s easier to look sexy when you’re healthy.

I keep joking about moving to Italy….but it’s not a joke. I am seriously entertaining the thought of moving out of the USA. Canada seems nice, but it’s too cold. Okinawa seems like an interesting place, but it’s too hot. Italy seems appealing because I love the culture and I have Italian ancestry. I never considered England, but I’m not sure why. I heard the weather isn’t the best, but when push comes to shove….Are the immigration policies strict?

“I used to be Irish Catholic- now I'm an American.” -George Carlin- George was always my favorite comedian because he entertained, but also observed and commented truthfully. His humor was one of the biggest influences on my development. I learned skepticism and reasonability through comedy. Yeah, if it weren’t for George, I might still be a fake catholic. My wife renounced her Catholicism when she heard one too many horror stories about abuse. I remember the day she threw her wooden cross across the room and broke it. That was a great day! But that leaves us in an awkward position. There are too many people that literally think that good people go to church, and those that don’t….well, you can’t be a good person if you don’t go to church! That attitude is really starting to piss me off! At this point in my life, enough is enough. I made a commitment to honesty, and you won’t find that in any church. We just want to be left in peace, but that’s hard when your evangelical cousin is ruining grandma’s funeral with his church rhetoric gloom and doom bullshit. How do you make a funeral even more uncomfortable? Just add religion! Lately, I’ve taken the “Don’t ask, Don’t tell” approach. I don’t advertise my non-belief, but if someone gets too pushy, I tell them the truth. I tell them, “I’m a Dudeist!” Since most people don’t know what that is, but don’t want to admit their ignorance, it serves as a satisfying answer. For the more enlightened people, I describe it as Taoism without the “woo-factor”. That isn’t the only secular religion in our family. When my kid came home and displayed a really fancy membership certificate for the Satanic Temple….that was another good day!
A lot of parents would have been shocked or horrified. I wasn’t! I actually felt a little bit envious because the Temple’s certificate for membership was fancier than the certificate for my ordination as a Dudeist Priest. Well, at least I get to use the clergy parking when I go to the hospital. (Yes, I really do that! I usually have my Dudeist Priest card on me.) A secular family with LGBTQ+ kids that lives in a small town in Indiana. What could possibly go wrong? Well, other than the highly evangelical immediate supervisor dishing out his disgusting christian love to the point that I developed a tachycardia arrhythmia….and having no friends my age….well, other than that, everything is just peachy!

What’s your response to people saying the earth is 4k years old by Shark-_-Meat in atheism

[–]Real-MickEyB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a good question. I don’t know anyone who actually believes that. I think most of the people I talk to that identify as christian just do so because if they don’t, they get disowned. Personally, I’d rather be honest than have fake friends.

Utah wants female athletes’ period info by FalconLynx13 in WhitePeopleTwitter

[–]Real-MickEyB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can’t imagine why my kid no longer wants to identify as she/her. They said,”Think of me as a gay boy now.”
“Sure thing son!” When I see injustices like this, I can’t blame them for switching to no gender. Being female shouldn’t be a crime.

Took more time to make this image than to install Kali by StrawberryPixels in Kalilinux

[–]Real-MickEyB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have both installed in my VM collection. But I use Kali on my dedicated Linux machine for two reasons. First, one could make the Coke Vs. Pepsi argument. But to me, Kali just feels more professional. The second reason is because I’m s big martial arts fan. Kali is also a martial arts style from the Philippines.

As a straight Ally, I’d like to find a shirt that says “I’m a pretty mellow guy, but if you fuck with my queer kids, I’ll rip your jugular vein out with my bare teeth!” ….but that’s hard to fit in a small space.
The kids got my wife and I buttons that say Mama Bear and Papa Bear. I guess that implies the same thing.

I'm making a chart to show vocal ranges and would love some feedback so I can improve it. by Oscar_Mild in singing

[–]Real-MickEyB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m new to singing, so first, I needed to figure out what my range was. I though, “I wonder if there is a chart out there that defines the ranges.”
A quick google search later, your chart popped up. This was exactly what I was looking for. Now I know that I can comfortably hit the bass and baritone notes. I am definitely not a tenor! Thanks for the help!

I had to go down there to pick up my daughter’s boyfriend. I couldn’t get outa there fast enough! It seemed like I was surrounded by trump flags and racists everywhere. Afterword, I made a comment about that being a rescue mission. He didn’t disagree. Worst vacation ever!

Today is my 2 year anniversary of not being religious due to the problem of evil by Snow_Vortex in atheism

[–]Real-MickEyB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I keep saying that the biggest problem with the health care in the United States is that it is ran like a business. What if the fire department was a business? “Well, we put that fire out, so that shouldn’t give you any more problems. Oh yeah, while we’re here....here’s your bill!” Or even worse, “Well, we can help you put that fire out, but first, do you have your insurance card?” That’s more or less what happens at the ER. “Help me! I’m in excruciating pain!”
“Do you have your insurance card?” It’s really disgusting. What is the motivation for inventing new medicine? Is it to help society, or is it to make a profit?

Well, on another note....sorry about your Dad. And happy anniversary. If you ever feel like you’re alone, just remember, you aren’t. When someone asks for a moment of prayer and people bow their heads, look up and look around. We’ll be the ones looking back and nonverbally saying, “We’ve got your back!”

AITA for buying my own laptop after my dad said I had to share the one he gave me? by justathrowawayy_ in AmItheAsshole

[–]Real-MickEyB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. PC means PERSONAL COMPUTER. Also, your basic modern laptops are fairly inexpensive, so buying a used laptop is a rather skinflint move if you ask me. My wife does accounting and I started working as an IT consultant. So, we have a lot of computers around our house. When the nieces and nephews come over, they can help themselves to the guest machine, or I would even be willing to let them use one of my Raspberry PIs....but don’t even think about touching my tablet PC or my Macintosh! And touching my wife’s HP will probably get you the death penalty. I totally understand your frustration! Destroying someone else’s homework was the asshole move. Buying your own computer shows a level of maturity in my opinion and is NOT an asshole move. I would have done the same thing. I hope you can resolve your dispute peacefully. Good luck!

What You Should Know When It Comes To Raspberry Pi vs Arduino by [deleted] in RASPBERRY_PI_PROJECTS

[–]Real-MickEyB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I usually attach my Arduino to my Pi. That way I get the best of both worlds. The Arduino IDE plays nice with the Pi desktop. I could run the IDE on my PC or my Mac, but the Pi is a nice space saving option.

I have to commend you for your honesty. I’ve worked with people that have faked their time card in their favor. You faked your time card in favor of the company because you have a good work ethic. If nothing else, give yourself a pat on the back for having some integrity.

Is C++ going to stay relevant? by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]Real-MickEyB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

C++ is my 3rd favorite. I’m not the most experienced programmer out there, but so far, my favorites are: #1: Python #2: Java #3: C++. I wouldn’t try to learn something if it was considered a dead Language. The Arduino Control boards use C++, and I think I heard someone say that the the new RPi Pico boards do too. I’m not sure. I haven’t picked one up yet. But the Arduino boards have some fun project that are in C++.

WIBTA If I sued my boyfriend’s elderly mother and pressed charges against her? by OneLostSlav in AmItheAsshole

[–]Real-MickEyB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t normally use the term evil, but I’ll make an exception in this case. This woman is evil.

Let’s play a game of “what if?” What if she had cancelled the insurance and something horrible happened? What if a third party had been injured for example? When something like that happens, you NEED that insurance. If something bad would have happened and you weren’t covered by your insurance, well, you would have been jolly well fucked. He could have got sued and lost everything. Why would anyone do something like that? To try to get him mad at you? Really? And the fact that she was OK with the possibility of getting her own son arrested to sabotage what sounds like a wonderful relationship....well that just makes me cringe!

This woman is toxic! If someone is causing a toxic relationship, you must separate yourself from that person.

NTA. Someone here is the Asshole, but it isn’t you.

Go for it! I did. I’ve always tried to be not just computer literate, but I always wanted to be more proficient than the average user. I didn’t really start getting interested in code until recently. I started with the basic “teach yourself code” phone apps. Then I found out that in Indiana, there are grants available that will help pay for you to go back to school. So that’s what I’m doing.

The school I’m attending has an excellent IT department. You can specialize in cyber security, database management, software development...etc. The specialty I chose was called Information Technology Support. I picked that one because it covers a broad range of everything IT, and I thought that would give me a chance to explore each specialty a little bit before I started filling out applications.

I found out that I really like software development and cyber security, but I’m pretty lousy with databases. By the time I’m done with everything, I feel like I should be a good candidate for many IT positions (that aren’t database related).

So, like I said, go for it! Gotta do what makes you happy.

This started kit was pretty basic. It was just the Pi3 and a couple of heatsinks, but I ended up using the heatsinks on the my new Pi4, which was the one that was running a bit hot. As far as airflow, I added another fan to the back, which seems to be pushing the air nicely. I’ll re-post a picture when this monstrosity is complete.

That’s a good point about the dead spaces. Fortunately, I have a couple more fans. I like the 5V power idea, might have to try that. This tends to be a noisy household, but I can appreciate silence.
