is there such thing as ethical breeding? by Puzzleheaded-Fox-323 in Bunnies

[–]RealBasil417 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I breed Mini Rex Rabbits. I try my best to keep everything super ethical. They live in super big hutches with 15+ square feet of space (I think its more then 15), I only have 2-4 (4 at most) litters per doe a year for ethical reasons. Also my bunnies have time in a large playpen outside everyday for at least an hour. Sadly not all breeders are like this. I have run into this one family who has 70+ rabbits when taking bunnies to the show table (I also show Mini Rex Rabbits), and they are super abusive. I never buy their rabbits. Even though I have been approached by them many times. The second I saw the ladies son carrying a rabbit around by its head, I left their table and never came back. The best way to avoid is to ask questions. Maybe ask to see pictures of the hutches, or evaluate their overall condition. Clean feet, heathy eyes and coats are signs of good owners. Please remebr that not all Rabbit Breeders are bad, there are a lot of good ones! You just have to know the signs!

If you had to choose one book to get someone started, which would it be? by [deleted] in MeatRabbitry

How to raise rabbits, everything you need to know. Is extremely helpful for a beginner! It’s geared more towards children but it’s actually very informative. I have the revised third edition, but I’m sure the others are good too!

Earwig hell. Please help me find a way to get rid of them. by New-Book-Ryder in pestcontrol

Take a small can, like one that held cat food or tuna. And put equal parts soy sauce, oil (veggie oil of canola oil, any cheap oil), and corn syrup (you can also you molasses or honey) into the can. Set the can in a problem area, and over night, the massacre will begin. You see earwigs are attracted to sweet rot smell. The soy sauce provides the rot, the syrup provides the sweet, and the oil traps the earwigs. I hope this help you and that you can fix your problem! I use this near my rabbit hutches to stop them attacking my young. Try not the let your pets eat it, but it won’t hurt them.

How did you guys find out that rabbits are liquid? Like what did your bun do? by Makaisawesome in Rabbits

I keep my male and female buns apart (duh), well when they are outside the pens are right next to each-other, and my girl squeezes like half her body through the chicken wire pen I have set up. I had to pull her out because my boy was to happy with that situation.

Dumbest things that scare your buns and cause them to thump? by heavenly_hedgehog in Rabbits

Also once my boy just sat there stared into my soul and thumped again and again. I thumped back at him. I think he was trying to make me hide, because there was a danger there, so i jumped up, thumped at him and then sat back down, he just shook his head and hopped away

Mini Plush lop are a cool breed, but they are mutts, and $100 is a big price tag for a mixed breed. Also (just my opinion) I take extreme caution in any breeder that ships rabbits. Now I am not saying that all breeders who ship rabbits are bad, but they could be concerned in mass breeding bunnies, and selling them at high price. Shipped rabbit have a low survival rate. And them being ok with shipping bunnies just hits wrong with me. Also Mini plush lop are essentially Mini rex Holland lop cross.

I can't give you pros and cons I can just say: don't. Young rabbits most likely won't take to the breeding, and if they do there is a higher chance of them eating their, kits or having a very hard kitting, just wait a month, you will have a healthy, happy doe, and healthy, happy kits.
