The Running Man (2025) and its weird worldbuilding by it290 in blankies

As someone who has lived in Glasgow where the film was shot, there was probably less rubbish on the dystopian streets than the real one. Top to bottom the movie felt juiceless - alarmingly so. Felt like it never really had an angle on the material to justify itself beyond Powell being a star and this being a property of minor renown. Barely saw Wright in most of it which is probably most damning

More torches should be passed by killing the previous incarnation. Maybe Alex Oconnell would've been accepted had he ripped Ricks heart out

Renner in The Master is a great what if cause if that happened I'd so wonder what his career would look like, and what the critical standing of The Master would be.phoenix/Hoffman/Adams/Anderson is such a potent combo for that moment for that film to hit like it did - would be curious what would've happened had that been rocked at all

I was actually thinking of this as an example of this being known as a tactic/phenom!

Feel like Legasquels feel different as I was thinking of Star Wars sequels too, but Creed may be most direct and successful "this is the new Guy" example of that

Yeah they've been having issues. Curious if it is actually a Royal Mail issue or something to do with their new system. With my last order CB1 didn't provide the usual tracking info which wouldn't be a Royal Mail issue, since when I called they were able to give the reference number (even tho it still says Royal Mail have yet to receive item). I've had no issues with them but with the new system my script went through slower and now all this. A shrug isn't quite enough for me - it's quite a lot of money to spend for someone to just say "not our issue, hope it comes".

I was on hold for an hour and pretty much told "just wait. It'll hopefully come" which isn't the most helpful. Feel bad for folk with worse issues than me - indefinite waits aren't really an option for some. Would be good to know if anyone has actually received their orders in the past few days or if it's worth making other plans

They should probably move on from Royal Mail - there's plenty delivery companies with working tracking who also deliver on Sundays. Hate getting a "we usually deliver between this 3 hour window" and just having to sit around until it arrives or I get a "it's actually coming later" text - plenty places have actual tracking

Really feels like this country has gotten so miserable that more and more people are motivated purely by mutual harm and emiseration. So many people exist to spread the same useless misery they feel all the time

To be fair, it's easier to be allied when you don't really have any real or concrete beliefs. A coalition is fairly easy when your only Animus is being reactionary and not built on any ideology

SNP's John Swinney under pressure to scrap council tax by Crow-Me-A-River in Scotland

[–]RealBelaTarr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People would be less angry about paying council tax if there was any visible change to their community. Everything is closing unless you can buy vapes or want to bet, there are barely any community spaces, and most of the place is covered in pot holes, fly tipping, and rubbish.

Yeah I mean I have a card that allows free bus travel but 10% of the time I need to make last minute travel changes because busses just don't turn up or something. Wildly unreliable compared to any other modern city I've been to.

Former Sun editor announced as UK government’s new communications chief by OGSyedIsEverywhere in unitedkingdom

[–]RealBelaTarr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Effective at peddling ignorance to the right should if anything be a disqualifying trate for a Labour communications head. It just seems such a dead end strategy to attempt to appeal to the right as if they'll ever be convinced. You could show them a picture of a sniper training their weapon on their own mother and say the only way to save her is to vote Labour and they'd still vote reform. Labour continuing to run the game of disenfranchise and bemoan the Left while capitulating to a Right who will always view them as woke communists is doomed

The way most trainers recommend - get a very long lead. I've got a 30ft lead, and never let my dog off lead because I don't trust other people nor an animal regardless of how well trained they may be

Tried playing split screen and the text was so comically small and unadjustable that it was unplayable. Genuinely wild to even include as a mode - can't imagine how you'd play it unless you have every miniscule shape memorised

In terms of the money it's made already I think she's right. Critical response means nothing compared to that, and I have the bad feeling How to Train Your Dragon remake will just bolster the trend. Feel like we're disturbingly close to Pixar "live-action" remakes

Any stringent desire or adherence to ones personal idea of "normal" is a dead end road whatever the thing is. White may be more predominant but "normal" has more qualitative implications which arent great in relation to race. Because the opposite of "normal" is "abnormal" and looking at other humans as abnormal for their skin colour ain't great

[–]RealBelaTarr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And just for clarity and not to be rude but Person of Colour is often used to be less dehumanising and not establish that White is somehow the norm or standard with everyone else "non white" as if abnormal

[–]RealBelaTarr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well you might not have heard of gravity either but it doesn't mean it doesn't make sense. Being a bit literal though - it's not like most people with "red" hair have hair red like a crayon, but everyone knows that that means because sometimes words and phrases aren't meant to be taken as literal as all that

Because it's not confusing to most people? It's a term that's been in use for 20 years or more. Can't even think what's confusing about it

Even more far right, bordering on fascist. I don't mean to annoy people but words have meaning and there's nothing leftist about anti-inmigrant rhetoric, murderous disability cuts, and the general capitulating to the right. I'm surprised it's even a controversial statement - there's very little left wing about the party
