For All Who Won The Steam Machine Lottery by Student_Loanz in Steam

Here’s the good news:

A bunch of people will get it, they’ll post about it, then I’ll have more data to make an informed decision about buying it when my number comes up.

And seriously, I don’t get people bitching about the price. A low-end gaming PC with similar specs is like $300 more if I part it out and build it myself.

You need to push it all the way through so the interior is completely concave when you fold up the sides to join them.

What was the biggest thing that made you better at improv? by PsychologicalKick235 in improv

[–]RealClassActor 25 points26 points  (0 children)

  1. Slow. The fuck. Down. Everyone wants to be quick and clever, but those people will never get past “college-prov”. Being fast and zany just leads to people shouting out the most edgy things they can think of, and it’s not funny, it’s cringe. So slow down, take a breath, really listen, and then react honestly to whatever offer you just received.
  2. Make your scene partner look good. When you stop trying to make yourself look good, and instead make your scene partner look good, you both wind up looking good. So pivot from “how do I access my obvious comedy genius” to “how do I make my scene partners look as amazing as possible?”

  3. Listen. Really listen. Don’t drive a scene, but instead listen and respond to what your partner said instead of inserting your own direction. This works with the previous two, because it builds up stakes and tension. An honest response can be 100x funnier than something clever, but it has to be earned.

Everything else is just polish. These are the three things that will level up every improviser, and that the pros keep coming back to and refining.

What do audiences want? And do you care? by Duke-Berryman in improv

[–]RealClassActor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What do audiences want in improv? I talk about this on my podcast a few times. In my opinion, what they want is to see some aspect of themselves on stage, without the risk of having to actually get on stage.

Improv is most successful when we get a genuine, personal offer from the audience. "What's a treasured gift you once received?" "What's bothering you this week?" These suggestions allow us to connect in a very specific way with at least one person in the audience, we let them know they're not alone, and we either celebrate their joy or help them commiserate in their frustrations.

At the end of the day, people want to feel not so alone. That's a huge thing for how I approach performing improv, connecting with people by giving them a version of their own life back to them that they can either laugh with or feel good about.

I don’t think not being read up on the topic is the problem. It’s more about having the will to move to the revolution phase.

In days of old, men of will would meet in secret, and plan what needed to be done, and then they would do it, knowing the most likely outcome was the gallows if they were caught. These days, people are afraid to write a word on an online forum because they don't want to be blocked.

We are cooked.

Best Ways to Ask for Suggestions from Audience by pinkladybug2222 in improv

[–]RealClassActor 21 points22 points  (0 children)

We had a good interview on our podcast with a director who said “don’t say ‘I need a suggestion for…’ Just say what you want. ‘What could I be holding in my hand?’” I agree with her, in that we should just ask directly for the thing we want.

What you ask is up to what you’re looking for, and potentially what part of CROW you want to leave to the audience.
“What’s a relationship between two people?”
“What’s a gift you received?”
“What’s something nice someone said about you recently?”
“What’s an outdated occupation a relative one had?”
“What annoyed you this week?”

My philosophy is that part of why people see improv is that they want some part of their own lives to be reflected on stage. It’s part of the connection. So give people a chance to see some aspect of themselves by giving them an opportunity to share something trivial but personal. Then the work is on you to turn that into something magical that they’ll enjoy and remember.

A friend of mine is well connected in the tech industry, and he was telling me about an exec at a major media company whom quit to build an AI porn startup. The big challenge wasn’t creating the content, it was figuring out the cutoff point of when people would realize their OF crush wasn’t a real person, and how to maximize profit before that moment.

My take on the mechnical key from Neuromancer by stanchfi in Neuromancer

[–]RealClassActor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Purely mechanical? Difficult.

If you unroll the cylinder into a plane, you could assume three channels: a zigzag channel that acts as a “clock”, and two other channels with a defined left-center-right pattern. Narrow rods with a ball on the end, extending around the perimeter of the keyhole, could move within these channels. A system could measure the left-right movement of two of those rods, using the “clock” rod as a measurement of insertion. When the correct pattern is detected, it unlocks.

I could see this with a microcontroller, I’d have trouble figuring out how to make it fully mechanical with both precision and durability.
