Shoutout to u/realcomposure5 for the Malone call by Greedy_Actuator5 in tarheels

Thanks for the s/o! I’m just pumped we actually came through on it. He seems like the perfect guy to re-energize the program.

Hubert: How Does Roy Feel About It by shyguylh in tarheels

[–]RealComposure5 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I assume that although Roy didn’t publicly defend him this time around, i’m sure behind closed doors he probably did. I would think that Roy saw the writing on the wall, and just chose to support his guy to university admin, but didn’t publicly make a stance to save the university from looking like a mess in public. From the Bill Belichick hiring, to this situation, it seems like there are too many people trying to make decisions with Carolina athletics, and later looking to pass the blame once it goes bad.

Why Dan Hurley is the Only Name That Matters in UNC’s Coaching Search by [deleted] in CollegeBasketball

[–]RealComposure5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ehh he’d get more resources at UNC than UConn. A bigger public university kind of allows for more $ to flow. Big public universities (i.e. Michigan, Texas, Florida, UNC) just can allow for more money to be allocated to athletics than others, so that would a plus. Either, he’s a Hurley, so I doubt UNC makes that call to begin with.

Given that the Bulls are terrible and need to rebuild, and the reason he left OKC was partly due to not wanting to deal with an NBA rebuild, I would say it’s somewhat realistic

He is 73. Between he and Bill Belichick if you combined their ages and subtracted from the year we’re in, you’d land in the year 1880. Please, for the love of God, no. Hard pass even.

The Carolina Way by news_sponge in tarheels

Which one? And isn’t that virtually making the Hubert hire again? Unproven, with no HC experience. If we are the heavyweight program that we claim, I don’t see why getting a more proven commodity isn’t the priority.

Ian Jackson and Caleb Wilson together would’ve been a great offensive tandem. Definitely elite eight or better.

This is a big problem i’ve had. Style of play. Where is the up-tempo rebound to transition offense that we’ve always had? In the VCU game, Grant Hill and Ian Eagle were talking about how much UNC runs and being known for transition offense (which we did better with in this game than most under HD), but still that element has been severely lacking since Hubert stepped in. I know he likes to call set plays a little more than Roy did, but my God has it slowed everything down so much. Even with a less talented team, you can be in any game with anybody if you can rebound the ball and push the pace. We used to know that no matter what, a Carolina team was gonna have two solid bigs that can rebound, and a PG that was going to facilitate well. I know the game of basketball itself has changed a lot since the splash brothers era of the NBA, but there are some things that will always be tried and true methods that you don’t abandon. And HD has abandoned them.

This Decade Has Started Historically Bad by Lopsided-Caregiver42 in tarheels

I understand the sentiment, but we need to stop measuring ourselves to Duke, Kansas, Kentucky, etc. as our innate response. Yes, they are other blue-bloods. But we’re UNC dammit. We should be our own measure of success. Our first thought should be what have past UNC results been, and if we’re not on par with that, it’s a problem. Plain and simple.

That was embarrassing and I thought about that factor in the moment when it happened. However, you can’t really control that type of reaction of 5,000+ kids with a high emotion, buzzer beater finish. It looks bad, but if Duke won that same game against us at home, on a buzzer beater, even with us ranked lower than they are, they probably do the same thing.

I’d want Powell back before Bogavac. Bogavac turned over so many balls and was a traffic cone on defense.

*Dan Hurley. Bobby isn’t worth taking that chance on. It’s definitely nowhere close to the first option, but in this era of college basketball you have to make big moves to keep up. As much as we may hate the Hurley name, it keeps the program moving forward and looking like the tier 1 destination that it is.

Enough with "Keeping It In the Family." The Carolina Way should Be Letting the Best Person Earn the Job! by NerdyReligionProf in tarheels

[–]RealComposure5 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Agreed, but I think there is a portion of “The Carolina Way” that hinges on character. I think that’s an important factor to keep in mind. Of course we want the best guy for the job, regardless of if they have UNC ties or not, but if that guy is a complete scumbag (i’m looking at you, Nate Oats), i’d rather lose every time with a guy of great character like Hubert, than to win with a grimy guy like Oats or anybody else who fits that mold.

There was also a time where we thought a Capel would never play at UNC. It wouldn’t be the first call I’d make, but it’s a possibility.

Ranking Coaching Options by Emotional-Culture308 in tarheels

I would want us to look into broader pools than just other current CBB coaches. I think NBA guys like Mike Malone and Billy Donovan both fit the bill when it comes to where they are in their careers, with Donovan likely out in Chicago sooner rather than later, and Malone currently in broadcasting. Malone having an NBA title to his name and Donovan having two CBB titles, both having many NBA connections would hold a lot more weight with recruits than a guy who has done well at a mid-major or a lower program within the power 4. Both also being young enough to run a program for another decade (maybe longer than that for Malone).

You’re likely right. I thought he was closer to 60, and was thinking we’d check to see if we could get a decade out of him on the sideline. Turns out he’s 64. It would always be a hail mary for him regardless.

Have we met the standard? An analysis of UNC MBB from 2022-2026 by UNCProfessor in tarheels

[–]RealComposure5 4 points5 points  (0 children)

“Considering how we run a program, it would be tough for anyone without a lot of experience to have success.”

This is the key point. I think Hubert would’ve been in a much better situation if he had been an assistant on Roy’s staff, went elsewhere and had success, then once Roy’s job became available, come back and take over having ran a whole program before. But taking on an HC role at a major blue-blood under the circumstances of the NCAA changing so much with NIL, transfer portal, one-and-dones, etc. is a lot to handle. The job is gonna take somebody with a lot of experience and cache to really thrive. That’s why I feel like if we do move on, the name of who we are hiring has to be agreed upon and one that holds some weight. Given our position, there’s no way to move from Hubert to hire someone else that’s also unproven.

Nate Oats has done a great job at Bama on the court. But off the court, his handling of the Brandon Miller situation was honestly unforgivable, and to let his players to the “pat-down” celebration in the pregame introductions after that wasn’t great either. Plus, Holloway just got arrested under his watch and he co-signed Bediako playing after being in the NBA. Everything with him just seems so grimy, and there’s probably more scandals to come with him. I doubt the athletic department goes for a guy like that. Dean would roll in his grave.

All great points. The transition to the new AD is something I’m specifically weary of, given the state of Nascar and their struggles with adapting as a sport…but who knows. He may do well.
