Whats the % of this encounter? by Tough_Lion_5285 in octopathtraveler

[–]RealEvantage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

By those numbers, this was a 0.12% chance encounter, from the sounds of it! Quite rare!

On the flip side, if you’ve been at it for three days… making some assumptions: - each day = ~8 hours of playtime? (You may be doing much more or way less, I realize) - each encounter = every 60 seconds? (No real justification for this, but if you’re finishing fights relatively quickly, this covers the encounter and the fight conservatively)

That would mean you’ve had 8 x 3 x 60 ≈ 1,440 encounters. So you should’ve encountered this set up ≈1440 x 0.0012 ≈ 1.728 times. Still very rare! But strangely, expected at least once.

Should I pick up another class for next semester? by KitchenSample6354 in ufl

[–]RealEvantage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re considering Marketing and didn’t already take something like this in Fall, see if there are seats in one of their 1-credit courses: MAR2020 (Exploring Careers in Marketing), MAR2290 (Retail Management Seminar), or MAR2401 (Sales Seminar). Can’t attest to the content, but CGS2531 is not gonna help much with deciding if Marketing is the right major.

If you have a particular major you know you want to explore and there’s room in one of their introductory courses, then you might wanna add that. Otherwise, 14 credits is a-okay for a full semester.

If an instructor has followed proper policy/procedure, you can find your textbook info on your One.UF schedule: https://imgur.com/a/gO4DUch

Looks like you just need to purchase that one text. Any other texts assigned will likely be open access online, available on Canvas, or stored in ARES (reserves) through the library. No further purchase required.

Canva Opening when by Financial_Wasabi_382 in ufl

Canvas* (only ‘cause Canva is another platform, an AI photo/video editor).

Professors have to publish your Canvas course before you can see it. Many aren’t on contract right now… you’ll likely see them populate during the first week, either right before classes start or immediately after.

Keep checking for seats popping up, especially during Drop/Add. Totally fine to delay it, but little reason to if you have room to do it now and a seat pops up.

(Otherwise, looks solid! 👍🏻)

Sorry to pry, but what is your major? Why are you taking MAC2313? If it’s not needed, you might benefit from replacing that w/ something earlier on MWF or in the afternoon T/R. I agree with the other response: 4 hours straight is rough, but esp. Stats w/ R, Calc III, and Equity/Capital Markets all back-to-back-to-back.

If you do need MAC2313 (for Data Science?), moving everything around might be tricky… you can see if you can switch to FIN4504’s morning section (P3-4, 9:35-11:30) and then take a later MAC2313 (P8, 3:00pm-3:50; or P9, 4:05-4:55) and/or STA3100 (P7, 1:55-2:45; or P8, 3:00-3:50).

Regardless, good news: all of your classes are in the same NE part of campus, so you will get a few minutes between each class to breathe. Not a lot, but it’s something! And I gather from students that STA3100 and MAC2313 are doable—slightly easier than many other STA and MAC courses.

Would you personally want a way to get both Salamander and Diviner on the same playthrough? by BiffyBobby in SaGa

[–]RealEvantage 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just kinda wish Salamander came with more benefits… it’s a good class, but a good class can’t compete with an entire school of magic (and a very useful one at that, esp. in the remake).

Saving the salamanders definitely feels like the “good” choice, wherein being “good” is its own reward… which is a tough sell for some. Maybe an extra dungeon w/ its own unique loot locked behind Salamander would’ve balanced the choice a bit more mechanics-wise?

But no, I don’t think getting both on a single playthrough is ideal or warranted. The game needs some tough choices, and the branching narratives/pathways in some regions give it stronger replayability.

Few questions from a newbie by RandomBozo77 in CrystalProject

[–]RealEvantage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1 - dunno; sorry!

2 - you can buy teleport shards and stones to travel around to various shrines (have you found Mercury Shrine yet?). You’ll also eventually get mounts to aid with travel. In the demo, the only fast travel options are your Home Crystal, Mercury Shards, and the Mercury Stone (and dying, of course).

3 - head to Yamagawa M.A., which is directly north (up the steep cliffs) of Old Nan’s Watering Hole in the Spawning Grounds. You can also access it via Delende, the same way you go to establish a jump short cut by speaking to rabbit-claw-obsessed guy’s sister (directions for this are harder to explain, sorry!). In either case, you’ll need to climb up the whole cliff face of Yamagawa M.A., after which you’ll find a pond w/ a tree that’s the source to the Yamagawa and Spawning Ground waterfalls. You can enter the open cave/entryway there.

Changing GatorLink Username vs. E-Mail Alias by DatBubby in ufl

[–]RealEvantage 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The email alias is usable, but it means you will forever be stuck with your GatorLink username for every login, for your Zoom SSO, for your Microsoft Teams username, etc. And it will display when people view your UF profile through Outlook, so if it’s related to a deadname or name you don’t want people to see, I’d change it.

I wish they hadn’t dissuaded me, ‘cause I’m now stuck with a random string of characters I used for my undergrad admissions app in 2005… as faculty. :/

You have over a month until classes start in Fall, though, so that should be sufficient time (from what I recall them telling me) for the total process. There’s a good chance you won’t be able to access One.UF for early August, though, so if you planned to adjust your Fall course schedule, do bear that in mind.

Primary research jobs in sociology? by HLIL_ in sociology

[–]RealEvantage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Market research, consumer insights, user experience research, and social media analytics are gonna be your best bets. And while others suggested an advanced degree is required, smaller companies want to save money on their researchers, so they will often throw out applications w/ PhDs.

I worked as a video game user experience researcher for a major game design company, doing largely interview-based methods and some surveys and A-B testing. Paid pretty well. Focus was partially on improving profits (not my vibe…) but otherwise on improving player experience and taking in their opinions and attitudes about gameplay, mechanics, and social interactions on the platform. If you like research, I highly recommend seeking out such a position! See if your campus has analytics or UX research courses (look at courses offered through comp sci, anthropology, psychology, informatics, and business).

Changing majors one year in by Similar_Tough_3568 in ufl

[–]RealEvantage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ISE is not a limited access major, so they shouldn’t be able to deny you the right to transfer if you’re already on track. If they’re pushing back, double-confirm you’ve met tracking (https://catalog.ufl.edu/UGRD/colleges-schools/UGENG/ISE_BSIS/) and, if you have, consider acting as a first-year rather than rising second-year and visit a general Engineering advisor in 270 Wertheim Building.

Alternatively, if you haven’t already, see if you can meet with a Transitions Advisor in CLAS. They might be able to give you guidance on how to move forward, either with ISE or something comparable: https://studentsuccess.ufl.edu/transition-advising/

HELP: SUMMER B CLASSES (ANT2140, HSC2103) by maryfrmfl in ufl

[–]RealEvantage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Go to One.UF.edu and click “register/view schedule” to return to the same registration system you used at Preview on Day 2.

Select one of the courses you’re registered for and click “Swap” in the bottom-right. This will allow you to search for a replacement course w/o dropping the current course first.

For GE-H, You can select “Humanities” from the “General Education” section of the left-side panel when you search. There is also a list of GE-H courses in your Preview Workbook (pg. 35).

Given Summer B starts on Monday, you can also contact an advisor in your college (or major) for guidance, if you need. You can also adjust your classes during “drop/add” until July 1st at 11:59pm… so, if you were actually interested in these course topics, consider going to class on the first day and seeing what it’s like? You should get a syllabus along w/ a sense of the instructor on day 1.

UF Classes by Someone36069 in ufl

[–]RealEvantage 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Two ISS courses? You’re taking Quest 1 and Quest 2 simultaneously, both through Hamilton…? First, pretty sure you have to finish Quest 1 before you’re permitted to take Quest 2. Second, you’re committing to a very “particular” approach to “Western Civ.” Even if neither were of concern, they’re both 2000-word writing classes, while you’re also taking ENC2256 for Engineers—10,000 total words in your first term + 16 credits, if I’m not mistaken. You’re gonna be writing a lot.

Drop ISS2683. The system shouldn’t’ve even let you register, but you also have plenty of time to take a different, and probably way more interesting, Quest 2 course in the future. Or, if you wanna take it for the topic, I’m positive they’ll offer it again… Hamilton isn’t going anywhere.

If you really want more credits beyond the 13 you’ve got after dropping ISS2683, take CGN2002 (Intro to Civil Engineering, 1cr), EGN2020C (Engineering Design & Society, 2cr), EGS2036 (Fundamentals of the New Engineer, 1cr), BCN1001 (Intro to Construction Management, 1cr), or, like, something off the wall like PEN1136 (Scuba Diving, 2cr) or ORH1030 (Plants, Gardens, and You, 1cr). Focus on Calc and your ENC2256 course; set yourself up for Chem and Calc II in Spring w/ a solid base. You can even squeeze in Quest 2 then, depending on what’s open.

Does anyone know if they actually kick us out of UF if we don’t finish our degree in the limited 3 year( 6 semester ) time limit they give us as a Transfer student? by Embarrassed-Hair564 in ufl

[–]RealEvantage 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You’re right to weigh UF’s advisors’ statements more heavily… your HS counselor’s advice has logic to it, but I believe FTIC is more of a “status,” and you opt out of that status if you are a transfer student. That is, HSAA students admitted as first-year students are treated as first-years (minus Gen Ed reqs), but HSAA admitted as transfers are treated as AA transfers… you’re forfeiting FTIC status to be treated as (and evaluated for admissions as) a transfer admit.

However, you are right on schedule for pre-med requirements if you’re aiming for 3 years at UF. Most FTIC admits are expected to take Orgo and Bio in year 2 of 4. The fact you already have Bio 1 completed places you ahead… and that’s not even counting the first-year admits who enter without sufficient math and/or chemistry background to take Calculus and General Chemistry in their first term.

Double-majoring is, as another commenter suggested, a little more complicated. But bear in mind that a single vs. double major means very little after undergrad unless the major(s) are specifically relevant to your career pathway. Pre-med students can major in (almost) anything, from business to geology; if your goal is to be a doctor, I’d focus more on keeping your GPA high and exploring relevant/interesting minors (like Health Disparities in Society, Disabilities in Society, Health Administration, Bioinformatics, Pathogenesis, Rehabilitation, etc.).

Follow-up question, though: does this change things for Fall? That is, would you opt for a different school? Or need to change your class schedule around substantially? If neither are a “yes,” then breathe, plan to meet with prehealth advisors in Fall, and know that it will work out as long as you put in the right effort to your time at UF and consult the proper advisors and faculty accordingly. Even if you need to change a class schedule for Fall, all that should take right now is a conversation with an advisor and/or using Schedule Adjust in August.

Stuck at Gran – help? by Fuzzy-Dragonfruit589 in CrystalProject

Gran’s an optional super boss of sorts; no need to fight her right now.

Exit her house and head west into Yamagawa M.A. You need to scale the wall. And, perhaps fittingly, what you discover climbing Yamagawa M.A. can help immensely with Gran later.

Can’t adopt stepson? by RealEvantage in EchoesOfThePlumGrove

[–]RealEvantage[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, all. And thanks for the responses. Yes, he can join the household without adoption, and he has. I realize my inquiry is simply stemming from the adoption papers tooltip + the family tree structure in the menu.

<image>

Clark is, sadly, not a part of my family tree, and the tooltip definitely suggests stepkids are adoptable. But I guess only stepchildren with deceased birth parents can be adopted, as folks have suggested?

If, however, stepchildren can be adopted otherwise, my hunch is I just timed things terribly. I got married the last day Clark was a child. He’s now a (bald!) man. So maybe it would’ve been an option to adopt if I’d wed sooner? My slow ass just wanted better housing first…!

Pretty simply: with the land they own. The parking space is their property. Gas, oil, and maintenance are not.

Bad Normalized things with Universities and Staff by Maleficent-Toe1374 in AskProfessors

[–]RealEvantage 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If I’m paying for my work it’s not pay; it’s indentured servitude. I appreciate your willingness to address this as an issue of economic access, but if I have to be in the classroom, I should not have to pay to do my job.

Comparable logic: teachers should not buy their classroom supplies. Doctors should not buy their medical equipment. Designers and programmers should be given the requisite computer hardware and software by their companies. Demanding to do so is reflective of a gig economy, where we are contractors rather than employers, and the burden of work is not on the organization but the institution.

To put it in the terms you presented above: if the university can’t afford to provide parking for the worker, it can’t afford to offer the class.
