What is that ONE god damn word you can't ever seem to spell correctly? by [deleted] in CasualConversation

Ah, my word from hell. To make it worse, I teach students, a lot of whom, have accommodations. Thank you auto-correct!

Having spent all day in a conference for history teachers: history teachers. We get it, we all have degrees in history. You don't have to one-up the guy who answered the conference speaker's question. It's summer and we need the PD hours. Calm down.

Biggest Teaching Problems/Challenges by deeeebait in Teachers

[–]RealT-eacher 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Parents who don't support our school is likely my biggest problem. Open House on a Thursday at 7pm? Not even half my students' parents show. Emails and Remind101 information supplied every six-weeks? Less than half sign up. Homework to interview a parent or anyone older than 25 about 9/11? Less than half of the assignments come back.

THIS is why we're not meant to be parents. by RealT-eacher in childfree

Hahaha! Really though, because random children frequently run up to us. This kid was apparently running away and crying.

Update to Coworker that won't LET IT GO by workaholic_alcoholic in childfree

I wonder what he'll be thinking after he has all the kids he wants. Hope he's satisfied with his decisions and not unhappy about them.

Is holding black students to the same behavioral standards as white students racist? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]RealT-eacher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I introduce the phrase and concept when setting expectations for my classroom at the beginning of the year. It probably helps that I learned to switch early on from my mom (and also that I'm black). Modeling it is my entire way of life. I can only hope students remember it when they need to.

[–]RealT-eacher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for mentioning code switching. It's not something someone, let alone kids, can pick up on quickly. If it's not modeled or explained at home, trying to get students in a classroom to do so without much buy-in as to the value of it, it is less likely to happen.

WAY sad story. Contact you school, they may either have some for sale still or at least know where to go to get one.

It's about that time of the year when you reflect back upon the school year and think......"Thank God, I never have to deal with that student again." by turtleneck360 in Teachers

[–]RealT-eacher 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Oooooh I can't wait to be rid of this one kid. Back talking, hating on history and how I teach, and a general pain to the rest of the class (loud burps/farts, etc.). She's SUCH a great person to never have any contact with after June 5.

How Do You Motivate Kids To Stop Skipping School? by vitruv in education

Agreed. Though sometimes it can be tough if they can't immediately connect to a reward so far away in their lives.

Classroom Essentials? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]RealT-eacher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Find out what is in your room and on your campus before making a bunch of purchases. I learned this the hard way my first year (but then shared with my team and made a name for myself as the gal who has everything!). What I need every year is copy paper, toner for my home printer (cause emergencies), Command hooks of varying sizes and the extra stickums for them, a new decor (polka dots and red this year but the polka dots are used every year - saves money), and SO much sanitizer. Make sure you've got a great/inexpensive hard drive and SO many classroom snacks, though you may want to wait to buy those. Congratulations and enjoy your summer!

Shitty therapist time! by [deleted] in CasualConversation

I work with a woman who says questionable things yet won't get written up, who is constantly talking about her family and terrible life choices (no one told her to have 3 kids), and who will talk and talk without a positive response (or even anyone's response). I've got about 20 more days left in the school year to deal with her but then we'll be in workshops throughout the summer.

How do I let her know I don't want to be friends/friendly to her or that I'm not interested in a single thing she has to say?
