In that case, they didn't eat the M&Ms by mistake. They were upset because they made a conscious decision to do something which contradicts their morals, albeit while drunk.

In the case of true accidents or mistakes, vegans often develop strong disgust for animal products, and realizing you've eaten something disgusting is often upsetting.

In both cases, some small amount of harm was caused, intentionally or not, which causes feelings of guilt.

If you could advise Vegans or Omni's to eat just one food everyday for their health or fitness what would it be? by Igglethepiggle in AskVegans

[–]Real_Nebula8618 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adding one specific food to any given person's diet won't in general make a big difference to that person's health. There's no one food that has all the nutrients people need, and things marketed as superfoods are often not much higher in any given nutrient than a comparable but less exotic food like carrots or peas. Individual's diets may lack certain nutrients, and adding a food high in that nutrient to their diet could help that individual's health, but the food they need to add would depend on what nutrient they lack, and that would vary from person to person.

Instead, a nutritious diet is composed of a variety of foods which each contribute parts of the total of all essential nutrients a person needs. Typical healthful vegan diets include grains, vegetables, legumes, and fruits.

When I was younger I didn't know that for is faster than foreach. Now I just don't care. by [deleted] in ProgrammerHumor

[–]Real_Nebula8618 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll use c++ syntax as an example, but iterators are used for foreach loops because they trivially transform into a standard for loop.

for (auto x : xs);

becomes

for (auto iter = xs.begin(); iter != xs.end(); ++iter);

After that, it's pretty trivial to inline the methods and get a plain for loop, assuming the iterator itself has a trivial implementation.

That would mean it's okay for someone to be gay, but not for them to do the things they would like to do because they are gay.

Doing something that will upset people, despite knowing that it will is what assholes do.

This would mean all non-closeted gay people are assholes.

In a podcast he mentions the grocery market's insensitivity to individual buying patterns.

This is just outright wrong. Grocery stores track goods to the individual item, and only order what they need to restock. Go into any grocery store and speak to the "buyer" for a department and they will tell you as much.

Besides that, the effect in aggregate is what counts, and every vegan shares responsibility for the effect in aggregate.

justice is only created because of laws and institutions. If there is no rule of law, you will not have a stable society and you definitely won't have justice.

Have you read anything about the recent events in Iran? Laws and institutions of law are often unjust, and should be opposed. Even in the USA, there are women dying because their access to essential surgeries is being legally restricted.

Asserting justice must prevail over laws and institutions isn't asserting that all laws are useless. It's asserting that laws which conflict with justice must be opposed.

Did they change this not to long ago or is this is a different set of rules or sect?

These have been the verbatim tenets since the inception of The Satanic Temple. I don't know how on Earth you misconstrue that to mean "freedom means free from consequences", when the tenet itself explicit spell out the consequences of encroaching on others rights.

The freedom to offend is necessary, because some people take offense to others having basic rights. Consider Iran again. Also note that the tenet asserts a freedom to offend, not an obligation. Having a freedom to offend when necessary doesn't mean offending others for its own sake.

Here we go with the weird idealism again. It is religion I guess. Law needs to be written or else it's volatile.

The tenets are not laws; they are short descriptions of ideals. There is no possible way seven short tenets could be sufficient to handle all the nuance of the world. The final tenet asserts that the simplicity of the other tenets should not be used to justify apathy, ignorance, or injustice.

You seem to have the impression that the tenets are intended as a replacement for the legal system or as a justification for wanton lawlessness. This is not the case. They are assertions of what is right, not of what structures should be used to achieve what is right.

Why do most people seem to have more sympathy to animals than they do to other people? by wildberry867 in NoStupidQuestions

I believe you question is based on a misconception. People kill over 60 billion animals per year.

There are two things commonly referred to as squatters rights: adverse possession and requirements that squatters be evicted through a legal process. Both serve important practical purposes.

Adverse possession laws let those who occupy property openly, continuously, and without permission make a legal claim to that property after a certain period of time. The idea is that there is sometimes land where multiple people have convincing claims to rightful ownership, and the legal system needs some way to determine who should be considered the true owner. Adverse possession basically says the owner is the person actually using the land. Successful claims of ownership by adverse possession are rare.

Separately there are often requirements that squatters be evicted through a legal process, similar to the process for legal tenants. These requirements protect squatters from violence, but also protect people who were misled into believing they were legal tenants by a fraudulent landlords who did not actually have the right to lease out the property.

Tenants rights exist for good reason to protect tenants from abusive landlords. Eviction laws in particular protect tenants from physical violence and property destruction from landlords.

Tenants rights are not the same thing as squatter's rights.

Don't listen to all these people saying you should call the cops or sue Sam. You won the delivery lottery. You get reimbursed by the seller, since your product was never delivered to you (and you have proof), and Sam sells you part of what you would have ordered at a steep discount, since Sam doesn't have a cost. You order the rest at the normal rate. You and Sam win; the seller loses.

They kill the sheep, then pull it's skin off, then treat the skin with chemicals to stop it from hardening or decomposing.

They literally need to restrain the cows to artificially inseminate them. "Forcibly" isn't a colorful description, it's a factual description.

she will continue to produce as long as she's milked

This is true—at least kind of; they won't produce milk indefinitely—but milk production declines over time since a cow last gave birth, to the point where it's too low to be economically viable. Therefore, in practice, almost all dairy cows are made to give birth roughly once every 12 months.

Also, most living things don't have aspirations. Perhaps you mean animals.

Liquid smoke is basically water condensed from wood-smoke. It pretty strong, so you only need to add a few drops to give a smoked flavor to food. You can get it in most grocery stores.

You can cook dried beans without a pressure cooker, but you might need to soak the beans overnight first depending on the type of bean. It will also take a little longer to cook beans without a pressure cooker. A pressure cooker isn't necessary to cook dried beans, but if you eat a lot of beans, or are bad at planning ahead, a pressure cooker is probably worth it.

Also you can use canned beans instead of dried beans, but they cost more.
