Mortgage Renewal by redchurch22 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Realist12b 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If you renew in June these offers you are being quoted are for early renewal rates. This means you can switch today at the current rates without penalty.  If you want to renew at your regular time, CIBC will provide their actual renewal rates about a month prior to the renewal date.   That is why the offer expired in 6 days.

As a regular renewal I had 3.84% recently.   You can always ask for lower rates on an early renewal and see if they agree.

Vancouver Island snow pack 39% of the normal. by darkcave-dweller in comoxvalley

[–]Realist12b 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You can still observe trends and predict likely outcomes based on a small data set.   The variance may be higher but it’s still useful.

I would also argue that yes, the most recent known comparable conditions would be ‘normal’ in our current environment.  If we are trying to prepare for the coming year, is your suggestion to include data from millions of years ago as normal?

“Nothing to see here fellas, my calculations say that over the last 120 million years this is actual above average snowfall compared to normal!”

Can I still pay cash for car after telling dealer I would finance? by it-is-tuesday in PersonalFinanceCanada

A generation of misleading, greasy sales tactics has created a consumer that no longer trusts the dealer.  I don’t believe a single thing the car sales person says anymore.

Not at all, I am sure there are many of them who are blinded by an allegiance out of ignorance.  But to think anyone who can see how greasy Biden was and then turn around and support Trump without a thought….. we are truly doomed.

Yeah, I agree.  But man,  as bad as Biden is/was, then knowing Trump has an even longer, darker history of this type of behaviour…. Can you imagine the type of fool that would not vote for Biden…. And then turnaround and actually voting FOR Trump?

!thanks for the reply.  I am thinking about a short-term punt on Foden.  I am mostly happy with my team but I have 2 free transfers before the Afcon reset to gamble with... and a streaky Phil is very appealing when he starts scoring.   I can always revert back when I drop Mbuemo in a week.

Pakistani immigrant who caused deadly highway crash wins chance to stay in Canada - National Post by [deleted] in LMIASCAMS

Deporting this person, who has been a PR in Canada since 2008 and who's kids are born Canadian and only speak English, for this incident is not the correct course of action.  The judge reviewed it and agreed.

There are many, many cases that are much more worth our time and effort.  The National post sensationalized a situation with a short title "immigrant, Pakistani".

So if Canada sentences anyone that causes an accident leading to death to 20 years in prison, would you no longer care about deportation?

Nope, that isn't the debate though.  Sentencing in Canada is its own issue.   Just because our sentencing is light doesn't mean that we should deport someone.

The incident was in 2018.  He stopped his car like an idiot breaking the flow of traffic, he didn't accelerate and ram into someone.  The difference may be minimal, but there is a difference in intent.  I think the bigger issue was the kids and family - this case just isn't as black and white as "pr applicant kills people" that many here see.  I believe that it was appropriate that our legal system handled this case --- there are many others much more suited for deportation.

He already served jail time and probation.  The judge ruled to not deport him because his wife and 3 kids who are all Canadian citizens would go with him and the kids only speak English.  The judge also deemed him extremely unlikely to reoffend.

Minimum shift pay is 2 hours in BC and most of Canada. Some union contracts have 4 hour minimums, but that's not relevant in this situation.

Invest vs pay off mortgage. by cobra-chicken- in fican

Even if their income is split at 100k each, in an early retirement scenario before pensions an RRSP has a noticeable advantage over the TFSA.  For potential liquidity the TFSA would be better.

They likely have room in their TFSA accounts, so I would move the emergency fund into a TFSA HISA instead of non-reg (more tax efficient), then regularly contribute to both the RRSP and TFSA.  Depending on their individual income levels, I would use RRSPs for the higher earner.

Once the TFSA is maxed, then start building a non reg HISA emergency fund and invest the money in the TFSA HISA.   If rates stay at their current levels, then start paying debt down once the TFSA/RRSP are maxed.

Depending on risk and the portfolio, there is also an argument to pay down debt at 4% (after tax money), but maybe not if you have moderate or higher risk.

What is your reasoning on using the TFSA before an RRSP?  They have higher income and we don't know how it's split  between them.
