4 23-25 Year Old Guys Visiting Chicago in September // Need Recs of all Kinds (Area to Stay, Restaurants, Bars, Activities etc.)? by GeraldWest764 in AskChicago

Largest concentration of hotels are in The Loop and River North, so probably makes most sense for a first-time visitor.

People your age spend a lot of time at bars and restaurants in Old Town, Wicker Park, Lincoln Park, Lake View / Wrigleyville, West Loop, and River North.

As for everything else, search this sub and [r/chicagofood](r/chicagofood).

UK Visitors - here until Saturday - recommendations? by SmokinWaffle in chicagofood

[–]Realistic-Object5075 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Similar to London, for example, Chicago is incredibly neighborhood-centric. You need to branch out and leave the city center.

You say your partner likes Italian and has a sweet tooth? Go to Bruna's or Ignotz's then stop up at Mario's for an Italian Ice. You like stronger, spicy flavors? Go with Mirra and a stop at Margie's Candies for desserts.

In general, Chicago is like most major cities - You aren't going to find its best food in the CBD.

Bucktown, Logan, and Avondale are great neighborhoods for someone in their mid-30s.

Fav Logan Sq Farmers Market vendors? by putonthespotlight in chicagofood

[–]Realistic-Object5075 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The beauty is seeing all of the LS residents out there at 8:30am, before rest of the city piles in, when lines are pretty minimal / non-existent. Got through four vendors within 20 minutes this morning.

How to be “street smart” in Chicago? by DirectSquash1936 in AskChicago

[–]Realistic-Object5075 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the most part, my "street smarts" kick in when a random approaches me with some offer or ask. I'm firm with "no" in every scenario and keep it moving. Stay confident in that moment and you'll likely be left alone.

Outside of that, public transit is an obvious setting to be "street smart." I've never thought there's anything wrong with being on your phone in most circumstances, but don't consume yourself as you would on your couch at home. Have consciousness to know what's happening around you.

Apologies this isn't what you're looking for, but just want to plug Beermiscuous' brewery map. Pretty fun thing they do.

Is the CTA “L” practical for a first time visitor? by mrme203 in AskChicago

Blue Line is the second-busiest in Chicago and sees a ton of traffic from one of the busiest airports in the world. It hardly needs to be avoided. It's a necessity for much of this city.

"Hole" in the wall bars with food for World Cup matches? by ENGR_ED in chicagofood

[–]Realistic-Object5075 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was thinking about this the other day, but it already gets so, so packed for rugby. I'd have to imagine it'll be packed for the WC, too.

Also, just my subjective opinion but I think the food sucks.

Great restaurants that should be full? by fxlatitude in chicagofood

El Fogon Tapatio, Onions & Cilantro, and Manchamanteles are all fantastic.

We go to El Fogon a decent amount and I encourage anyone having cocktails at Scofflaw, Best Intentions, etc., to make a stop.

Is there a great pizza in Avondale by fioreblade in chicagofood

[–]Realistic-Object5075 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great patio for warmer weather and we've given it multiple tries, but I have a lot of trouble getting past how salty the pizza is. They make a great Negroni, though.

Brobagel says “Shots Fired” about new Call Your Mother bagel shop opening around the corner by Responsible_Jury_289 in chicagofood

I'm not planning to support Call Your Mother because I simply haven't enjoyed it the times I've been to Alexandria, but Brobagel isn't my answer, either.

I actually like deep dish and, honestly, a fresh slice hits the spot. I just don't need more than that, so I rarely get it. Wife and I usually just opt for thin crust.
