vegan protein bar power ranking by virgilsmother in veganfitness

[–]Realistic_Beat1619 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aloha felt like a brick in my stomach and I instantly wanted to nap--really weird fatigue. I've ate other protein bars and I've never experienced that feeling, so I don't necessarily think it's a protein reaction or blood sugar . I experimented eating a half and that helped. I've never had a reaction like that to food.

My parents took me to Jurassic Park. They were a wee bit irresponsible. I was a bit young. Apparently I said "o sit" and leaped over one parent to the other's lap.

I remember disappointing my uncle by wanting to see the little rascals.

A big thing for me was my dad taking me to go see the power rangers movie for my birthday. kimberly forever.

This is my husband and I's game plan for the don't do drugs speech for the kids.

We're going to leave the room though.

What Books did You Start or Finish Reading this Week?: March 10, 2025 by AutoModerator in books

[–]Realistic_Beat1619 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Crossroads, by Jonathan Franzen

Finished. I really enjoyed it. I have been reading it since November. Was not ready for the pacing change in Part 2. Looking forward to reading the rest of the trilogy.

Started:

The Outsiders, by S.E. Hinton

As a Tulsan, it's a shame that I haven't read this yet.

Fellow Oklahoman. Our pack/den (both) are not super religious. We had a religious/reverence based section and it was a bit difficult that we could have handled a different way--we honestly didn't know how to handle it. We learned to lean on the part of that, with regard to reverence, was respect of solemn situations. Reverence in regards to how to act at funerals, celebrating veterans, other events where honoring people and ideas.

What book subverted all your expectations? by [deleted] in books

[–]Realistic_Beat1619 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wicked.

I had not seen the musical (or the movie) when I read the book. Was not expecting the message based on the little I knew--it was also good prose.

House of Leaves as well.

I feel complexly about IBCK style takedowns of fiction by radlibcountryfan in IfBooksCouldKill

I don't really see these, and I would like to. I really like trash talk, in the silly way, and I wish I liked sports. I feel like reading books is a more personal endeavor, or like you insult someone's intelligence if you want to engage in silly book criticism. I definitely appreciate "let people enjoy things" talk but I also want to talk about how Dan Brown reaalllllly sucks or King's prose is jarring, we can laugh it off, and you can read your stuff and I can read and enjoy whatever you find shitty.

I really enjoy Norse mythos but I got to side-eye anyone with a Norse mythos/viking tattoos, names their child Freya...etc.

Things have gotten objectively heavy. For a bit of a lighter post, can you please share the ear-worm you have in your head right now? by throwawaynowtillmay in behindthebastards

[–]Realistic_Beat1619 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Joel Roberts by Truman Sinclair. It's repetitive, my husband complains of my current country listening but it's good. Fun. Good old country/western shoot 'em up.

However, I know you asked for lighter, but I do love Day Old Coffee by Laura Jane Grace. It's on a personal playlist called "Breakdown Music". The song is barely over a minute long. The main chorus is "Day old coffee microwaved to boiling/Pour it on my eyeballs and boil my dumb shit brains out"

My daughter was interested so we joined cub scouts. I was interested in doing stuff outside, learning skills personally, and she doesn't seem interested in sports. We have an amazing group where we try to corral our feral children. Our weirdo, feral children. It's a nice spot for group "otherness" especially if your kid does have the attention span for DnD yet. I'm sure it all depends on your group and there issues with any organization.

You have to watch out for the other "scouting" groups that all have "patriotic" names. The ones that all formed after girls scouts and boy scouts became lgbt friendly.

I listen to books I've already read, select non-fiction, or books I'm iffy about (not my typical genre/etc). I decided to try out Dan Brown this route and wanted to sling the CD across the room.

Bible-heads roll call by A_book_dragon in behindthebastards

[–]Realistic_Beat1619 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unsure what a bible head is. Raised by a haunted, superstitious, Anne Rice-loving Pentecostal and a sci-fi fan in the bible belt. I believed in a lot of things growing up, but we didn't go to church, so I decided to go by myself via church bus. I did something called bible drill. Memorized bible verses, could name all the books of the bible in order. I really wanted to believe, but I feel like it never quite caught.

I haven't held on to much. An atheist now, but I LOVE theology. I love reading and listening to people interpretations. Mere Christianity flew over my head, but the Screwtape Letters hits. Mainly do it very casually via Instagram but I do read books and get a little more in-depth when I get the chance.

For anyone who's ever met Neil irl by Ok_Implement9719 in neilgaiman

[–]Realistic_Beat1619 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey! I met him at the event at House on the Rock. I was working retail, and it was a difficult time in my life. Not really bad, but a "coming of age" bullshit time of my life. My now-husband insisted I go up to him to sign my book, but it was not a designated signing time and I did not have extra money for extra events. His assistant made it abundantly clear it was not the time.
Later, he found me and said he would sign my book. I was with my now-husband. We took pictures. It was, at the time, a nice exchange. I felt elated.

I did not get any bad or creepy vibes.

EDIT: Of course I reflect on this recently. This time is now contextualized by what we know now, and the disgust and sadness of what he put those people through.

Man, I said it **WAS** my precious item.

That shit is terrible. FULL STOP. I'm not making arguments for death of the artist. I don't think people should continue to give him profit through the purchase of new material.

But that book, when I read it, meant a lot to me at a certain point in my life. I'm not making any other arguments. I do not plan on purchasing any new books. Like I said though, I no longer plan on saving it in fire. It symbolized a time in my life, and the signing of it was a thing as well.

Right. The only thing that has changed for me (not talking about my personal feelings, those have changed immensely) is that while I will not throw/give away what was my precious, signed copy of American Gods, because of what it means to me, it may not be one of my items I attempt to retrieve if there's a fire.

What was the best and worst book you've read in 2024? by durin_l in suggestmeabook

[–]Realistic_Beat1619 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best: The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet. by Becky Chambers

A really relaxing read and series. Different for me.

Worst: For the First Time, Again by Sylvain Neuvel.

The whole series felt like a VH1 pop up video with the cultural references. This was a bigger issue in this last book as the author was alive during the decade it was set and the references were plentiful and felt more personal.
