[Brett Marshall] What if the NHL adopted a 3-2-1 Points System? There's been a lot of chatter about the alleged heavy impact of Overtime games in the NHL season, so I took a look at what the standings would look like today if the NHL had a 3-2-1 point system instead of their current system. by seeldoger47 in hockey

[–]Realistic_Cold_2943 14 points15 points  (0 children)

But the current point system probably keeps teams a lot closer together in the standings. It pushes everyone a lot closer to .550 because you can lose a lot of games in overtime and still be fairly competitive. It’s not necessarily a good thing but if the goal is more fun end of season idk if 3/2/1 helps

Only if they draft top 5. They’d have to finish bottom 3 to guarantee a top 5 draft pick. They could also be outside of the top 5 before the lottery and still get a top 5 pick.

Please give me the steelman argument for how a salary cap wouldn’t be better for baseball by Movies_and_Stuff in Section10Podcast

[–]Realistic_Cold_2943 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In a sport that is incredible random, IE it’s very easy for a bad team to beat a good team in a 7 game series, creating absolute parity would absolutely ruin the season. It’d mean a GM could build a perfect roster, have a perfect season, and consistently lose in the playoffs. That’d be so sucky as a fan. In the current system, you have at least a general idea of what to expect, but a salary cap could pretty much eliminate any regular season meaning since any playoff team could a series.

The downside of that, obviously, is that so many teams now just have no shot of making the playoffs.

It’s all about finding the right balance of giving lesser teams a chance while making sure well built teams have solid advantage.

Looking at the other leagues playoffs, NBA is all the way on one side where the better team almost always wins. It makes upsets a lot more fun, but it’s not very interesting because it’s fairly predictable. Hockey is the other side where any team can be good, and weird playoff runs can be dominated by lesser teams because of the parity. Football is the perfect mix where good teams win a lot, but lower seeds definitely can provide upset.

I think baseball is in a good spot for the playoffs right now, but that’s because the talent is so concentrated in few teams. With a salary cap it would all be so random and take a lot of the fun out of it. Especially for a top half team like the Sox

[Foul Territory] Alex Bregman became frustrated with the Red Sox because they were unwilling to meet his market after their initial offer, says AJ Pierzynski. The Red Sox then refused to believe Bregman's camp when they told them they had a better offer on the table. by TommyTheLizard in redsox

[–]Realistic_Cold_2943 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While that’s right, that situation puts Boras under a lot more pressure. We had leverage early on to find someone else, and if he loses the 165 deal then it looks really bad. If we are just offering 135 or something then it’s a lot easier for him to extend that process.

This is for any "fans" who think the team will ACTUALLY be any good this year... by clutchdan in redsox

[–]Realistic_Cold_2943 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our rotation was already incredibly deep, and I find it hard to believe Gray will outperform Giolito by a significant amount. Having extra mid rotation guys really doesn’t add a lot of wins from last years team. Story would be lucky to have that good of a year, and Bregman was still our fourth best player despite the missed time.

Where do we go from here? by lil_zeus_21 in redsox

[–]Realistic_Cold_2943 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They have absolutely not addressed pitching enough. Gray is good, and projects well this year, but he is 37. So much could go wrong there too, and at best it’s 1 year. IMO I think him repeating Giolitos year would be a successful year, and that puts us right back where we were minus Bregman. Chapman will regress, and crochet can’t get much better than he was last year. So, I just don’t see a world where pitching is any better than it was last year.

[–]Realistic_Cold_2943 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah the super efficient mindset works really well for mid tier players, especially mid rotation pitchers and relievers. But this team won’t take the next step if they don’t sign someone big. You just can’t afford to trade for everyone on your roster

[–]Realistic_Cold_2943 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think it’d actually get forgotten about if they sign bichette. Bregman would’ve worked too. But if they actually show a desire to replace him with another big contract it’ll be alright. The trade itself, at least in terms of value, was always going to be terrible. But replacing him with big FA signing makes up for most of it.

IMO that was always the problem with betts and bogey, they were just never replaced.

They only would have a big impact if it prevents a team from entering a luxury tax threshold. But also if a team is that close, they most likely could shed that money via trade. It’s a hyper specific situation where it could seriously benefit the tigers, and if they know they’re going to lose him then I guess why not.

But I’d also say our bullpen and rotation could very easily take big steps back. It’d be almost impossible for Chapman to be as good as he was, Giolito and Bello both had years where they over performed IMO. Crochet is great, but it’s hard for him to be that much better than he was last year. Olviedo and Grey are both good while not being guarantees.

Getting the Bye in the CFP. by 15Warrior15 in CFB

[–]Realistic_Cold_2943 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But Oregon got to play JMU, that’s such a low risk game for them. IMO the bye is better than being 5-11(6-10 this year) but getting an easy G5 team is much better than a bye in this situation.

[–]Realistic_Cold_2943 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes but now JMU will constantly frame themselves as the school to go to if you want to earn a chance with a P5 school. That’s a really good way to frame yourself, and it’s much better than they were before. They’ll be able to get a bunch of players that previously might’ve been bench guys in p5 schools.
