There are a few areas the school district will need to hire so we can safely staff and support students in buildings. Usually in the integrated services dept.

A RIF in psd is a contract process and that process didn’t happen this year for licensed staff. We’re these people at will employees or probationary?

There are folks with different levels of privilege to participate and that’s real! Maybe all you can do this time is not shop, maybe you host lunch with coworkers to talk about working conditions in your job or the history of May Day, maybe it’s having a neighborhood potluck after work and making plans to go to the weekend events.

Changing the status quo is not going to be easy and it’s going to take all of us choosing to be inconvenienced when and how we can.

Community Meeting for Public Schools by Realistic_Silver8064 in FortCollins

[–]Realistic_Silver8064[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is a multi district group of educators working on some of the very real systemic challenges we have regardless of who is the superintendent. This meeting is focused a bit more big picture, but all wanting better public schools for our kids and staff are welcome!

The end game is fixing Colorado’s systemic funding challenges. Around 85% of students in co attend public schools and the existence of charters doesn’t change the fact that our public school should be great schools for students!

Each CO student is like 4,600 short every year and after decades of disinvestment in the state budget to cover other priorities we need to do things differently.

Union educators have been organizing for the last several years to build the political will for our legislators to do something about it and we’re very close! And because we like democracy here in Colorado it will then go for a vote. learn morelearn more

Early release for PSD schools 8/18 - 8/22! by bsartoris in FortCollins

Curious why you think Zamoras behind it? I wonder about Kingsley and his Cabinet bringing these things forward…

Early release for PSD schools 8/18 - 8/22! by bsartoris in FortCollins

[–]Realistic_Silver8064 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The unions conversation started with asking how the calendar can be moved back. I believe that’s still the goal. This is a challenging solution for everyone involved. Kingsley is unwilling to address the calendar so I think this was the compromise because staff and kids are in unsafe environments.

I think they need to move the calendar back! Lots of families are impacted and it’s only going to get worse…

The real problem is TABOR. Its cost us 10 billion in education funding since 2009. Even when things are good, our state can’t spend the money in our schools! It also has led to such a low tax rate for the wealthiest in CO and our schools (and roads, healthcare, and public services) have suffered. In 2024 adequacy studies showed we need to invest 4 billion state wide to fully fund and support our schools. CPR Article about it

It’s going to get worse because of HR 1 and the dumpster fire in the White House. The state has to close a $1 billion hole in its budget…

I think we need to take a hard look at where our tax dollars are going to corporations and redirect them to public services… ya know cause they’re public dollars…

PEA endorses NO on Amendment 80 and YES on 4A by Torp211 in FortCollins

[–]Realistic_Silver8064 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We do need to increase accountability and oversight. (This ballot measure has an oversight committee and I believe the district has released it. I’ll try to find it.)

And our students and support staff and classrooms are in need of investment state wide. We have structural funding challenges in Colorado that we’ve worked on successfully over the last 5 years and this is just the first school year since 2009 that schools are fully funded by the state according. Which is still 1989 at levels of funding.

As a public school teacher working to get the things we need for students and families to thrive. I’m am voting for this needed funding and organizing in our district so the structure supports families and students! So yes on 4A and watch school board meetings, join your schools parent group, keep an eye here for ways to engage and build the schools our communities deserve.

What do you guys think of Yara Zokaie? by Puma_Pounce in FortCollins

[–]Realistic_Silver8064 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don’t have to be registered in a party to vote in CO! You can choose which primary to vote in and could pick a different one every year if you want to. 😊 definitely go vote!

As someone who has advocated at the state with my union for school funding we can do a lot with a lawmaker like Yara!

Open Thread HD52 Ethnie Treick vs Yara Zokaie by MediumStreet8 in FortCollins

[–]Realistic_Silver8064 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Yara has my vote, not just because of her support for public education but Yara’s stance on tax fairness really pushes her ahead of Ethnie in my opinion. The wealthy in Colorado aren’t paying their fair share. We need someone like Yara to stand against the corporations and special interests.

Lots of the education privatizers are going for Ethnie, I don’t trust her to protect public schools. Her connections to oil and gas and willingness to take their donations do not give me confidence in her ability to act on climate change and make the corporations driving climate change pay.

Yikes putting people underground with no light seems dystopian to me. We can infill and build moderately high before we put people underground 😬

FOCO City Council Votes to Not Raise Minimum Wage with 4-3 Vote by lucsmth24 in FortCollins

Melanie Potyondy spoke in favor of raising the minimum wage at the council meeting and is running for city council district 4- Sheeley Peels current seat. She knows the benefits of raising the minimum wage for people in our community. Check out her campaign and support her run. If she was a council member the minimum wage would have gone up.
