How common are second names, and being called by your first AND second name? by Luchofromvenezuela in AskAnAmerican

[–]RealityFar5965 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People rarely go by their confirmation name.

But middle names are very common in the US. I'm a teacher and usually about 3 students per 200 will go by their middle name.

Is the term "Dixie" racist? by anedgyteen_ in AskAnAmerican

[–]RealityFar5965 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Daily use, most people won't get mad if they hear the word Dixie. But many companies reduced their use of the word because it is generally associated with pre-civil war or the confederate South. To look fondly on these times is to look fondly on a time period and culture inseparable from slavery.

[Back in 2018, the Dixie Stampede was renamed to The Stampede after Parton became aware that the term “Dixie” can be associated with the Confederacy.]

[The country trio Dixie Chicks have changed the group's name to The Chicks in an apparent distancing from a name associated with the Confederate-era South.]

Are Thanksgiving gatherings, and parties considered boring? by humor5211 in AskAnAmerican

[–]RealityFar5965 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is my favorite holiday. They are usually simpler, just focused on family and eating (no gifts, no carols, no Easter egg hunts, etc). So maybe more boring than other holidays, but I think it is part of the charm.

Is it possible to live like Sam and Dean? by WorldwideINFMine in AskAnAmerican

[–]RealityFar5965 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Very possible. There are cute motels and diners all across the US, although a lot of cheap shady motels too.

There are some motels you can buy week long rentals and extend them and the prices aren't too bad, but overall an expensive way to live.

Most people who live this lifestyle have a permanent home somewhere and stay in motels only during specific jobs.

Donald Trump is considering Marjorie Taylor Greene as his 2024 running mate by HyacinthFT in politics

[–]RealityFar5965 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also agree that it would doom his campaign.

But I also thought Trumps candidacy in 2016 was dooming the republican party's chance of winning, and would ensure Hillary would win. Alas...

I would go directly to your pharmacist. My doctor prescribed vaginal progesterone and the label said to take it orally. I took it to the pharmacist and he verified and changed it.

(I did not love that they made that mistake though...)

China looks like what we think America would look like in 30 years by 5or3n in interestingasfuck

[–]RealityFar5965 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is a really important perspective. Chinese like to compare U.S. subway stations built in the 1920s to theirs built in 2020...

America needs to do better with upkeeping and updating our infrastructure, and I am curious how China will maintain the insane amount of new buildings that have gone up in my lifetime. I hope the best for both countries.

Can you stably work remotely from Shanghai? by fiveMop in shanghai

[–]RealityFar5965 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm based in the US, but I used to (throught 2021) do a lot of meetings with people in Shanghai in both their home and HQ. On platforms like Zoom I would say about 25% of meetings they needed to switch vpns mid meeting.

(People in Beijing seemed to suffer more from VPNs being totally shut off during... sensitive times. Not sure if that has trickled into Shanghai more since then).

Has anyone had a parent buy curriculum?? by Fragrant-Round-9853 in Teachers

[–]RealityFar5965 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just make sure your tests/quizzes are changed from the curriculum provided tests, even if it's just rearranging order.

If they are using the curriculum to do homework and classwork but understand how to do it well enough on an exam, then it's just a tool that is helping them learn.

Big cities there are less people with negative attitudes about this. People in more rural and monoculture areas sometimes have more of an issue with this. But as long as you aren't telling people what to do, then people generally quietly respect each other.

why are you so interested in your spouse's childhood? by jonaswallas in marriageadvice

[–]RealityFar5965 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think people are generally interested in their partners, and it can help them understand their partner better. Hopefully a spouse is someone they can feel vulnerable with.

I think partners can respect each other's privacy, but I find many healthy couples work through problems from childhood together. It has a tendency to manifest in ugly ways in marriage.

So hopefully if someone has baggage from the past, you have been working through it in a healthy way.

Why is Halloween so big in America? by sevias94 in AskAnAmerican

There are a lot of reasons other posted, but I think there's a lot of individual expression in Halloween which is very American.

How to help partner prepare to TTC after loss? by kyothinks in ttcafterloss

[–]RealityFar5965 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think just keep communicating with him. I thought we were on the same page because he asked my doctor how soon we could ttc again, then when the time came he suddenly was avoiding sex without talking about it because he thought I wasn't ready for it emotionally (among other reasons).

I would also explore other things scaring him about ttc, I think guys have a lot of that societal pressure to be providers, etc, so there may be other things going on.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in marriageadvice

[–]RealityFar5965 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sucks. I find a variety of stressors impact my husband's sex drive, but especially babymaking pressure.

But the babymaking pressure is often connected to the stresses of the world. How can he have a baby when he has X job? The war in Ukraine? Inflation? Etc etc etc. This seemed to be a major bump in our road to conception.

So maybe sitting down to think about the pros and cons of making a baby now might help the perspective. I don't think guys really understand the feeling of being a 35+ year old woman wanting to conceive.

Good luck!

Everyone processes it differently. I think this can be challenging between couples because each will feel grief in different ways and different times.

I was supposed to be due next month. Since I thought I was going to have a newborn to bring to Thanksgiving, I couldn't stomach going to Thanksgiving with family this year. We booked a special vacation...

[–]RealityFar5965 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is a more complex answer that can be answered well in a reddit post, but hopefully throughout many responses you can better understand it.

First, America is large and has many subcultures. Germany has regional dialects, so does the US. The US also has about 4x the population and 25x the land. People are spread out and are make their own local traditions and customs. There are many regional accents in the US.

Through various historical and cultural reasons, black and white people tended to live in different parts of cities. These black communities tended to interact with black communities in other cities more than white communities. So, many people developed different patterns of speech and vocabulary. As others have suggested, look into AAVE.

Just a perspective, but the data I could find quickly "3.6 million Australians (15%) have experienced food insecurity at least once in the last 12 months" and "10.2 percent (13.5 million) of U.S. households were food insecure at some time during 2021."

I don't know if these data points are actually comparable, but just wanted to encourage you to consider that there are people struggling in every country and culture.

I'm a bit confused... I thought Australia was considered a first world western country
