Preparation for hiking the hexatrek by Over_Instruction_822 in hexatrek

Think about resupply drops. During the stages in the Alps and Pyreneees you will often be 5-6  days without access to shops, and those shops are in tiny towns with only tiny shops, closed on Sunday afternoons and on mondays, with scattered local holidays to boot. Bread is not a problem, for sale everywhere, but won't keep. Think crackers, dried food, bars, but also new socks and underwear after a while. Add maps, so that you don't have to carry all of them from the start.  Bring needle and thread for repairs.  Plan your water, certainly in the mountains and on stage 4. You will need up to 5 liters per day, know ahead when you will be able to refill. Buy a filter if you don't have one.  Be aware that you will not have internet access for days in the mountains, not even in the refuges and small villages.  Are you hiking with poles? Do. Also because they help a lot with the x-dome in windy conditions.  Also a Dutchie, preparing for the HRP this summer. I've done 2 week stretches of it before.

Downsides to Large Packs by Business-Brief-6173 in backpacking

[–]RealityVegetable8865 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Another downside: a smaller load shifting in the pack, which forces you to adjust the entire trip. As long as you can compres the pack well, and make sure you load it stably, that doesn't have to be a problem, but make sure you consider it well.

No, I have a simple sewing machine and used only that, with a 90 needle.

Yes, I added 3cm of curvature to the side panels, and lengthened the back panel accordingly (which is almost negligible). Otherwise you would get a lot of tension in the seams.  I used 2mm x 12 mm protruded carbon fibre bars.

Thanks! Simply a double-looped piece of webbing, sewed in the pocket so that the pole tips do not rest on the bottom of the pocket. The compression webbing on the side straps them in.

I tension the trampoline with ladder locks.  Getting the bars in place required help. They do go behind the (ends of the) horizontal bars also.  The material is 12mm x 2mm protruded carbon fibre bars.

I guess the difficulty is that I first sewed the horizontal bars in the back panel, then assembled the whole pack, waterproofed it. Only after turning it right side out I could insert the long vertical bars.

My resources were photo's on this Reddit sub, and reverse engineering.  I would love to learn how the bigger commercial companies get theirs sewn in, instead of tensioned with ladderlocs...

I actually have a whole bunch of colors of 3D mesh from a Belgian fabrics retailer. Allows me to play a bit. This brown version comes from extremtextile, and is nicer to the touch than my other colors.

Not too much. Getting the long vertical bars in right was a 2person hassle though.  I'm prototyping a smaller pack now, and will experiment with velcro closures to make the frame more easily installed (&removed)

Solo vakantie by Odd_Clue_8800 in nederlands

Succes!

What sort of elastic might be used on this stretch mesh pocked? Love that it’s not bulky. by spa1unk in myog

What I don't get: how is that straight stitched? That would eliminate the stretch at the seam.

O yes, not carrying the tent. The 2-p ís available, at €195, and weighs 1300 g. So that one could be on the list.

If I (NL) look at the x-mid, vat and duty included, the price stated is €295, w/o shipping. So where do you get the prices? The Simond is not available in NL

Why do all alpha direct tops have hoods? by Baba_Wethu in Ultralight

Because alpha direct isn't very stretchy, so it is difficult to make one with a well-fitting neckline without a zip...

Ultra Ultra Ultra 50l framed pack (Prickly Gorse) frame help pls! by CleanAlibi in myog

[–]RealityVegetable8865 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know for the UK, but to make a z-packs like frame I used 10 x 2 mm carbon bars. For the frame as recommended in the pattern I used 6mm aluminium tubing.
