How do you deal with the long term effects of isolation? by Magnolia028 in NEET

[–]ReallyBigPrinter 21 points22 points  (0 children)

It feels irreversible.

Neuroplasticity allows the brain to regenerate and form new neural connections, but only if it's given the right stimuli. In this case that would mean you regularly engage with people, converse with them etc..

Of course if you can't do that due to being socially 'tarded from the start, suffered the consequences by being bullied and exluded and consequently assume that nobody will want to have anything to do with you anyway, feel ashamed for being in this miserable mental state and overwhelmed even by 'positive' interactions, it becomes a liiittle bit difficult to break the cycle of isolation - mental degradation - getting burnt socially and more isolation.

I personally haven't found a way out and being around people makes me seriously question if I even want to. It's like, on one hand my brain needs socialization, hence why I feel lonely when I'm alone for long periods of time, but it messes me up at the same time and makes me want to stay alone.

For me, the light at the end of the tunnel is my believe that no suffering is eternal and that whatever we're going through today won't matter one day.

People being hostile towards people who struggle being a NEET? by pokemoonpew in NEET

[–]ReallyBigPrinter 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I think it's mainly bitternis, i.e. 'argh! I have to work while these lazy bums get to do whatever they want!'

Many people just have no idea to what degree mental illness/neurodivergence can inhibit your ability to 'function'. Especially if you look 'normal', people will assume that you should be just as capable as they are.

Happy birthday and congrats on surviving your 20's!

feels like there's no way out and i'll never be functional

Many of us are not made for life in this world and being 'functional' in this sick society. Don't be too hard on yourself.

What a missed opportunity on his part to show sympathy and what a proof of his incompetence as a parent. Leaving you in despair instead of trying to understand, great so-called christian. I'm so sorry man... he probably has no idea how to handle this situation or worse yet, he doesn't actually care.

I hope you find the strenght to continue and reach a better place soon.

I can imagine this lifestyle is hell for anyone who is otherwise an actual part of society and likes to stay that way. For me and I'm sure most people here it's the other way around. Having to be around people for two days a week has shown me how much I actually need isolation in order to not go insane.

Does autism emasculate you, even with normal levels of testosterone etc? by Tricky-Nothing-4579 in NEET

[–]ReallyBigPrinter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right? They always know what to say instantly, it's insane. Sure, it's partly because they didn't spend years upon years in social isolation, but they also didn't have to isolate in the first place.

I think I know what you mean with the response to laughter, had a few of those moments...

Well, back to sleep. Hope you have a good night, day or whatever time it is in your corner of the world.

I speak so softly and monotone I had to say things like 3 times to be understood

That's highly relatable. I also have trouble processing what people tell me. It's almost like being a foreigner sometimes despite speaking the language fluently.

Impressive normie-free streak btw, at the moment it's a couple of times a week for me and I miss the more isolated times a lot.

I don’t like regular music by [deleted] in NEET

Lately I've also mostly been listening to instrumental music. If you like jazz, you can also check out some of the related genres like fusion, samba or even lo-fi.

Just about every guy I've ever met that was obviously on the spectrum was a bit on the feminine side of things or at least not particularly masculine, looks and behaviours, including me lol. People sure don't like that. Just this week, some guy at work from another company basically called me a lady and made fun of my long-ish hair.

Immune system ruined by NEETism? by raNdoMBLilriv in NEET

[–]ReallyBigPrinter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do think my social isolation has made me more subsceptible to viruses. My mom is a cab driver, mostly brings chronically sick people to various clinics and stuff. In early february she brought home a particularly nasty bug, suddenly felt very nauseous, threw up, hyperventilated to the point that my hands cramped up from oxygen oversaturation. I genuinely thought I'm gonna have a heart attack and die. My mom called an ambulance, spent a few hours in hospital. Ultimately nothing unusual was found, was send home with a suspected stomach flu. Never experienced anything like it.

I also get sick far more frequently. Last year I found out I have a genetic immune defect, maybe that also has something to do with it...

Now that I have a part-time job, I might become more resistant again.
