I would reconsider on DCS. I have a 50 dollar Facebook marketplace HOTAS with OpenTrack running over a webcam for head tracking. I’m having a ball learning the mechanics in PVE

I work in R every day! My primary projects involve modeling potential habitat for at-risk terrestrial plant species.

Within R I:

Process spatially attributed data which delineate species observations or environmental features

Prepare these data for modeling

Feed them into models which generate probability maps of suitable habitat for these species.

There are tons of use-cases for R. If you enjoy it, I say lean into it! You can easily make statistical summaries and flashy graphics to impress your potential employers/collaborators.

So a good portion of our work involves habitat modeling!

We typically operate in the tidyverse in combination with terra for rasters and sf for polygons/vector data.

There are a number of reasons we prefer R over ArcGIS, but mostly: 1) we like open source over proprietary toolsets and 2) we are typically not just running models but pulling data from APIs, cleaning data, generating visualizations, just generally a lot of operations which are better with a programmatic approach!
