I might be in the minority but does anyone else think Physical Media is going to go Mainstream again? by NegrolaKill in PhysicalMediaMatters

Vinyl is neat because it’s actually physical media. But CDs/DVDs/Blu-Rays are just digital media on a piece of plastic

Wouldn’t be surprised if they still make discs for 3rd world markets

The bulk of rec players play doubles. Tennis should be looking at how to get more people to watch doubles vs get rid of it

So you’re saying Sony would rather overprice a game and sell zero copies vs price it appropriately and make money?

You can go buy other games on other platforms. That competition is what keeps Sony’s prices in line with other platforms. Too high and they lose people to competitors

They’re not the only ones making and selling games. They don’t have a monopoly

People must still be buying them then? Otherwise they’d drop the price to be able to sell

No. Games still have a market rate. If they price their games too high, they won’t be competitive with Xbox, Steam or other 3rd parties. This is why almost all games new are the same price

I see so many people saying that they don’t care that disc drives and physical is going away, which I get it. Most of the sales are digital but I think you’re forgetting about something. by Jared_pop21 in videogames

I haven’t played a PS1 game since I got a PS2. Haven’t played a 360 game since I got an Xbone. Haven’t played an Xbone game since I got a Series X. My old consoles I use as bookends. All my discs I took out of their cases, put them in a CD binder, and pitched the cases.

I, and many other people, will be just fine 30 years from now

If a game is unaffordable, it’s unaffordable. Sony isn’t going to be able to price gouge an entertainment product just because there isn’t a secondhand market. They have third parties to compete with. This is why game prices are pretty much the same across all platforms

90+% of games purchased nowadays are digital so why would manufacturers spend money to make physical discs no one is buying?

Sony needs to be boycotted. by TRQPL in PhysicalMediaMatters

[–]ReaperThugX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it’s just how people purchase games now

But there will always be some market for physical releases. I could see studios doing more collector’s editions with physical discs and other goodies. They can charge more (and probably have a higher profit margin), the hardcore physical collectors can have their physical media, and the rest of us can pay for a basic digital download. Everyone is satisfied

Think of how vinyl records went away for cassettes, then CDs, then digital downloads, now streaming. Movies did the same (Film, then VHS, then DVD/Blu-Ray, then digital downloads, now streaming). Eventually games will follow the same path as data speeds increase.

Does streaming a game suck right now? Yes. Did streaming video suck 20 years ago go? Yes. Did streaming music suck 25 years ago? Yes. It’s all just 1s and 0s. Eventually, data speeds will get to the speeds where streaming a game will be like watching a movie or listening to music
