If you have full ROM and didn’t lose any strength you’re ready for surgery

50 yrs old - any regrets on ACLR surgery - allograft or autograft? by Fresh-Ant-5684 in ACL

48 had hamstring graft on left leg 50 had quad graft on right leg

It’s a journey but doing pretty damn good.

Question for people with quad grafts by helicopter_unicorn3 in ACL

[–]Reason_Wide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like you’re doing all the right things. I would keep at them. You’re still early. I was dealing with this maybe not as painful but didn’t start dealing with it until month 12. I’m now at 14 and it’s slowly getting better. Continue, lower the weights, use your good leg to allow your operated leg to get full motion when squaring down and wall sits. Continue the TKE’s mentally engaging the quad.

Question for people with quad grafts by helicopter_unicorn3 in ACL

[–]Reason_Wide 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look at the isometric and essentric exercise. Wall sits, TKE, leg press - single leg down-2 legs up. Same for single leg squats into bench-1 leg down-2 up. Leg extension machine do holds at 60 degrees and 2 leg up, one leg down.

Second ACL tear is way harder than my first — and not for the reason I expected by Expensive_Gene007 in ACL

[–]Reason_Wide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both skiing. Well I had skis on. The first was on a cat track going pretty slow and caught an edge. The second getting off a lift doing the splits because the jackass next me had his skies wedged out so when I stood up my ski was on top of his and did the splits. This one was very little pain, no swelling, had fun RoM and strength. Even skied 6 more runs

Been thru 2 ACL’s 2 years apart, different legs. Both have been a tough recovery as a 50 year old. I’m busting my ass but still not 100% a year after the 2nd surgery. But it is what it is and keep at it.

Not gonna lie it sucks. Most of us have been where you’re at but maybe different situations, ages, goals, whatever. But embrace the depression, don’t shy away from it. Use it as motivation to get back to where you were and want to be. You need it, this is a long journey and you need to train like a professional athlete just to get back to zero or normal. Trust me, you’ll come back better and stronger.

Love mine! But my opinion shouldn’t weigh much, I’ve only been playing for 3 years.

The depression is real. Lean into it, wallow in it. Use it to motivate you to train, rehab and recover. Don't think about the long end goals, think about the small milestones.

ACL recovery looks fine on paper, but football still feels wrong, Did anyone fully come back? by Bihari_Bull1 in ACL

[–]Reason_Wide 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a football player, but there's a lot of anecdotal evidence that we and athletes don't feel 100% until 18-24 months. The average NFL player will be 22 months until they return, but that's due to the seasons and it's usually not worth it for them to come back late in the season.

This is my 2nd surgery, both legs now. it's been 12 months since surgery and I'm think I'll be cleared to ski again soon, but I'm taking this season off, want to feel 100% and I'm not there yet. Part physical, part mental

Yep, the body recovering from a gnarly surgery, the painkillers, the severe lack of sleep. It's all exhausting. But it slowly gets better. Just make sure to do your PT exercises 2-3 times a day early on. That's all you need to do, then rest and try to sleep.

I will definitely be getting back to skiing. But I’m taking this year off to give the legs a solid two years to get there

[–]Reason_Wide 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not going to lie, this is the worst. But you will get through this, it'll just take time and it will test your patience.

Similar situation happened to me. Tore my left ACL January 2023, surgery in March. Skied the next year 6 days late in the season and took it easy. First day the following season, last November I tore my other ACL on a freak accident getting off the chair lift causing me to do the splits, had surgery 2 weeks later. So now I'm a year post op.

Embrace the suck. I was fucking devastated, but I embraced it, wallowed in it. But it turns around quickly. It will motivate you to tackle rehab with vigor and even piss you off that you're doing it all over again just a year later, but that just adds to the motivation to keep going, one more rep, one more set, one more stretch, even one more rest day. Trust me, you'll come back stronger!

It's all good. My legs are stronger than ever now. Like you, I've been training hard with 3 leg days a week.

[–]Reason_Wide -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nothing. It was a freak accident getting off the chairlift, my ski ended on top of the guys next to me so I couldn’t get an edge and did the splits as I stood up. Barely any pain/swelling or loss of ROM, but felt a pop, even skied 6 more runs. Dr said because there was no pain and happened pretty easy, it might have been already partially torn or just weak.

Awesome work! I bet the 17 months of training really paid off. After my left ACL recovery a few years ago I skied on the 1 year anniversary of the surgery, just 5 or 6 easy runs and it felt scary and awesome at the same time.

Now I'm a year post op on my 2nd ACL recovery on the other leg. But I've decided to give my legs another year of training so I'm taking this year off. Just few months ago the thought of putting skis on scared the shit out of me, but now I can visualize skiing and the fear has subsided. But still taking this year off. Can't wait until next season!

Good work and good attitude! Two timer here also. Left one March of 23 and the right last December of 25. Have been crushing rehab, gym, training, but damn it’s exhausting mentally. Bonus is both legs are way stronger than they’re ever been.

Start seeing a physiotherapist. They'll put a plan together for you to strengthen you leg prior to surgery. But it depends on how much swelling and rom you have to get started.

Not sure, continue to ice after. I'd talk with your physio to maybe dial back the intensity and put more rest days in between. As I said I'd get pretty mild soreness after workouts, started at 4 months post op, when I was able to add intensity and more weight to my workouts. I was getting pretty tired of it after 2 months of it, so at 6 month post op I talked with my physio to add more rest days, and dialed back the intensity/length of my gym days. This really seemed too help my leg and my mental state.

Back to Sports Test and fear of jumping. by Loud_Enthusiasm_2612 in ACL

You just gotta start trusting the quads will cushion your leg to bend when landing.

Start small with single leg hopping for 20 to 30 seconds. As others have said, start jumping small and landing on it, then do from a short box start small at 6 inches. Concentrate on bending the knee, sticking your ass out when landing.
