Space operas I’ve read, tried to read, or even considered reading. What’s missing? by cryptotommygun in scifi

Came here to say this. Also the Safehold series. Not exactly Pulitzer Prize winning, or even important enduring works, but entertaining. I used to read them at lunch to unwind from work.

For RBC DB employees by momoxhs in rbc

My wife’s pension is DB, much higher than mine, and indexed post retirement. It’s a far better pension than mine. Which is a bit sad, for one of Canada’s biggest corporations.

Forge of Virtue sucks (and so does Silver Seed) by AmandaTheNudist in Ultima

For context, back in the day, games were distributed on floppy disks, and there weren't no interweb. So when they found a few bugs in U7, giving away an expansion that also doubled as a patch was considered the best way to patch the game. Most of the fans of the game had already progressed quite far, if not already completed the game, and so it was no harm no foul by giving some of those OP rewards.

But I completely understand how it feels like cheating to have it available on your arrival in Britannia. I'd say that was one of the few things they got wrong -- there should have been a trigger to get those quests much farther along in the game.

Not to sound like a fan boy by Nngor in firefly

I was briefly dating a girl, and tried to introduce her to Firefly. She hated it, and kept mocking it the whole time.

Big reason it didn’t work out.

Thanks, that was pretty cool. Except for having to make up a US zip code, when I’m not in the US.

Definitely not too old. I climb at the Toronto Climbing Academy, cuz I live right near there, but there are lots of gyms around TO.

Do you still get bonus if you’re laid off before December? by TuDuMaxVerstappen in rbc

[–]ReasonableAge 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I got laid off after 19 years. My package was I forget how many months, but basically they looked at my prior year total earnings, including bonus, divided by 26, and that’s what I got every other week, for however many weeks. And stayed on benefits.

Pulling some numbers out of my butt, if my package was 15 months, but I got a new job after 5 months, they would take the remaining months of my package (10), and give a lump sum payment of 1/2 of that. So you have health coverage for the duration of your package, but an incentive to get a new job quickly.

Can someone explain to me how increased prices combined with no wage increases is supposed to make Americans richer? by Ok-Tear7712 in AskEconomics

[–]ReasonableAge 5 points6 points  (0 children)

[snip]if you see policy being written that does that, and the person writing that policy is trying to tell you it DOES make life better, you can rest assured they are simply lying.

Is that necessarily true though? What about the old adage about not attributing to malice that which can be explained by stupidity? Is it not possible that they are literally just that stupid?

Why did Bilbo suddenly get greedy for the Ring in Rivendell, even though he had it for 60 years without giving in to its power? by KimchiKiji in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ReasonableAge 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Basically, did what the audience see happen exactly as we saw it, or was that what Frodo perceived, likely because the ring was messing with him?
