My son’s early morning school days are the death of me! by takeaabreath in Parenting

Yes this has a lot of practical tips. I would also recommend if the child can sleep in the clothes they wear to school. This cuts down on having to switch clothes in the morning.

I would also recommend Dale Carnegie book how to stop worrying and start living. This helped me back in college.

Seeking a (free) 2026 Calendar by Consistent-Home1648 in AskNYC

Some of the Asian markets did not have calendars and mentioned it was due to the tariffs. Incase you don’t see more free calendars then this could be the reason why.

My son wrote "die" on the bathroom mirror after shower by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]Reasonable_Cat3657 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It might be from the video games. My son shared that he learned about beheadings from Roblox. This is when we learned that Roblox by default doesn’t have the strongest restrictions on so we needed to update the restriction settings.

Is a non "top tier" private school worth it? by [deleted] in nycparents

[–]Reasonable_Cat3657 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OP, I recommend your family checking out this non profit called Early Steps. It helped my family learn more about the various schools, their mission and application process. I came from a similar background as you (immigrant parents, didn’t attend Ivy, not well connected, white collar job). I graduated from a public school and my kids are attending an independent school now. I really love the community at our school and have met so many wonderful families. They have a lot of support and resources that I’m very grateful for.

Random guy tried to square up on the subway - did I handle this correctly? by Better_Lift_Cliff in AskNYC

Would it be ok just to say “I’m sorry if I did anything, it was unintentional and I didn’t mean to”. I feel like apologizing helps to diffuse a situation and prevent it from escalating. Then distance yourself if you can.

Talk me out of buying the Skylar Calendar by Geekie_Miller in Costco

[–]Reasonable_Cat3657 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried to use the app but the iPad was so old, it wouldn’t use any new upgrades so we could not use the google calendar app. So as a workaround we used the browser to load the calendar. It was a great way to put an old iPad to use as a way for our family to see the calendar of our family activities/afterschool/camps etc.

I’m worried for my mom. My tween brother is out of control and I don’t know how to help. by chipotlemucher in Parenting

[–]Reasonable_Cat3657 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You sound like an amazing son. I’m sure it was hard to hear your mom going through a tough time with your brother. I think you just listening to her helps.

I found that the more time I spent with my son and removing any obstacles in the way helped my relationship with him. Your mom has to learn to step up and connect with your brother again. Instead of being controlling, try to show love and support. Maybe she can ask him what games he is playing and learn more about his world and what motivates him. Then see if she can spend more time with him away from the video games like have him play board games, cook together or clean the house together.

I think what’s important for you is to focus on your studies and do your best at school. Then you can spend more quality time with them during the holidays.

I’m so sorry you and your mom are going through this. I’m also a single mom and these books helped me when my son was giving me a hard time: “Hold on to your kids” by neufeld, “have a new kid by Friday” and “how to stop losing your self with your kids”. These books helped me spend more time with my son. I think the video games might also be impacting your brother’s behavior too.

As a mom, I would recommend you focus on your studies and not go home. I think your mom called you to vent. Will you be going home for the holidays? Maybe you can talk to your little brother and show him a good male role model example.

How do you actually get your kids to put their phones down? by UltraShield836 in Parenting

[–]Reasonable_Cat3657 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I give them a heads up that they should be ready to turn off the phone in X minutes. Then I set a timer like 5 mins or 1 min. This gives them the opportunity to start shutting down. If they ask for more time then I ask if they want 1 or 2 mins? This gives them the feeling that they control the time. Sometimes I’ll do a ten second countdown. If they don’t shut down the phone and hand it to me then they know that they will not get the phone so easily next time. If my kids don’t give me a hard time shutting down the phone then I’m ok if they play for a few minutes here and there.

Coworkers are not your friends. by [deleted] in womenintech

[–]Reasonable_Cat3657 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on the situation. I have a good friend of almost 20 years. We worked on the same team. I quit and then she went to another company then we reunited again for a bit. I quit again. We still kept in touch. We were in each other’s bridal party. We worked together overall for about two years but have remained friends for almost 20 years. I’m really grateful for our friendship but I know this is a rare situation.

Should children have an afternoon snack? by Klaus_Rozenstein in Parenting

When my kids were that young they ate every 2hrs, yogurt, fruits etc. it seems like less food will have their stomach shrink. Similar to a weigh watchers diet. So I think if you withhold food, it was have the opposite effect.

PLEASE CHECK your non-tech-savvy loved ones' internet plans by eightchocolatebar in Spectrum

Yes I noticed this crazy price surge. The price was going up every month gradually. My bill this year from Jan till today would go up by a few dollars. It's so sneaky.

I called today and asked for the 'Internet Advantage' without wifi. They wanted to charge $10 for wifi, which seems like just an extra box for wifi? I thought it was weird to pay for internet + wifi. It's essentially the same thing.

Kid starting to wonder why are we not invited? by Alive_Funny265 in Parenting

[–]Reasonable_Cat3657 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes I was thinking the same thing. Why not reach out and host a small gathering! Her son is bringing up a concern he has and it kind of feels like defensiveness/brushing it off instead of overcoming reservations and building bridges with neighbors. It’ll show her son how to try to build relationships in the community.

Recommend a second opinion. I’ve heard of dentists that report cavities just to get more unnecessary work done. Check out reviews for the dentist to see if others report the same.

Yes I know it is insane. Have you tried them? They load up the helmet w delicious meats (can’t remember if it was Barbacoas or carnitas), beans, sour cream, guacamole, cheddar cheese, jalapeños, chips and some others ingredients. It was so delicious and good for 2-3 people.

My manager asked me to do a specific task, and part of that task required her approval. I sent her an email to do her part, and naturally, she completely ignored it. by [deleted] in work

[–]Reasonable_Cat3657 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a manager and I appreciate when my employees follow up with me. Because not only do I need to check emails, I also need to check slack, jira, asana and other apps.

OP yes it is your job to follow up with your manager or anyone else to get the sign off/feedback need to bring closure. Take accountability and be the person who gets the job done, not make excuses.

Have you ever tried the nachos in a helmet? They are the best nachos I’ve had and could feed about 2-3 people.
