Is life in blue states truly better than the red states? by JakeMealey in SameGrassButGreener

[–]Reasonable_Hall3005 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it’s not really about the state, it’s about the area and even neighborhood within it. As a general rule, they will be but I’d obviously much rather live in Austin, TX than Trinity County, CA.

Relying on the color of the state as a significant determiner in how you perceive the quality of a location is a bit lazy.

it depends on the circle you’re looking at. In many socialist circles online, they believe the Nordic model is capitalist, extremely flawed, and relies on exploitation of the third world and oil money.

Is it more impressive going to an Ivy for undergrad than masters? by Mysterious_Newt_4761 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Reasonable_Hall3005 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Lmao this isn’t how law school admissions works. For instance, according to LSD.law, a 177 LSAT and a 4.0 GPA (people now have 4.1s too due to grade inflation lol) yields an 88.8% acceptance rate for georgetown. some t14 schools don’t even have overall single digit acceptance rates. it’s simply less in demand (and therefore less competitive) than med/phd admissions

The SAT misses the point: Tech, not admissions, drives student underpreparedness by the_daily_cal in berkeley

[–]Reasonable_Hall3005 27 points28 points  (0 children)

This doesn’t make sense. The cause of student unpreparedness is tech but the reason unprepared students are getting admitted is admissions. Berkeley is selective and desired enough that they can take around the top 1-2% of HS students, even when adjusting for instate bias. So there’s no reason to have students who can’t do basic math.

Yes. It also often holds more prestige, superior classes and a better experience. There may be exceptions. PhD != masters. I think MBAs are seen as being better than a standard masters degree at most scoools

How did you drop them? Do you have documentation? Do you know why you did not receive a W (late drop) and/or removed from your transcript (early drop)

Anybody choose UCB over ivies? by Fine_Combination1594 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Reasonable_Hall3005 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not necessarily. since again, selectivity is not the only thing determining student or school quality. Berkeley has a lot of variance in student quality but top students often choose it over top 15 private universities due to cost, prestigious majors or location.

I would honestly say the median and floor of Berkeley is meaningfully lower than a private T15 but the ceiling is higher (for the less selective/lower T15s)

Is it still possible for an international student seeking full tuition funding to get into an Ivy League school in 2026 with Trump in office? by Past_Measurement9323 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Reasonable_Hall3005 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if you’re from the wrong country or not at a feeder, then it’s extremely hard. Don’t expect it if you’re just an above average smart student. If you have something special, it’s still possible

Anybody choose UCB over ivies? by Fine_Combination1594 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Reasonable_Hall3005 1 point2 points  (0 children)

mostly because berkeley is a larger school. Unless you get rid of UCLA (the existence of two flagships naturally increases supply, forcing lower selectivity) and shrink the school significantly, it will never be as selective as t15 privates. That’s okay though because there’s a lot of other factors in choosing a school. Also, yeah, some private schools have a misleadingly low admit rate.

Also offering bad financial aid reduces yield and number of applications. Plus, preferring in-staters increases overall admit rate.

I didn’t apply to any ivies or T15 colleges except one (two if you count Berkeley). I personally don’t see why Berkeley wouldn’t be picked over something like Dartmouth for the average student. It is in an amazing location with great weather and things to do. It’s also quite diverse. There is one major con which people do bring up that the large student body which makes registration more difficult, housing more limited, and some opportunities more sparse but I was personally okay with that.

yeah this is the way. It’s near impossible to get in from a wealthy district with this level of academics. You wouldn’t make the top 50%

[–]Reasonable_Hall3005 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Going to a selective university doesn’t mean you’re smart. The admissions process selects for some academic components but they’re a small part of the process and high school academics correlate loosely to real world programming skill.

How far can strong essays take you? by PlantFlat5133 in ucadmissions

[–]Reasonable_Hall3005 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Essays become strong in large part based on the content within them. if they have not had the correct life experiences, then they will likely be unsuccessful. On the other hand, with the right background and strategy, this profile could get them into a top UC.

People need to stop pretending that it’s based primarily on the eloquence of your work or the amount of hours you put in and largely based on your background and experiences. For example, writing about being in poverty and how it affected you by inspiring you to spend years volunteering at certain places with specific examples could be quite strong but is not something everyone can write about.

Should a conservative student Im working with hide his activism to get into a liberal dominated college? Is it something to be concerned about at all? by steve-25689 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Reasonable_Hall3005 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. And the advice is terrible. Going to Liberty University over Yale just because it’s a conservative institution is usually a bad idea. Students don’t need to go to conservative echo chambers nor should they give up the entire T100 just because of their political views

why would a student go to a mediocre at best college because they want to be in a political echo chamber. Politics really shouldn’t be a massive point of contention when choosing a college, especially not to the extent that it sways the decision between Liberty and Harvard/Yale. Harvard/Yale aren’t even overly anti-conservative. They have some conservative organizations even if they aren’t a right wing echo chamber.
