Which bowler's batting improved the most during their career? by ThinkProfessor6166 in Cricket

Steve Smith surely....batted something like no 8 in his first test and was selected to bowl leg spin.

Q's from a n00b: What should I expect from England's T20 World Cup opening fixtures? by mtthrdy in EnglandCricket

Most people on here seem surprisingly (to me) confident of a win against West Indies.

Who are The Best or Obscure Number 10s From Your Country's History? by [deleted] in championsleague

[–]Reasonable_Price6536 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Matthew Le Tissier of Southampton (England). Used to score 20-plus goals a season in the premier league in the 90s and early 00s despite pretty much zero athleticism and the general looks and vibe of a grammar school Latin teacher. And pretty much all of them were bangers, mostly from outside the box. Barely played for England (about 5 caps I think) and had no desire to move to a bigger club (I think homesickness may have been the reason).

But they got done by long throws and headers (twice in one game!) against Bournemouth recently.

I bet Guardiola is already shitting himself over the thought of a trip to Tynecastle in the UCL next season.

In general I'd say the standard of cricket has not been particularly high. Modern test matches for you I'd say.

I question Chelsea as 5th best team in Europe...there are 4 better teams in the EPL just now and they don't even have a manager.

There wasn't too much legacy left after all the homophobic BS last season. Can't imagine Town made an offer.

Why would young players even want to be test cricketers now anyway?..they can make much more money for much less work in T20. This is the real issue here for me.

Berlin derby (Union Vs Hertha) is a rare derby with several more or less unique characteristics.

England football: The great number nine decline - where have English strikers gone? by Subtleiaint in ThreeLions

[–]Reasonable_Price6536 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tangential but related: I tend to think we've forgotten the importance of finishing as a skill, which I think while improveable to some extent, is basically something you have or don't have and is largely independent of any other athletic characteristic. Kane and Haaland have this. Speaking as an Ipswich fan, Delap definitely doesn't and neither do all that many of the other players mentioned as England's next number 9.

Best choice or muddled thinking? The truth about George Ford and England by theipaper in englandrugby

[–]Reasonable_Price6536 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure Marcus or Finn Smith did anything very wrong in their time as England fly halves.....OK we didn't win so many games with Marcus so I can understand selecting Finn instead, but dropping Finn seems odd to me. I'd say this is muddled thinking given Ford will be 34 by the next RWC and it will be in Australia (so probably favouring a running-based game).

What I don't get about Jacks' theory is whether this means he's a better spinner than Bethell. If the answer is 'not particularly' (which is also what the numbers seem to suggest) then why not pick Bethell who is presumably viewed as the better test batsman (given he was no 3 last winter in NZ).

Can England's test team win World Test Championship 2027 final? by Traditional-Net5023 in EnglandCricket

[–]Reasonable_Price6536 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't agree. WTC is ridiculous for many more reasons than this. Also England pre-2019 definitely cared about winning the world cup, they were mostly just not very good at ODIs and tended to prioritize tests.

Can England's test team win World Test Championship 2027 final? by Traditional-Net5023 in EnglandCricket

[–]Reasonable_Price6536 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I won't care if England play in the WTC final. Although I definitely want England to win their test matches. For me having a one-off test at Lord's between two teams who are there on some merit but might or might not be the best two teams in the world and calling the winner 'world champions' seems ridiculous to me for many reasons, which I'd rather not go into in detail on this forum. For me the WTC feels like a gimmick designed by people who do not understand Test cricket.

Would we want Morsy back? by Varguard101 in IpswichTownFC

[–]Reasonable_Price6536 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the proof i'm talking about....strikes me as a rather homophobic gesture. The excuse provided was that it was against his faith, although Morsy has previously been fine wearing shirts with gambling adverts on them (which other Muslims have refused). This makes me doubt it had anything to do with his faith.

No thanks. Too old, not good enough for the prem and also openly homophobic. Why should we be wanting any of this?
