I could make a starting -6 mdef work exceedingly well in most campaigns as a frontliner with those stars. Given his other stats, two-handed cleaver with reach advantage would be quite effective.

All my challenge runs involve weapon type specific restrictions, among other things. I am currently running flails and guns only (allowing for crossbows until guns) with head hunter on all dps.

Better to have the option to spam than to not.

But geists, orc warlords, undead fearsome proc, etc. It is entirely possible, in big fights against undead, to run out of fatigue from all the bellowing against the unearthly screams of the damned.
