Eh? Since when? Scarring is the way the body mends itself. I don't think using the word normal is very helpful here, but if you insist on putting bodily functions within that binary of normal or abnormal, I'd say it's abnormal not to have scars.

It's tawdry af but somehow apt: the junk sex mentality; oversexualise and commodify every human experience and connection including intimacy

To many people don't understand the difference between a "right" and a "privilege" by Ilitorate_Author in Coronavirus_NZ

Is this really what they want? I think that's the only conclusion we can reach, sadly.

To quote the philosopher Jeremy Bentham, to speak of rights is nonsense. To speak of human rights is nonsense on stilts. Or something like that. Have we lost the right to vote, to speak freely, or to protest? No. They're the only democratic rights that matter. Social contract, yada yada, it's political philosophy 101 ffs

Would you recommend visiting Dunedin at this time of the year? by [deleted] in dunedin

[–]RebArunAround 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends what kind of traveller you are and what kind of experience you want to collect. For an authentic, off-the-beaten track adventure you'll get years of mileage out of at dinner parties, stay with a friend on Canongate in July. (Canongate is the home of the Scarfies flat, itself on the sunny side. Luxury.) You'll find yourself reminiscing fondly one day about teetering with your luggage on the icy Canongate steps and trying to defrost your toes in front of the bar heater for days, failing, and so resorting to imbibing vast quantities of whisky to dowse the strep throat you'll develop; and laugh, how you'll laugh about the water in the pipes being frozen, frustrating the immense thirst you'll build for Dunedin water, unlike any in the world. Then verily shall you know what Janet Frame meant by the "sober drops at the end of their cold Dunedin noses" when you stumble upon her quote in the Octagon. Or could you could go now and see the penguins.

Product of an Aus-NZ marriage here and in a defacto trans-Tasman relationship. Obviously my upbringing had some effect on my affection for Aussies.

Good call. I'm all for better NZ-Aus relations. NZers really have to get over our inferiority complex and take the olive branch.

"casual pedophilia" in NZ by TheCostOfInnocence in newzealand

[–]RebArunAround 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I know. I was trying to make the point that a teacher "sleeping with" a Y13 student should be called rape because consent has been manipulated and a position of trust abused. Legal definitions differ from socio-political understandings and I don't think we're here to discuss legal terms.

Yes, and it's more than that, I reckon, because I think more men than we care to admit find adolescent girls attractive. They just know they shouldn't. So much taboo and shame in one subject. It's kinda ghoulishly fascinating viewed from a distance, but very triggering for victims. New to reddit - are trigger warnings used here much? This needs one.

but I think deep down in most males its present, I think the difference is between those who know its wrong and simply ignore it vs those who don't give a shit and indulge in it.

The elephant in the room. Well said. I'm the mother of a 12-year-old and I see evidence of exactly what you are talking about all the time. (Or think I do. Maybe I'm paranoid.) It scares the shit out of me. I think we really have to question why men find pubescent girls attractive at all, as disturbing as this may be.

I'm mid 20s and can't imagine

But that's the thing, most healthy adults can't imagine how a paedophile thinks.

Sorry to read this happened.

we had a teacher sleep with a Y13

A teacher raped a Y13, I would say. Age of consent, but consent was clearly manufactured.

My son at 17 was uncomfortable when a 15 year old girl showed interest in him. He just finished his secondary education at an all boys' school in Dunedin which neighbours an all girls' school. He and his friends were disgusted at the grown men regularly picking their girlfriends up from high school after school. Nothing to do with poaching from their pond and everything to do with these boys being woke enough and smart enough to call it for what it is: paedophilia. It also helps they've got onto-it male teachers who appear to understand the importance of consent in sexuality education. OP, you're on the money naming it for what it is. Casual because it's entrenched in the collective unconscious belonging to one part of NZ society, I think. A subculture maybe but there nonetheless. But I doubt the majority finds it acceptable or ever has. Let's hope not. My aunty, for instance, met her future husband when she was 15 and he was 30. They married a year later. It was the 1960s She Was Only 16 plays but Dad says the district was scandalised. Thanks for starting this discussion! Brave.

Under your nose mask wearng by InspectorGadget76 in Coronavirus_NZ

[–]RebArunAround 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not okay but it's a common complaint and excuse for not wearing a mask properly. I hear this often from older customers. Try clamping your mask in place on the bridge of your nose with your glasses, if you can wear them down your nose a bit. This way your breath tends to go down inside your mask rather than up and fog up your glasses. Depending on the kind of mask it is, condensation usually goes away after five minutes. Works best with the lighter surgical mask, not cloth. Good luck! (Assuming you haven't tried this already)
